- www.thesimpit.com/ presents our new series of video that will take the time to analyse our racing efforts to see what we can learn or do to improve our results.
We recently released a video that shows race #2 from Okayama. If you would like to see that video it can be seen here: • Race Week #2 - iRacing...
In that race I was about 1.2 seconds per lap off the pace of the fastest guy in the top split. If trying to be competitive in racing we will have to find out why. So I analyze both of our laps side by side and find the differences.

I'm on TV!!! Great video :D
Nice lap Adri, you make it look easy to be quick.
Dude what is your sim setup , if you dont mind me asking?
Ovais Saand Thrustmaster T300rs, G27 pedals, T3PA shifter ;)
Adri Pérez wow nothing too fancy and able to be so quick! thanks
It's all about knowing the track and the lines, good gear is not going to make you superfast, only practice!
you may not be the fastest simracer, but you're the best producing videos for the simracing community. Thanks Shawn 👍
That about says it all. I have always been a fan.

Agreed. Awesome video bro! It clearly demonstrated the problem with early turn-in in a way I'd never seen before, very enlightening! Thanks and keep it up.
Agreed, best tutorial style on RUclips in my opinion
i agree, he deserves more subs
Great video! I find myself commonly "Cheating" into the corners like you mentioned. It's definitely a tough habit to kick
Sim Racing Paddock I do it, I know it's wrong, lap after lap, but I just can't stop doing it
be mindful of turn in point. its as important as a brake marker point.
Absolutely loved this video, this is the kind of stuff I hoped The Simpit would cover - can be applied to all the sim racers out there. Incredibly well put together and informative - I am now off to try and apply the lessons :)
That's exactly what I'm about to do after watching this, only I'm going to bring it up on my phone when I start.
How did it go?
Please keep making videos like this Shawn. I really find them very insightful and helpful in figuring out where I'm losing time and how to be better.
Please please please more videos like this, very difficult to find relatable and similarly skilled drivers that I can learn from, I've been wondering where I'm losing time as compared to the top drivers and this video has put me in a much better direction, and given me some insight as to what I should be looking for. Thank you!
This is a great analysis of how the small details add up to big differences. Thanks for making this. It was incredibly helpful!
Sean, this is one of my favorite vids I've ever seen when it comes to sim racing. It blows my mind how such little things, added up, make a big difference and I never noticed all the "little things" until you posted this vid. Thanks so much, I learned a lot. Keep it up.
Brilliantly produced video, must've taken some time.
Wonderful Shaun, thank you. You’re making me a better racer! I used your plans to make my own death mobile rig, and now this!
Great video! You should do this every week. It will tremendously help many of us. Also doing a tutorial video this style help us understand better when it's being compared.
Very interesting video. I like what you're doing. Interesting thought for you: you do correctly focus on corner entry positioning (distance from the edge of the track, self-preservation instinct, etc.), but I didn't catch any discussion on corner exit positioning (edit: I see you mention it at 6:something). Take a look at 4:44. He is almost four-wheeling on the curbing, while you are just grazing it. This is very important. I set up passes all day by taking advantage of people who cut themselves short on corner exit. On some corners, he appears to even put a tire in the dirt. I'll hang half of my right side tires off the track over the gravel at some tracks just to get that last inch (hey, I paid to use the track, I'll use the whole thing!).
Cool video! Have fun, and shiny side up!
What a GREAT video! I've never seen a lap broken down like this, excellent job. I'd love to see more like this.
It's better than rocket science, it's racecar science!
Some of your best content, you have coached me for a few years now! Thanks
Just found this channel the other day from insidesimracing. Love what you do here Shaun! Subbed, looking forward to keeping up with the channel. Awesome info!
One of the best videos about sim racing i've seen. I need to start watching more replays.. We can learn so much about our driving
Excellent break down Shaun. Really good work here. Thanks for doing these.
That's really intuitive. I'm going to be watching this video quite a few times. This is really useful to practice with. Trail braking has always been a sore spot with me, and I'm usually faster in corners where it's not necessary or impossible. I also have to work on widening out my lines as well, I do the same thing that you do when I wind up braking too late into a tight corner.
Excellent breakdown and sound advice all around. I really like how you make the comparative videos with yourself and the other.
I love this series first video I watched and I learned so much on how to correct my mistakes and how sensitive everything is to get the best time you can
Great video. Please, do this often. I'd also love to see some kind of follow up where you were able to 'fix' your line to improve your lap times.
Superb video Shaun. Very interesting
Spot on, it's amazing how the slight differences add up.
Great vid! Comparing lines like this looks incredibly useful. Is there any software that makes this easy to do? Its just amazing how subtle changes add up to huge margins every lap. I am slowly realizing that as of late.
Dave Fitz thanks buddy, will do!
iSpeed also lets you compare your pedal inputs and the driving lines of your laps compared to other published lapfiles. It might not be as extensive as VRS, but for me its much faster to get a quick look.
Download the setup and .blap (best lap) files from virtual racing school that Dave posted, then race against it in the exact same weather and track conditions by loading the .blap file in iracing and set the delta timer to "vs comparison sector" so it resets every sector so you dont get too far behind to miss out on learning something on each and every corner. I find it easier with the ghost car turned off as it blocks the view a bit but you can adjust the ghost car transparency in one of the ini files if you find that easier. Left foot braking is imo essential in the MX5 (others will disagree) and using the auto clutch and auto blip will cost you 0.04 per shift so be sure to use manual clutch and set a steering wheel button to the clutch if you want to keep the ability to left foot brake (or make a macro for one of the paddles - apparently its illegal)
sonic_blue excellent, thanks for the info.
Brilliant analysis, thank you. Yes, I definitely "cheat" for the corners too, and I see plenty of others doing the same. Thanks for taking the time and effort to break it down. Now, to fix things... :-)
Finding so many good videos on this channel... cheers!
Well done this is inspiring for my next sessions to wring out those extra 10ths...even if it's just chasing the some random guy on a public server!
That's a great job of breaking it all down. Yeah, I can see that you are definitely rusty. But you can pick up a few tenths and be back to form. Some of it is just lightning reflexes and clarity of lines and braking points. Great teaching video. Well done.
Great video Shaun! Thanks for breaking this down. It was very helpful.
Nice video and breakdown. If you keep putting videos like this out we'll all be Iracing Pros lol.
Awesome video, Shaun! I'll have to remember this video the next time I hop into practice to make sure I'm not "cheating" into a corner, and making sure I'm using every inch of the track. 👍
This was honestly an excellent analysis. Very well done, thank you.
Very good and informative video. I like this a lot!
Thanks for this Shaun! I really liked seeing the comparison and hope to see more of them.
My God Keep this kind videos coming man! Helps me a lot!
How informative and well-produced. Thanks for this, Shaun.
Great tips. I've been iRacing for only about a week but i've gotten to a point on the MX5 where i just can't find any more lap time and it's frustrating because three's soooo much lap time to gain.
This is exactly what i was looking for to learn how to drive the MX5. It seems to be all about using gentle braking to rotate the car on entry and through the middle of the turn
Great video this week Shaun. The 3rd party apps (VRS iSpeed etc), quite as well as looking at comparison laps like this. Food for thought
If you do more of these in the future, it'd be great if you put the gas/brake bars on the screen somewhere so we can see more clearly when each of you is on throttle or braking. The brake lights timing can be kind of funky in iRacing replays from my experience.
awesome break down of the lap. Thanks for sharing.
Amzing break down Mr. Cole, this mean's u must be a wizard
More of these please!
Love this video Shaun. Been watching since Isrtv :)
Shawn, great video. I am an habitual "early inner". It is amazing how it all adds up. Thank you for the lesson.
Great video.
I think a lot of it comes down to practice too. If I practice a track for a whole week, I can usually get competitive times, but you need to be dedicated to learning that track.
Thank goodness I'm not a professional, running a Sim you can throw your car off the track as much as you want and it doesn't cost a penny.
This is a very very helpful video. Thanks!! Keep 'em coming.
this is great stuff! Also saw some thing I was doing wrong myself.

This is a fantastic video!! So helpful. Well done!
Very interresting !The racing line is very important.
I think it's his corner entry, he's shortening the corners by braking and entering sharper, which gives him a better exit. Kind of like "diamonding" the corner
This goes for a lot of us racers, we all steer in to quickly... I once got that told at me when karting when i was young and that always stayed in my mind. It's not how u enter a corner but how quick u can leave the corner.
But then again i need to have it from my decent and stable driving instead being fast, thats why my quallie's usually suck :(, Great video that will help a whole lot of people.
Fantastic video, congratulations!
Great idea for a video and extremely helpful! I would love to see more of these!
Great comparison, I want more like this
This is an amazing breakdown, well done sir. Very helpful!
Great vid Shaun, lots of interesting stuff
what i learnt here is that using all the track and trailbraking is the secret here nice vid shaun, you learning like me too lol
Excellent analysis! Well worth watching. Sub.
Such a good informative video! Love it! Thanks.
Sure did help. Good content here my man. Just subscribed 👌
this earned you another sub, what an awesome video!
Awesome idea, and great presentation.
Thanks Shawn, very well done
You're great Shaun. You should know that!
Great analyse! Thanks for that video
Amazing Sir. Great respect for this video!
excellent video thank you for the work you put in there.
great video! im sure many people can find something in their driving! 👍
Very educating and helpful. Thanks.
I learned so much from this video! Incredible, thank you so much!
I love this series!
Great video just getting into iracing very helpful.
Great job! I learned some important info! Thanxs...
Nice analysis, well done.
how is it at 6:24 going that far past the white line with all 4 wheels doesn't disqualify the lap time?
Shaun, I guess you didn't see my comment on the last video. A major part of your time loss that you're not seeing is the use of auto clutch. Especially on tracks like this with long straights. Start using the clutch manually for upshifts, even if you keep using the paddles (it will feel weird at first but you will get used to it), or run an H-pattern. The difference in pace with the clutch and quick shifts is enough to give you an edge to make passes, or to hold off the guys behind you. Trust me.
I just watched the full race, and the last lap battles are the perfect example of where that auto clutch failed you. Absolutely would've smoked that guy on the back straight or even coming to the line if you were clutching for yourself. :-)
I am working on this! Thank you!
I agree. Auto clutch kills the momentum in the mx5 big time. I highly recommend using a H pattern shifter.
I think keeping Big Smoke's hungry *ss out of the car is a good way to gain a few tenths.
he mentioned it right at the beginning of the video that he would be discussing it in the future...
thank you so much, this is a very graphic help. this is amazing.
I've been racing online under the name "Exit-Speed_ftw" since 2011. Not real sims though, games like gran turismo and project cars. In those games 95% of your opponents brake too late, brake early, hope you don't get divebombed off the track, focus on exit speed and you'll be carving through the field like a needle through jello.
wait when did the sim pit start making videos again boy do i have a lot to watch
good one this time, nice analysis no how to apply this!
Great video, im a bit perplexed though.
Adria's lap was actually quite scruffy, hows it possible he was that much faster than you? He even hit gravel in the first two turns :S.
Just hit your braking and tight apex's and i think you'd be faster than someone like him, your driving is super clean, even if with a bit of cheat cornering and less confident braking. You got this Shaun!!
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!
Great video. Very good content. Thank you!
Great video, this will be helpful for me.
Great video, but you can probably also gain a decent amount of time by babying the car on your outlap then racing full attack on your next lap. if you mess up or your time doesn't count, you're better off going back to the garage and getting new tires. For some reason, cold tires are faster in iRacing than hot ones.
I'm making the same mistakes, great video
Kerbs are usually not a part of the track (which is bound within white lines) so Adria is going off-track on a couple of occasions. That's why he is faster.
very good video!
8 carlengths?? weird counting tbh .. but i think i get what you meant :D - iam more impressed how you recover every time after a corner
I don't race sims, I race real cars, what I like to do is brake in a straight line and turn the car on the throttle... aiming to be full throttle at apex... leaves me vulnerable under braking but a ninja at the exit
Real cool. Thanks Shaun! What about the driving line that you can enable in iRacing? Is it fairly accurate to how the fast drivers tend to drive?
wow Shaun awesome video thanks
Great tutorial!
4:27 Adrias Lap don't count! Leaving track with 4 wheels.
Oliver Zimmermann I also thought that.
Oliver Zimmermann it's still ( technically the track) that's used if u go too wide and if there are many cars on that part of the track battleing it out
awesome video Shaun
Thanx Shawn
Not fair, he has better aerodynamics
Great video :) Loved it.
this is such a great video.
Awesome video!
