I did the same thing. Not knowing window terminology made finding the fix difficult but once I found "shoe lock" and this video I was able easily able to get the sash moving again. Whew!
Hi Norm! Blessings to you for posting this simple-to-follow video! I was cleaning my windows and was so worried I would not be able to get a particular one closed without the help of a repair person. Just as you said...and wowza!...the tension on my windows is mad tight! Many thanks! 😊
Knew something was askew. Searched for info. You educated me and possible saved a sash from being damaged. Thank You for your time in creating this tutorial !
Thank you! What helped is that you explained to turn each balance TOWARDS the inside and you zoomed in for a good visual. Thank you! Seriously, I viewed other videos and yours was the only one which helped! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I tried for 2 hours by myself and couldn’t figure out what to do, watched this video and followed your instructions and did it in 5 minutes. You the man!!
Norm...you are DA MAN!!! I'm a woman and feel like a real hero. Was a little nervous with the tension, but I didn't panic. Thank you for being so precise and making it easy to follow.
Thank you! My son took apart a window. So, naturally, I had to put it back together. I needed to know how to get the pins back into the shoe. You showed me how to do that before I boiled over!
Oh my goodness this video was a lifesaver, thank you!! I had been watching other videos, from very reputable sources, and basically the only solution offered was that my balances needed to be replaced. All the other videos were on how to replace balances. I have older Peachtree vinyl tilt sash windows and the balances are inserted sideways not where they are easily accessible and I had no idea how I was going to accomplish that, then I stumbed across your video, thankfully, and completely different type of "shoe" at the bottom of the balances and no slot for a screw driver to fit into them, and they were lopsided, one about 3" higher up the jam than the other, but.. because of your video I decided to try putting the metal tab at the base of the window into the one that was higher up the jam (strings were still intact on the balance and tight), once it was mounted I pushed down on that side moving the shoe down until it was flush with the shoe on the left, mounted the pin on the window into that one as well, pushed both down to the bottom of the window, then WHALLAH!!! The window slid open and stayed, that was it!!!! Just as you said, someone had removed the sash and not reinstalled it correctly and it was not even attached to the balances at all! YOU ROCK! Saved me $350 allowance that I was going to have to give my home buyers, thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Norm, I have the same window balance as yours in the video. It would be good to add the procedure to re-attach the nylon rope mechanism to the shoe. I found that when you take a window out for spring cleaning, these ropes can come off the shoe. I vacuumed out the bugs and dirt out of my window in the garage and fished the rope back in. I added some silicone to the window felts and channels. Works like new now! I almost gave up and ordered a new balance mechanism. Thanks for your video. Very helpful and keeps people from damaging their windows or hurting themselves in the process.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!!! You helped my husband and I put our window back together again when NOBODY else we knew how to do it.
OMG...bless you. I spent a 1/2 hour in scorching heat trying to fix my window until I found you. Your up-close pics were a Godsend. Bless you. Can you come live with me please? Lol. I lost my husband in 2015 and he was a contractor! He taught me alot but not this. Again...thank you so much!!
Saved me in a pinch! Needed an answer quick and you came through. Hate all those other videos that make you fast forward 15 minutes to get to the point!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! Painting my NEW windows and this happened to me today!!! Thought my husband was gonna kill me!! Ha ha. Thank goodness I found your video! We fixed it ourselves! Amen! With your help! Again much appreciated!! 😉
I have been trying to figure out what I had done to the window since I cleaned it back in the fall. Thank you, I would forget m, go to raise it and hit my hand. So glad you dud this video.🙏
Like everyone else said, ya saved me! I was hoping it was a simple, little technique to "unlock the shoe," thank you so much for sharing it with us! : )
You saved me!!! Thank you so much for the thorough explanation and detailed shots of what you were doing! I was able to fix 2 Windows that have been off track for nearly 2 years
Tried to get a window up (fall!), and like usual, I couldn’t. Normally, I’d call the window people and pay them $100 just to show up, but I watched YOUR video, and this 60 year old grandma did it herself!!!!! I cannot thank you enough!
Awesome - thanks so much. Usually my home projects are supposed to take a few minutes and it devolves into hours of crap. I fixed my window in less time than it took to watch the video!
Great video! I did it! Thank you for the close ups so I knew exactly what I was doing. I was afraid of breaking something but your video gave me the confidence I needed. Thanks!
Thank you for telling us “don’t panic” because I am a little nervous since it’s the TOP sash that stuck this time even though I always open it about 7 inches or the length of my hand from middle finger to wrist line.
My shoe is a different design without the open shoe facing upward as the one you've shown here and I'm having trouble putting the sash back. I tried few times setting the shoes at a slightly angle so my sash will go into place but with difficulty...so I'm only set my sash in one shoe for now. Any suggestion? Thanks. Great video for close up on the shoes areas.
Thank you very much my friend and I just fixed her kitchen window. It was a snap. Do really do have to hang on to the screw driver. Thank you again. The Woodfungardens Gurls.
I have a problem with the UPPER pane sagging to where I must reach under and behind the lower pane and push it up, and then locking it scrapes the latch. The upper pane seems to have become dislodged. I see a little piece of felt from something on one side that seems to have come loose and slides, probably from my fighting to get the upper panes to stay up and latch it. The lower pane is hard to lift now, too. Could you please address this problem? I'm finding a lot of videos on lower pane issues, but not upper panes. I know something is going on with the upper pane because the 'safety' that you slide for cleaning was out of place. I fought to get push the safety so that I could lock it. How important is that piece of felt? It is an Andersen window.
We are missing the little metal piece that is attached to the the string on one side. Can we replace that metal piece, or do we have to replace the whole spring system?
@Norm Courchaine, thank you very much sir for the simple and great instructions. We have similar windows and on couple of them the balance pulley is broken. I am not able to find the name of the manufacturer on any of the windows and likely they are custom windows. The only marking on the balance is 28c bsi and I believe it is the block and tackle kind. I would sincerely appreciate if you can let us know of a supplier for the part. Best regards.
Great video. I release the window, tilt it 90 degrees to the cleaning position, but then the window won't come out. It won't even budge. I can't remove the window. Any suggestions? Thanks.
American craftsmen 50 series.wnen almost closed a lot of tention .need 2 hands to close.but then window bows down in center on lower half when locked.in video you adjust inward .tried both way no Chang New windows ?
I unscrewed the piece that hooks to the tension wire of the shoe. I thought it was broken. Now I can't get the piece to sit flat. Its a rental. HELP! lol
My Window doesn't have the ulock its more like a peghole , i turn it it loosen up , i raise it up then turn it again to make tight, put the window back on but the peghole turns with the window and it becomes loose againg, , i dont know if i should hammer it in
This video fully addressed our issue with one window and thanks to you it was a very simple remedy. Much appreciated!
I did the same thing. Not knowing window terminology made finding the fix difficult but once I found "shoe lock" and this video I was able easily able to get the sash moving again. Whew!

My sentiments exactly, after having watched other videos that did no closeups and kind of rushed through the process.
Same here. 2 other videos then this one!!!
I tried for 2 hours by myself and couldn’t figure out what to do, watched this video and followed your instructions and did it in 5 minutes. You the man!!

Thanks for spelling it out so neatly and carefully with closeups of how the shoe works. That makes all the difference.

@@al00bukhara thank you. He's in a better place.
Ahhhh!!!! A horseshoe!
I was Googling “storm window holder upper”
Can just the round “horseshoe” cam be replaced when it’s broken or does the entire balance shoe have to be replaced?
Messed up on some of the words, don’t like to text, fingers always hitting the wrong keys. Lol
My stash won’t go back into the horseshoe. Any help! Only one side will
This helped so much!!!
This was perfect thank you!
Quick and easy fix -- thanks!
Great video. I release the window, tilt it 90 degrees to the cleaning position, but then the window won't come out. It won't even budge. I can't remove the window. Any suggestions? Thanks.
I see your shoe has a space to get the pin in. My window shoe is all round so I'm having a hard time putting the pins back in.
By the way your instruction and video are awesome! I feel like I'm with my Dad. Awwwe. :-)
Thank you so much. I was doing just the opposite way I should have been.
