* Bart says 'we call them bergen'. Please note: mountain = berg, hill = heuvel. What Bart meant to say is that names of hills in Dutch usually end in 'berg'. And for Dutch standards (flat landscape) any hill is considered a mountain.

Ik kom uit Indonesie en ik ben naar Nederland gegaan voor mijn stagiaire period (deze jaar).
Daar ik woon in America, Limburg voor 3 maanden (Februari - April). Ik was een stagiaire in rozen kas en ik vind dat is mooie dorp. Veel paarden, vriendelijke mensen, en nog veel meer.
Ik raad het ten sterkste aan!

I once did a 20k charity walk around the villages of Horst. As an American, I found it amusing to walk through "America". So now I always joke, "yeah, well I walked TO America"!

We have a lot of countries around here. Oostenrijk (Austria), Zwitserland (can guess which country that is), Siberië,, Egypte, Australië. Only America is a village though of about 1,000 to 1,500 people. The rest are areas that got that name.
Or road names for most of the time, like Laan van Nieuw Oost Indie near where I live, where I thought most of the immigrants from Indonesia used to live before the 1940s, but no 😄

Most American employees at the consulate in Amsterdam don't speak Dutch and don't bring in a Dutch speaker when a Dutch person is obviously struggling to understand English. And by the way, Hoeksta's ideas are diamettically opposed to what the average Dutch person believes. Possibly the worst ever.

Literally one of the easier languages to pick up for a native English speaker.
I learned a lot from "The Island at the Center of the World" by Russell Shorto (The epic story of Dutch Manhattan the the forgotten colony that shaped America)
Highly recommend that book! His book about Amsterdam is also very interesting

No..i think this is because in small villages the didn't do alot of last names. We weren't very inventif with names and most of the times the children were named after grandparents and so on but also in the rest of the village. So when you were talking about jan and there would be more off them they named the father of them. So it was jan of kees, jan-kees.

I mean, we know a lot of last names that were chosen "ages" ago like "Visser, Schilder etc. Hoe dan ook zeker interessant om eens op te zoeken. Ik geef nog wel een gil wanneer ik iets wijzer ben geworden. Dank voor je reactie trouwens ;-)

They are civil servants, which means they view their posts sort of like a soldier does when deployed - but civilians, not military.

We'd like to thank the US embassy for all their amazing work in the Netherlands. We hope you can persuade our government to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the Dutch embassy there again. Thank you. There's no reason for the Netherlands, this fine independent country, to keep following the foreign policy of other EU nations when it does not sync with their own national interests.
