Always keep a damp cloth with you whenever you paint so you can clean any spatter or mistakes right away before it dries.

omg thank you!!!! we just moved into our house last month and have brand new very thick fluffy carpet, and the whole house has a dark wood trim, which is fine, except for in my office it looks terrible with my pastel decor. So I've been wanting to paint the trim white and I wasn't sure how to do it around this carpet. Thanks so so much for this video, you've absolutely helped me so much!! ❤️

Most x-ray departments these days use digital detectors and very few use film anymore, but discarded x-ray film from perhaps a vet that still uses film is an excellent device to slip under baseboards. Any piece of firm, thin plastic should also work if you can find it.

Since my baseboards go all the way to the subfloor, I can't slip anything under it (the tack strips are in the way). Slipping something underneath does work on some though.

that was a tip I will try out for carpet, however in order to get a nice crisp paint lint between the wall paint and trim you might want to check out how the Idaho painter creates the perfect crisp line with caulk and tape most People would never be able to cut in with a brush only I still enjoyed your video thank you

Wow! Tape the carpet? Your sure like to work.
My house was built in 1954. It was built with hardwood floors and the baseboards were installed to the floor. Over the decades previous owner ruined the floors so we went with carpet. This means our carpet butts up to the baseboards.
First I scrub the walls, ceiling and trim. Then I paint the walls, if I get a bit of wall paint, on the top edge, no problem.
Once the wall paint has hardened for at least 48 hrs. I now apply tape on the wall along the top edge of the base board.
Now, the easy part. Rather than apply tape, to the carpet, I devised an easier way. I went to the local home 8mprovement store and bought 6 blank thin plastic signs. They're each about 12" x 24" and cost about 2 bucks each. Now, using a 4" wide thin putty knife. Starting at one end of the wall, I tuck the long side of the plastic sign between the carpet and the baseboard. The next one overlaps the first, working to the other end of the wall. Here's the magic. The thin plastic sign will easily bend away from the baseboard and move the carpet nap away also. Now you can paint the entire height of the baseboard without getting paint on the carpet. Just take care on how you brush when you get to the overlap area. You don't want to scrape paint into the overlap. Go the opposite direction. In a few minutes I Now have painted 12 foot of baseboard with no slop. Once your paint has dried a bit you can move the plastic to the next area. Always remember, though, the side with the paint goes towards the baseboard.
I love that the thin plastic keeps the carpet away from the paint, just by it laying over.
Now, if your baseboards were installed with a large gap between it and the floor, these plastic sheets will still work fast, easy, and clean.
I'm not a painter, just a 72 year old retiree, who does as much as he can.

Peel tape before a paint is dry.

Generally that's a good idea, but I found that with the carpet, then the paint would get in it.

After doing all of that work you still have baseboard that is incorrectly installed.
Bite the bullet! Remove the baseboard using your 6" drywall knife (you call it a putty knife) and a hammer or small pry bar, even channel lock pliers will help you pull small nails/staples.
The baseboard will probably crack and split. Upgrade to a larger more decorative size base. Primer and paint the new material before installation. Place a 1/2" piece of wood (try window parting bead) on the floor and use it as a spacer to hold your new baseboard up off of the subfloor. Install the new material on top or the spacer. Fill the holes caulk the edges sparingly, if necessary and brush on a final coat of paint. Now you have something you can be proud of!

You're right that would be even better, but it would also add more work and expense to our already overwhelming whole-house remodel. 😁 We have changed the baseboards in a couple of rooms when we replaced the flooring. We may do it in these carpeted rooms someday when we replace the carpet. Thanks for the thoughts!
