another great video! If the chain is slipping, check for wear on the links or on the windlass. also make sure the drum is matched for that size link. Keep up the awesome videos, can not wait until you splash again!
This happened to me. Chain and drum sizes didn't match and the result was the same as in Sam's video.

LOL the "Oh, NO!" when the winch coverplate came undone 🤣 I have been there, my friend. I haven't been a fan of DAP products, but i will concede that use of materials like that benefit from understanding their designed uses, parameters, etc. Temperature, humidity, surface prep, etc.

Digital cameras are a game changer. I had to do some work on my car back in the late 90s. It involved removing everything from the top of the engine. Cable assemblies, linkages, brackets, fuel rails, etc. I had a new digital camera that I used to take dozens of pictures as I removed things. When it came time to put it back together I took my laptop out to my shed and looked at the pictures as I hooked it all back up. The smoothest job ever. I didn't have to figure anything at all out. I had NO PARTS LEFT OVER!!!!
You need to get the correct size gypsy for your chain.
My daughter who lives aboard six months of the year swears by her hammock. Best thing is that she can string it from shrouds and sleep outside when its too hot below.

The pipe birth should be a great addition to the boat. Great for taking a cat nap while underway at sea. My guess is the chain is the wrong size for the wildcat on the windless.

The reason you sail the world and I am sitting in my living room is partly my age, but the real reason is that you are so learned. You can fix anything and you have a wonderful shop. I just have too many strikes against me. So to you, full steam ahead.

Great job Sam, just a word to the wise, the key stock should be softer than the parent material (brass not stainless) that way any wear that occurs will be in the key (easy and cheap to replace) and not the shafting, cheers 👍🍺⛵
I think the chain is not confined enough to utilize the most of the gypsy's circumference. Right now it's just using 1/4 of it. Try to guide it so it enters the locker a tiny bit more forward and try to guide the chain so it comes in lower from the front and can't swing up as much.
Also make sure it can hang down freely into the locker as much as possible. The weight of the free hanging chain pulls it into the teeth of the gypsy.
I think you nailed it. Im pretty sure im out of spec for all the manufacturers recommendation for those parameters. Unfortunately its going to take come creative solutions to meet them on my boat. I was thinking of fabricating a roller that pulls the chain down infront of the gypsy

Great to see the windless up and running, looks like it weighs more that the anchor! Seeing you doing chin ups with no osteomy bag showing makes me happy that your surgery went well. The excitement is building for me about your voyage. You must be as well, but plenty of work ahead to keep you focused.

Fyi Sam, keystock is usually sold just oversize or undersize by a few thousands of an inch. Easier to manufacture when you have a plus tolerance. Also it's oversize because keyways tend to wear overtime and the slightly oversize keystock then gives a tight fit. Taking it to the grinder is pretty normal in my experience. I'm no machinist, but I think undersize keystock is so you can plate it and still fit.

Nice mods, Pipe berths traditionally have a second set of holders outboard to fold it out of the way for more room and access to the storage just below it.

That phifertex is great stuff. Used it for line bags and for the bottom of a padded cloth case for an ice fishing auger.
I would have chosen thick plywood for the support blocks for the pipes, they are strong in all directions.
Great job Sam, I got a Sailrite machine recently and am working on cockpit cushions. My only thought on the windlass install was making sure the wires where they go through the metal case don't chafe. It would suck to have that many amps arcing on that wood platform

I'd have added some red electrical tape to the end of the hot wire at the windless for the next time you take it apart, for me it's a comfortable feeling to look at the wires and know which is the hot. I bought a roll of red that I keep around just for that..

Here's what I thought you were gonna do: weld the end of the poles to a wide plate (on each end), then on the opposite side weld a stub in the center and then mount it so that it pivots/swings like a hammock. That's what they did in the olden days on wooden ships.

DC motors like this can run in either direction by switching polarity.

Idea for the Pipe Birth. Rather than those U shaped slots, mount two boards or better yet, pieces of angle iron, vertically as slots for the pipe to travel in. Then drill holes through the boards / angle iron horizontally and put a bolt through the holes. Drill a hole through the end of the pipes as well. That way the bolt goes through one vertical support, through the pipe and through the other vertical support. You can drill holes every 2 inches and have a pipe berth that adjusts easily to any angle.

Hey Sam, luv your vids, pls make sure the key you made is a snug fit, cause if there a little play on the pulley and key it’s gonna ware out quickly, and bugger the shaft and pulley keyway. God bless bro!
On the chain slipping and everything is aligned correctly make chain guard that angles down and under the chain so more of the chain is wrapped under the windless and more notches are in contact with the chain.
The added advantage of a bigger system is you can get unstuck when you go aground. You rock dude. Always looking forward to your next project. ;)
With this setup, next time i need to haul out ill just kedge myself up onto the beach with my windlass lol.

Sam re that pipe berth, the way I’ve seen them was they were attached to the overhead with two miniature block and tackle arrangements... that way you could adjust the height of the pipe berth so you are always level,
And you can use the pulleys to wedge yourself in real tight, so you can’t possibly fall out....

Don't forget to take your anchor off the bow before heading offshore! Keeping the weight our of the ends is tough challenge in Alberg designs, but it will sure increase comfort at sea.

Did my first big boy docking and undocking today, it was a shitshow but the boat is parked. Not in the correct spot or anything, but close enough this early in the season hopefully.
I landed the job at a boat yard to i haul out and storage for free right on time for much needed bottom job on a budget lol and im diff making pipe berth now

With those wire end terminals you can clamp them in a vice heat them up with a torch and fill them full of Sauter. Then put the wire in with the molten sauter and it should hold just as well as a crimp.

I thought you had a decent metal chop saw - the screechy sound reaction was priceless tho....I always silver solder heavy gauge wire connectors - not a big fan of crimping anything in a marine environment....got a big laugh when the plate came loose - the kind you get when you've been there before more times than you wanna admit.....love your reaction, tho - typical Sam....
I used to work on my boat nonstop and hated when my job interfered lol.
5:00 When I wired up a second battery, rather than hard crimping the terminals I just grabbed a torch and filled the buggers up with solder. So far, so good.
GE silicon I is the original formulation and the good stuff that hardens quickly. It is the one that smells a little like acetic acid. It also will sometimes harden in the tube. But the crappy stuff is GE silicon II ... it smells fairly nice but sometimes won't cure. Most of the silicon rubber adhesives and sealants from the auto stores is the "good stuff".
When I replayed your video, it kind of looked like you were using Dap Dynaflex 230. I think that it is basically a latex caulk. It needs exposure to air to dry. You'd be better off with a good silicon adhesive/sealant.
You and my buddy who sells fish in the pike place market are the only ones i have seen wear rubber boots on a sunny day
Some of us wear them year round. I own three pair and one has a permanent set of ice cleats for Winter. Best shoes for all kinds of work outside on my 12cacre forest, except NOT on burning slash days.

Series wound dc motors can do that thing where they turn the same way either polarity.
Might have been good to service the gearbox oil if it had plugs but oh well.

It only motors up. There is a clutch for dropping the anchor

The Muir is designed with a `Reversing Solenoid` in mind (to swap the polarity of the pos and neg). I assumed that was what you had in your vid, but sounds like no - just for the remote maybe?

Is the chain slipping on the windlass because it takes a larger chain? Also curious why you didn't hit it with some fresh paint. I'm not a perfectionist but I tend to freshen up anything I take apart or access. Like when I remove each of my tanks for cleaning (latest project), I clean the hull and hit it with white anti-mold paint before I replace the tank. Helps with the old boat smell too!
It don't matter what you do about putting in adjustment holds for your bunk , you better put in a Lee cloth so you cant roll out

Would it be worthwhile to use your fancy Sailrite sewing machine and make a cover for your windlass?
Of course it turns the same way no matter how you hook it up it's probably a high-speed and low-speed you don't need it to go down and gravity feeds to go out and then you just turn it on and it picks up the chain
You'll be able to drag your boat onto an island and a mile inshore.!
did you add sealant to the cables going into the windlass?
A lot of one part silicones use moisture in the air for a catalyst. If it uses up all the moisture inside your box that's probably why it didn't cure.
It rained that night so it seemed like there would have been plenty of moisture
