You guys are in shit bands if they wont let you do anything technical. Having said that, are you doing it when it's appropriate to do so and it sounds good? Cause I'd be pissed off if the drummer in my band did that and it sounded like shit.
the beginning is so damn true man. I play some crazy polyrhythm and my girlfriend doesnt think anything of it, then i play some simple ass beat and shes like wow that was cool... and im thinkin well now im just confused hahaha
Seriously love everything you are doing here; affection for different genre, slow deconstruction of grooves/fills, down to earth attitude, etc. We need more teachers like you.
I've just watched 4 of your videos. They are the best resources I've found. Your explanation is so clean and systematic; in a word: neat. Keep up this beautiful work! Respect from Mexico.
Mate... you are helping my playing so much, I had to write and thank you for all the encouragement, my practice sessions have increased thanks to finding your site, if only I lived in the states I'd be straight round to yours for one 2 one lessons like a shot! Whilst there are some half decent drum teachers in the UK I fined American drummers more knowledgeable and enthusiastic about playing and technique. Any way, thanks a million. Best wishes from me here in the wet and windy UK!
I would like to know where to go to improve. I know that I have to learn fills and beats and songs and grade songs, all that business, but in my grade books it doesn't show things like half time shuffles or playing to the style not your ability. It would be really nice to have a "checklist" almost to be able to work from to try to be able to be as good of a drummer as possible, maybe even stages to becoming a session drummer? Btw Great lesson as always!
A lesson on some grooves of Billy Martin, of Medeski Martin and Wood!! You are a great teacher sir. Ive played drums for about 17 years or so (with a break or two in between), and I have learned (and re-learned) all kinds of good stuff on these videos. Thanks for doing what you do.
is that vintage old school of Soultone on the ride? sounds pretty sweet by the way, thanks for the second part, which you sorta change the time-signature while playing the same beat. I was thinking if you could make another metric modulation video that teaches changing the division instead of just the emphasis, i.e. semiquaver to triplet, or quaver to triplet? usually changing from triplet to quaver is not as hard as doing the reverse. :) Thanks for the videos!
donno if you're much of a zeppelin fan (i dont see how any drummer could not be) but i believe bonham does this a good deal in fool in the rain. i learned in unknowingly just to play along to the song and it is so fun. he switches back and forth from quarter notes on the hihat to triplet notes o the ride with the hihat lifting in quarter notes. sounds super cool!
Brilliant lessons Dude. Lovin your simple style. I dont know if youve done a lesson on this but even just a quick chat on using different cymbals, i.e. which cymbal to use at which time, during a song? Obviously, different cymbals have a different pitch but is there more to it than that? I see musicians simultaneously hitting two cymbals at once- is this because the pitch of the two cymbals are complimentary? or is it just to add depth? I hope you understand? Lol
ok how about a lesson on choosing the right resonant head with what you have. i have evans hydraulic 2-ply but not sure on which resonant head i should get.
I would like to see videos about tuning double bass drums. Meaning two different bass drums, recording and mic tips. also tips for limb independence and or speed exercises thanks
No problem. I know if you search around websites such as Muscicians Friend, you could fin a drumset around that price. There aren't many kits that I can think of that are around $1000 at the moment, but you could always try the mapex mydentity site becuase the drumsets cost as much as the stuff you want for them and they are a really good quality.
hey , i'd like to buy a drum set , what do you recommend me to buy ? like a drum set that is perfectly not high priced cause am not that rich , and a drum set which stays with me for a long time " i mean like all stages , noob - beginner - semi pro ... etc. , " can you recommend something close to that for me ? :D + you're awesome :)
great lesson, man. i was just wondering, which songs use this? i'd really like an example or two just to hear it in a practical application. i like most music except for metal, but if there are only examples in metal then that's cool too. i'd prefer an example in rock or funk, or even blues (it's the type of music my band plays). thanks again, man, i got a lot out of this lesson.
Hey just letting you know i think your videos are great and you are a natural talent for dumming. On that note, as one drummer/musician to another i would like to ask what is your take/opinion of Thomas Hakke (drummer of Meshuggah)? Is there a more simple science to what he is doing? I have heard that it took him 6 months to learn the foot work for there song called "Bleed"? Would you have to just be able to feel it more or be able to focus on more than one thing? Just a curious musician!
First of all, thanks for taking the time to do these videos. I am a beginner and I would like to learn some basic fills. I get into a grove and I find it hard to play a fill to change things up. Thanks in advance!
Pistolpete gracia Go to my channel homepage and search "Practical Drum Fills". There will be a few videos come up. As well there are a ton of lessons in the members area on the site that you would find interesting I think. hope that helps!
Hey Stephen. Thanks for the video. Regarding that two measure fill beginning after 8:18, I like it and have tried to replicate it but just can't. Could you please break it down? Could you please transcribe those two measures and show it to us? Thanks!
yeah man,i was suprised to,tosin abasi from tram wanted to have prigden as a drummer but he was working with the memorials so he said call my cousin, eric moore. Theres an interview where the band explained it
Hello, I know that I am like 4 or 5 years late lol but in the video you asked us to write what we would like to see a video of. Well, I am having a lot of trouble with the more artistic jazz soloing. I would love to see a video about melodic jazz drum solos that "tell a story" and how to approach them in my playing. I am actually a decent jazz drummer when keeping time and comping, so if I can improve my solo game, it would help tremendously. thank you in advance.
Awesome lessons! I've been watching your videos lately and they've really helped me out. Definitely thinking about the student plan to learn even more. Keep up the great job!
Makes my day to know the lessons are helping so much! I'll keep it up as long as you guys keep tuning in. And you're welcome to sign up anytime as a student of mine.
Steve!! Could you do a lesson on techniques that could help me to play fast 16th hi-hat rhythms?? I suffered a servere wrist injurt some years ago, got 12 pins in it, had my Scaphoid removed. I only habe 40% movement in it now ... I LOVE my funk and hip-hop loops but I'm struggling to find an easy way to get nice fast and silky smooth 'The Funky Drummer' speed 16th's on my hats .... Can you help me?? Danny
also, this style of shifting is done a lot in progressive metal. i found myself grooving to that clip at 7:00 way more than i should be grooving to a example drum beat haha great stuff!
Hey Man, I don't play drums. I program a bit and believe it or not I think your lessons are helping program more live sounding and real drummer sounding parts. So Yeah. Thanks Dude. Someday maybe I'll have the space for a drum set. :)
I play the side in a pipeband as well so when you are talking dotted eighth you also mean a cut as well? My limmited understanding is you can't have one without the other? Great lesons BTW love this stuff!!!
Stephen, I really want to learn more in the odd timing, modulation area. More intermediate to advanced with a brief overview on basics. I'm talking like use of 5s 7s 9s, metric modulation and just weird weird time signatures. And perhaps just like when you go about explaining them, could you quickly define some terms that you use because sometimes it's easy to get lost in the words. :P You are the best for lessons on the net! Keep it up! :)
not saying youre wrong, but can you tell me how its not half time, just for my knowledge.. and i found my self tonight using the terminology from this vid! awesomeness! thanx bro! youre awesome!
man i´m having serious troubles the way my drum kit sounds..the snare is not that bad..but all the three toms do..i dont like...can u put a video tuning them?...tks
Hey this is a cool lesson, um currently trying to get my head around Wasted Years (Iron Maiden) And i think it kinda does this displacement technique on the hi hat, just wondering if you could break that down in a lesson at some stage? just a thought thanks =)
can you make a video about staying balanced on the kit. I sometimes feel like im going to fall over while playing. This issue is not covered by anyone.
how about a quick lesson on keeping time on your hi-hat, the "anchor" as you called it. my right foot gets confused when I try to keep time with my left foot.
The lessons are really helpfull, but not the only ones on RUclips. The thing which makes yours the best, is your presentation. The lessons are very clear, you're not trying to show off (although my girlfriend was actually impressed ;p) and somehow you made me laugh as well xd Love it!
my approach to these kind of things was, take the subdivisions (8th triplets) and make or better "name" them otherwise (16th nothes". works great with a half time shufle, keeping th quarter plse with the bass makes a nice bass drum pattern, doubleing it up then (seemingly) by playing ablast beat with the triplets. great fun!
Hey Stephen I love your videos, they've helped me grow as a drummer! I have a question...The fill that you're doing at 8:20, is there any videos you've done on those types of fills or anything similar?
Could you also do a tutorial how to get a girlfriend?
I just played her this and now I am single. thanks
he stole ur gril
he stole ur gril
Like a George Foreman grill? That's not very nice...
You need a video titled "How to Anger/Confuse Your Band with Implied Metric Modulation"
+Joakim Antonsson hahahaha omg me too. they hate bands like messhugah lol.
The only way I could ever impress my girl on the drums is to stop playing them. We're not together anymore. lol
same for me bro
Love your drumming videos Stephen! You have a great teaching quality. Keep up the awesome job. Learning lots from you.
Thanks Barry...glad they help!
Seriously love everything you are doing here; affection for different genre, slow deconstruction of grooves/fills, down to earth attitude, etc. We need more teachers like you.
Stephen Taylor just happen to be THE BEST Drum lessons Teacher on youtube, I swear, thanks Mr. Taylor.
Thanks!
I don't even play the drums, and I'm loving these tutorials. Metric modulation can be for everyone :)
I'm just discovering your channel but I am thoroughly enjoying it, my man. Thank you and keep up the awesome work, rock on!
What I love is that this video was made 2 years ago, and he still replies to people's comments. Very good swagger on the kit.
I'm not near hip enough to have swagger lol!
Man the way you explain yourself is so clear! love the lessons and the ideas you you have, keep them coming please.
So glad they help
Implied metric, like other sophisticated techniques, impresses musicians far more than the general public.
Good lesson, though.
I've just watched 4 of your videos. They are the best resources I've found. Your explanation is so clean and systematic; in a word: neat. Keep up this beautiful work!

incredible how that puts such a new dimension to a beat. you are a great drummer and a great instructor. rock on!
Jazz?
Stephen, my hat is off to you sir... Your presentation is spot-on! I'll be exploring your stuff... Thanks!
Love the sound of your kit! Learning a lot from you... THANKS!
the odd time signatures are really intriguing man! keep em' coming!
A lesson on some grooves of Billy Martin, of Medeski Martin and Wood!! You are a great teacher sir. Ive played drums for about 17 years or so (with a break or two in between), and I have learned (and re-learned) all kinds of good stuff on these videos.

Put out a video on how to make dank memes.
very good teaching...enjoyed the lesson very much
It's 7 in the morning, it's very cold and I'm very tired, but that Gavin Harrison light joke had me chuckling. Nice job - doesn't happen often.
so, this video was on the related videos section of the screen for quite a while until i decided to click it, you have a new subscriber!

by the way, how do you like that vintage old sch cymbal? I am thinking of getting one, and that model sounds pretty good
Gavin uses it at the end of Hatesong on the arriving somewhere live dvd, the end of Prodigal by Porcupine Tree too.
What mics and interface/gear do you use to record? Sounds great!

One of the few good tutorials on RUclips. Most guys have no business doing this.
best video I've seen in forever. BRAVO Stephen!!

How do you tune your drums? They sound killer
The first four minutes I was like "Ok, I have no idea what he´s talking about." Once he started playing I was like "Ah, yeah. That´s easy!".
Can you do a lesson on how to improve your fills or complicate basic fills
What kinda audio interface are your drum mics ran into?

Goom jat, ga-goom-goom jat! haha, mouth drums rule! Every dummer needs a good mouth drum kit.
Reading Sheet music? Basic to Advanced? Jazz Charts?

Could you explain a bit what Tony "Thunder" Smith does on Jan Hammer's song twenty-one?
man your vids help me out a bunch! thanks dude!
Is there sheet music for this video lesson?
not saying youre wrong, but can you tell me how its not half time, just for my knowledge.. and i found my self tonight using the terminology from this vid! awesomeness! thanx bro! youre awesome!

very informative video! In my opinion, I'd say I like the sound of the anchor. It fills in the overall feel.
how about a quick lesson on keeping time on your hi-hat, the "anchor" as you called it. my right foot gets confused when I try to keep time with my left foot.
Zac Brown Band does that same beat on 3:20 on "Uncaged". cool stuff
Are you a tunebot kinda guy? What heads are your mainstays?
Awesome drumming and technique.
Thanks so much for the kind words Randy. Glad you enjoyed the lesson.
*****
bro could u like do a tutoria with all different drum's technique's name?
theres a cool track by freak kitchen called 'taste my fist' that uses the new time idea thing that sounds amazing!
Who do you drum for?
How to impress girls other than your "girlfriend" ( New Title) This is why we drum :)
Whats your cymbal setup here ?
by watching this i realized i do this alot in my own drumming naturally in my hiphop/funk drumming lol thanks
The lessons are really helpfull, but not the only ones on RUclips. The thing which makes yours the best, is your presentation. The lessons are very clear, you're not trying to show off (although my girlfriend was actually impressed ;p) and somehow you made me laugh as well xd Love it!
Great lesson. Thanks!!
Man, how'd you tune your kick? At 2:10 it's really singing! ;)
Haha the intro was really funny, good work man
pls tell me, what kind of snare you play!
"do you see what I'm doing" ....lol, that was great!
my approach to these kind of things was, take the subdivisions (8th triplets) and make or better "name" them otherwise (16th nothes". works great with a half time shufle, keeping th quarter plse with the bass makes a nice bass drum pattern, doubleing it up then (seemingly) by playing ablast beat with the triplets. great fun!

Could you do a lesson on "Unluck" by James Blake? Loved this one!!
