The border trick works with any type of mask, even freehand. By manipulating one mask or the other's exansion property, you can have the border go in, out, or some of both!
Well... I hadn't paid attention to the mask colors, or the SHIFT/ALT/CTRL modifiers, so I learned new things about Hitfilm today! That said, an easier way to make a perfect circle mask is to make a 1:1 aspect ratio plane to begin with. Remember a plane/layer in Hitfilm takes up memory and resources. Making a 1920x1080 plane then horizontally scaling it to create that perfect circle uses almost twice the resources of a 1080x1080 plane with a non-scaled perfect circle.
@@HitfilmSensei Another excellent tutorial. I take it you're going to play with mattes for next week? Here's an idea! We both did particle dissolves. Basically mine took forever to set up mattes (Modified in development based on one of your tuts), but had the advantage of being procedural, you did masks, which is a heckuva lot easier and faster to set up. Good, existing parallel project to discuss the differences, and when to use one or the other.
Cud u do a tutorial on how to use freehand tool to draw or trace any object like an icon, using these masking tools? This tutorial was super useful, thank u :)

I have a question for you. I'm trying to use multiple masks on a single plane, over the video. But when I add a second mask, it changes the setup from the previous one and makes the entire thing disappear. Is there a way to use multiple masks on a single plane? The plane (just a solid color) is hiding the rest of the video, letting only the masked portion show. I would like to do this in different areas of the video. Any help is appreciated.
I've been trying to figure this one thing out for days... I'm trying to make a circular mask from the centre of the screen... double clicking the mask icon doesn't work and holding Shift/Alt also doesn't work. Any idea how to make a mask from the centre of the screen? I'm using HitFilm Express 12
Depending on how the hair is in the shot, that can be an extremely difficult thing to rotoscope out. You would need to keyframe the Path of the Mask and go frame by frame to rotoscope.

Here I am still using Hit Film 2017 Pro when Hit Film Express seems more advanced in every regard :-)
FXhome has made a lot of improvements since Version 5. Having said that, however, HitFilm Pro 2017 was a great product!

Make sure that all the masks are set to "add."

Unfortunately, those features are not available in Version 12. They were added in Version 14.1

Duplicate the layer, add a mask to the upper one, and then alter the color of the masked layer as you like.
