Janet was such a heavyweight and legit was like the biggest star in the world during those years, so sad that the industry’s push to erase her has been so successful. Notice that We Belong Together was “introduced” by two earlier singles (U Make Me Wanna and It’s Like That) that sort of got her back into the public eye so to speak. If she had 2 more songs as good (in terms of pop reception) as #Beautiful in 2013/14, she could’ve had another comeback like 2005.
She could've also made her number 2 songs Lover Boy and Can't let go get number 1 status . But of course that didn't happen because of Mottola's pandering.

Also, considering the fact after the year 1999 radio programming and formats became extremely youth driven hence the Celine fall off on the charts.

It's incredible how Madonna ruled for so long not just with Pop songs even with ballads, considering that she hasn't an extremely powerful voice and vocal range (comparing to Whitney, Mariah or Celine). But she's the Queen 👑 she's a truly artist, good singer (not awesome) dancer, song writer, producers etc. She shows to the world that with hard work you can create art and be successful without a natural blessed voice (work with the things you have)

Mariah and Madonna was still charting high past 2006 though (relatively speaking). 2012-2013 is when both Mariah and Madonna started being relegated to legacy acts and not as the “flagship” of their labels.
um after 2006 Mariah had another number 1 (Touch My Body) and few other top 10 hits... even in 2014 while being past her 40s she achieved a top 20 (and an ACTUAL top 20, not just a song that debuted in the top 20 and then was nowhere to be found on the charts the week after)

MAN! These charts were COMPETITIVE!! These girls were dropping BANGERS back to back to back amongst themselves!! All different flavors & different styles. I expected Janet to start it off but get eclipsed by Madonna who broke out giant in 1983/1984. Janet didn't get serious until Control. And I expected Whitney to challenge dominant Madonna with the 2 trading back & forth. But then the 1990s came & this chart went CRAZY!! So much good music from each one!! Janet vs. Madonna vs. Whitney was expected. But then Mariah showed up & complicated everything!! Then Soundtrack Queen Celine got in the mix & made it messier! These women were going AT IT on them charts! AMAZING!!
The behavior of the charts in the 80s were so much different than today. There was always a steady trajectory upwards and once it peaked there was a steady but quick decline. They also really knew how to time single releases.
Competition tends to do that. It was uber competetive for female recording artists during that period. Labels timed their releases to increase the chances of their flagship to be on the top of the charts. Mariah began in 1990 but even she was affected by the competitive nature of 80s music for female artists. Maverick’s flagship artist was Madonna, Arista was Whitney, Virgin was Janet. Columbia wanting to get a piece of that lucrative market acquired their own flagship with Mariah. Today theres no such thing as the franchise of their labels. Execs saw just how much power their main acts had gained by being the golden goose of their labels that it almost looked like the artist running the label and not the otherway around. They would never give that much power to new artists today, and so they tend to push multiple mediocore artists who sells relatively well than to get behind a single artist who has massive sale and appeal.
For me, Madonna and Janet Jackson are the most impactful artists in a music industry. Their works in 90's decade are real masterpieces that give inspiration to other artists these days. To me, Ray of Light is the best album of Madonna and The Velvet Rope is the best album of Janet.
More than half of the singers in this GENERATION or Last generation got inspired by Mariah Carey lol I'm not saying that Madonna and Janet were not big or impactful anyway, but for 90s I dont see any of them can beat Mariah ass, And To me, they’re more impact in 80s but 90s? No

In the 90s, Janet had six Hot 100 number one hits, number one albums, broke records on the charts, iconic sold out world tours, became the first and ONLY artist to have number one hits in three different years AND in two different decades off one album with Rhythm Nation, signed the biggest recording contract in history with Velvet Rope, was nominated for an Oscar for Again, was the second top selling female artist of 90s right behind Mariah etc. There is literally on camera interviews of icons like Britney and Beyonce citing Janet as an influence back in the 90s when they were new artists and Janet had only been in the music game a little over a decade at that point. Have several seats and do the homework on Janet, please and thank you. Madonna I agree had more impact in the 80s. However, she still had major impact in the 90s with the iconic Vogue and Erotica era, Blond Ambition Tour etc, which influenced the likes of Lady Gaga, Britney, Christina etc.

But in terms of reputation and success, Celine was the latest in the vocal trinity and the pop divas of the 90s. She wasn't a competition to Janet, Mariah, Whitney and Madonna in the early 90s. Celine's breakthrough came at about the same time as Toni Braxton, Shania Twain, and Sheryl Crow. Mariah's instant success in 1990 is partly the reason why so many people think that she's older than she is or that she's been around longer than she did, when she's as young as Celine or Jlo (roughly). She's been in the mainstream spotlight earlier than both Jlo and Celine.

I love that this video started off with Janet’s album projected and also ended with her album. Despite the unfair treatment she’s received, she still has amazing longevity. And she’s currently the last one to have a new and original charting song on the Hot 100 (Made For Now). That’s so amazing, her span is from 1982-2018! It's interesting how in the 90's their all simultaneously at the top, but after the late 00's there's not a dent on the chart between any of them (with the exception of the re-release of All I want for Christmas).
All these ladies had longevity, but Madonna and Mariah especially stick out to me for having eras of HITS that stretch 20+ years. Janet is an honorable mention, and it's a shame that her blackballing stunted what should've been her golden years. Whitney and Celine both reached heights none of the other ladies have, but their success was a little more restricted to a several year span.
I am old enough to remember the reign of all of these women and let me tell you, regardless of who you like, you got great music, performance and talent. Raw and talented was their eras. Not this autotune crab today's music listeners have to listen to. Thank God for Bruno Mars and Adele and a small select few.
CONTROL is an interesting album chart-wise: "When I Think Of You" peaked at #1. "Let's Wait Awhile" peaked at #2. "Nasty" peaked at #3. "What Have You Done For Me Lately" peaked at #4. "Control" peaked at #5. "The Pleasure Principle" should have hit #1 also in my opinion.

It's incredible how Madonna ruled for so long not just with Pop songs even with ballads, considering that she hasn't an extremely powerful voice and vocal range (comparing to Whitney, Mariah or Celine). But she's the Queen 👑 she's a truly artist, good singer (not awesome) dancer, song writer, producers etc.

Mariah and Madonna was still charting high past 2006 though (relatively speaking). 2012-2013 is when both Mariah and Madonna started being relegated to legacy acts and not as the “flagship” of their labels.
um after 2006 Mariah had another number 1 (Touch My Body) and few other top 10 hits... even in 2014 while being past her 40s she achieved a top 20 (and an ACTUAL top 20, not just a song that debuted in the top 20 and then was nowhere to be found on the charts the week after)

The behavior of the charts in the 80s were so much different than today. There was always a steady trajectory upwards and once it peaked there was a steady but quick decline. They also really knew how to time single releases.
Competition tends to do that. It was uber competetive for female recording artists during that period. Labels timed their releases to increase the chances of their flagship to be on the top of the charts. Mariah began in 1990 but even she was affected by the competitive nature of 80s music for female artists. Maverick’s flagship artist was Madonna, Arista was Whitney, Virgin was Janet. Columbia wanting to get a piece of that lucrative market acquired their own flagship with Mariah. Today theres no such thing as the franchise of their labels. Execs saw just how much power their main acts had gained by being the golden goose of their labels that it almost looked like the artist running the label and not the otherway around. They would never give that much power to new artists today, and so they tend to push multiple mediocore artists who sells relatively well than to get behind a single artist who has massive sale and appeal.
For me, Madonna and Janet Jackson are the most impactful artists in a music industry. Their works in 90's decade are real masterpieces that give inspiration to other artists these days. To me, Ray of Light is the best album of Madonna and The Velvet Rope is the best album of Janet.
More than half of the singers in this GENERATION or Last generation got inspired by Mariah Carey lol I'm not saying that Madonna and Janet were not big or impactful anyway, but for 90s I dont see any of them can beat Mariah ass, And To me, they’re more impact in 80s but 90s? No

Have several seats and do the homework on Janet, please and thank you. Madonna I agree had more impact in the 80s. However, she still had major impact in the 90s with the iconic Vogue and Erotica era, Blond Ambition Tour etc, which influenced the likes of Lady Gaga, Britney, Christina etc.

I love that this video started off with Janet’s album projected and also ended with her album. Despite the unfair treatment she’s received, she still has amazing longevity. And she’s currently the last one to have a new and original charting song on the Hot 100 (Made For Now). That’s so amazing, her span is from 1982-2018! Hopefully she’ll chart in 2022, which would bring it to 40 years!!

All these ladies had longevity, but Madonna and Mariah especially stick out to me for having eras of HITS that stretch 20+ years. Janet is an honorable mention, and it's a shame that her blackballing stunted what should've been her golden years. Whitney and Celine both reached heights none of the other ladies have, but their success was a little more restricted to a several year span.
