- Mariah Carey’s tribute to Patti LaBelle during the 1998 Essence Awards singing a medley of “If Only You Knew” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” during the ceremony, which was held on April 10, 1998, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Lyrics:
If Only You Knew
I must have rehearsed my lines
A thousand times
Until I had them memorized
But when I get up the nerve
To tell you the words
They never seem to come out right
Oh, If only you knew
How much I do, do love you
Oh, If only you knew
I said, You don't know how much I love you, Sugar
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Mmmmmm...
Where...
Troubles melt like lemon drops
Way above
That's where you'll find me
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Bluebirds Fly
And if those happy little bluebirds fly
Over the Rainbow, Why then
Then oh, why
Can't I
Why can't I
Why can't I

04/27/21 UPDATE:
Mariah Carey referenced this performance by saying, "I didn't do so great on that - I need to watch it again, you guys." It appears, Mariah *did* watch this video again, later admitting on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) “Okaaaay.. I guess it’s not so bad!”
That would be an understatement!
Thank you to the "Lambily" for all the views and comments on this video throughout the years!
Where did she reference this.....
this is 97 right? she must be 27 the time

She realized she can’t sing like this again so she appreciates it more now. You know she ain’t lip syncing when her nostrils are wide open like here. Now she just poses and smiles like an overweight playboy bunny past her prime.
the way she belted sugar with her rasp was magical
ARTU Yess yes and yesss! Gave me goosebumps
And unique, too. The one and only MC!!
And DA RESONANCE
Sounded so good 😫😫
The range👑
Mariah’s tone is just incomparable
Mariah humming slays all these new artist
Yessssss the humm alone! And when she opens up that mouth it's game over!

So true
Omg those runs and melisma. She is such a brilliant vocalist.

Performing is a kind of art
when she does 'blue birds fly' run, that part is so visionary it's beautiful like a fairytale story 😍😢
OMG YES YOU CAN SEE THEM IN YOUR MIND WHEN SHE SINGS THAT!!
Yess! Exactly how to describe that lol
I just love the way she sings the word 'birds' I feel that shit.
26 notes in just 4 seconds. Nobody will EVER touch the Queen
That is the best part!!
that “blue birds fly” riff is the reason i wake up every morning.
Absolutely. It’s the reason why I fly
Thats what i typed into the search bar, next to mariah carey 🤣
She slaps 👋 the blue birds 🤣
this is undoubtly one of the greatest Mariah's performances
ikr
Agree dahhlin'
Absolutely
She is amazing here, but i cant explain, her voice sounds so tired and raspy, like it was not healthy singing that way.
gabri raph there was nothing unhealthy about her singing her. She always sings with great technique. Her nodules were just acting up around this time.
Her raspiness sounds so good to my ears. I am disgusted how other singers faking a raspy voice just to show their uniqueness.
Bitch was swatting flies for the gods at the end of her performance! You betta do ya thing miss! Absolutely adore this performance!
Lol, Yaaaas, YOU BETTER PREACH!

Her tone there is very similar to the famous "Butterfly" riff. I love her creativity so much.
i keep replaying it because it's so beautiful and because it's jawdropping...how could she do that...

There's nothing better than seeing Mariah swatting the air when she hits the high notes
🤣🤣 Right!!
Yessss she’s either swatting or punching! That’s how you know she feeling it!
Swat them damn flies to hell!!!
I too loved her swatting the air after she hit an easy note for her natural alto to soprano voice.
I know something better than that! Mariah running on stage while hitting Make it happen high notes 🤣
Highly addicted to this performance, it's perfection!
Same with you
This was in honor of Patty. She was requested to sing.
Mariah was sick...but she still did that! Even sick....she out sings all of the newer artists.
SAy what?!?! She was sick singing like that
Yeah i read it somewhere to she was sick because of which her voice sounded different it was raspy. But that just added more to the performance. True living legend. I have only been listening to her recently. I wish the present generation instead of complaint that today's music sucks will search out for older artist like Mariah and appreciate her now rather than when it's too late.
@@Pixiemaniac she wasnt sick, that's her voice during this time, it gets raspy cause she overused it, she didnt get much rest
TRIBI Joey she was, her voice was naturally raspy during this era but you can hear by how nasally her tone is in this
And sick Mariah casually slayed Somewhere Over The Rainbow, giving us the best rendition thus far
my girl ate that shit real bad don’t play with her!!
Didn’t leave a single crumb 😩
Don't care if she wasnt on her prime, don't care if she is covering, don't care if her voice was raspy, this will always be one of mariah's best performances forever! Theses runs can melt some ears... Dear Lord
Amen
The raspiness and emotion in her voice made this performance exceptionally special
matheuspaog Facts
I love when she sounds raspy ❤️❤️
She is the true darling, a God of music
The thing that separates MC from the countless list of other singers who use melisma is the insane musicianship. Her melismas always seem to fit perfectly with the melody and tempo of the song, to the point where you don't even realise just how much riffing she's actually doing. It virtually never comes across as excessive, to me at least. It always seems to add meaning and expression without being done for the sake of it or to show off. Too many singers often get carried away with showing off fancy runs that display great skill and technique but little to no musicality. That for me is why MC is one of the GOATs.
When MARIAH touches your song it's not yours anymore ! BLESS
yeah every song she covered will be different hits. thats the way she is
Didn’t take Patti song period
That's so Random?! I think it’s better just me.
That's right. Those songs were meaningless until Mariah made a cover. 😍😍😍
um yea don’t disrespect patti...
“And if those happy little blue birds fly over the rainbow” was perfection!!!
👏👏 Exactly
One of Mariah's best live performances. Her arrangement of both songs is so thoughtful. You can tell that this tribute came from her heart. Just stunning.
So melodic.
An underappreciated quality...
She is such a multi-talent. Her skill at producing and arranging of vocals and music is absolutely underrappreciated. She has a soundscape all her own.@@tremaine861
No one will EVER be able to replace Mariah. Her recorded live performances from 20 years ago, still gives life today. And I love her hair like this. Goddess
Ever !!!!!
What an incredible night, Celine was seating front row, Whitney presenting the award while Mariah gave a perfect tribute.
omg really? didn’t know that
@@mattiapiraino710 Yes, at 1:22 I believe it was Celine who was wearing a white jumpsuit in the front row.
Ok so I finished my 8 hour shift just repeating this video.
my turn now?
same here!
She only stood for Mariah, and rightfully so. Everyone did great, but Mariah rapped pure soul into every word she sung. The color and tone in her voice here is absolutely extraordinary. Her raspiness here did something that her "prime" crystal clear notes of Daydream could never do...
¡THAT VOICE!. Neither in life nor in death, no one has had a voice like hers, no one has achieved as much musical magic as her.
I remember complaining back then that she didn't sound the same and sounded raspy or "sick". Now I watch it in complete amazement and wish to hear her do something like this again.
she did. it was her vocal chords saying save me, but she just kept singing.
junkyjunk1979 She is amazing here, but i cant explain, her voice sounds so tired and raspy, like it was not healthy singing that way.
gabri raph it was completely healthy. Her nodules were just preventing her from singing clearly
This is the best rendition of Somewhere over the rainbow ever. Completely different than the classic but still legendary, that is difficult to accomplish.
+Christopher Davis Yeah, it's gospel inspired. My favorite as well.
One of the few artists that can completely change the style of a song and still be considered just as great as the original.
It's a sort of cover of Patti's version. Go look it up!!

i think Pattis version is better
That voice, The control, The hair ! Always imitated, never duplicated

Mariah is a vocal monster
Those deadly melisma!!! So addictive

the lack of standing ovation is astounding. I swear people were pressed over her in the 90s
I agree, she deserved more. Hope it was just the camera and more stood
They always have been. As soon as she vocally proclaimed her blackness with pride people turned on her.
@@Landyn26That’s crazy I had no idea she received negative feedback for expressing she is also black…
This kind of singing style still exists today. It's the reason why almost every great female singer in this generation is always called "The Next Mariah". Even in the Philippines, Mariah has always been the standard in singing.
Period.
If you can sing a Mariah song, you'll win a singing competition.
The way she sings "Bluuue birds" is heartbreaking and so damn majestic and beautiful at the same time.
That last “why can’t I” is as everything. Felt that in my soul
Awwww. You can tell Mariah loves Patti and that Patti loves her baby Mariah. So cute.
amazing how she can OWN every song she will sing.
Literally every song. She is amazing!
she definitely must put a tribute of an album of some sort All Rendition/Cover songs of all of her influences, that could be awesome!
Hunni Patti ROSE from her seat like Jesus came down upon her when Mariah slayed them vocals dahling!!!!!!!!! 2:10-2:20

The way she pronounces her words !!
Her phrasing has always been top tier!! Like no other 👏
Ariana should learn to do this. Her pronunciation sucks ass.
"Howw much I love you.. " the way she sang "HOW" sounded so good
2:00 low note gives me chill. She did that downscale amazingly

Mariah's voice has its own personality.
I cant count the amount of times I’ve watched this
Me too!

Me four
Definitely over 100 times
same! I can’t get enough of this performance.
I like how she makes her own arrangement for Somewhere Over The Rainbow. I like her version
Is it only me or even just the hummmmm at 1:14 already sounds heavenly
If only Mariah knew what she just did to me
you don't hear concerts like this anymore
I remember in 2018 when my dad and I were talking at the table and this was playing on the tv in the back and he started shouting and cheering her on. He used to sing and produce and write so he really appreciated her skills. It was really cool to see how he cheered her on like he was watching football
It’s a performance that really shows her vocal athleticism. The runs, riffs & overall arrangement is not easy for any singer to perform!
Patti has always been so supportive of younger singers especially Mariah! I love their Godmother/Goddaughter relationship.
I wish Mariah could've recorded a version of If Only You Knew
Annalisa Marie
I totally agree with you, she would totally smash it. Her version here is so modern and just mellow. Love her to bits and everything this woman re-covers is always perfect.

0:52 queen of transitions. The fluidity between registers is otherworldly.
I don't care what anyone says...this is the most special voice I've ever heard.
I'm sorry but I don't care what anyone else says, to me Mariah will always be thee VOICE!
AMEN HALLELUJAH!
Stefan S Whitney is the voice and always will be but Mariah is still amazing :)
Darryl Boykins I believe that he said to HIM Mariah is the Voice which means its his opinion so...
Darryl Boykins Whitney is so basic. Marian is the true Queen
REALLY? Whitney basic? Like come on, it's possible to have respect for both. I love BOTH singers and what they've brought to singing. There's no need to diminish one to lift the other. Whitney basic my god what a laugh...
Why can't I sing like this. Why can't aaaAahaay?

Incredible vocal range, Mariah! She can migrate from low notes to high ones fantasticly!! Wondeful!
The fact that Mariah Carey is real blows my mind every single day ever since the first time I listened to her.

I love how she did her own thing on if only you knew .. She didn't just copy the vocal style of the song
I mean!!!! The arrangement! The vocals! The NOT overdoing it. Beautiful restraint resulting in a masterful performance leaving you wanting more.
The Queen of agility, ability and technique👌🏾 Mariah Carey!
Sublime.
my favourite mariah performance. her soul, her rasp and her emotions.
That moment when a singer's live performance during her "vocal decline" is still better than any pre-recorded vocal performance on the radio in the past decade...
It isn't a vocal "decline" even. She has the same range, same technique, just more protrusive nodules, so she's singing around rasp. Some would argue that this is better than her prime, because many critics dubbed her as emotionless at that time, but her performance her clearly raps soul into every note and run she does.
This isn't even a vocal decline but rather another transition period (just like what happened during her Emotions, Music box, Merry Christmas, and Daydream eras) as her nodules become bigger that doesn't suit to her high key 1990s records. The real vocal decline happened in 2015. If you'll compare 1997 to 2014, Mariah has an intact 5 octave range 2015 was the year her octaves become lower having a solid 3.3 octaves.
The reason why people think that her 1997 Butterfly Era was her vocal decline as her light tone shifted to more rasp darker tone. Experimenting her range once again.
coz the true decline is in rainbiw era wbk
@@riyu7710 the real decline happened in 2015. What she had during 1997-2014 were the result of her growing nodules, alcohol problem, fatigue, and lack of rest and recovery(as she often perform early in the morning or while she's sick). 2015 was the year when she can't access her full 5octaves and 3 seminotes range leaving her about 3 octaves in total.
Everyone raving about the runs but what about that perfect pitch ? Untouchable..
Her positions and layers of notes are so brilliant
2:11 onward was perfect. who am I kidding, this whole thing was my perfect.
Mariah has such beautiful tone, timbre, and musical arrangement skills that no one could ever recreate. She’s precise and on point even if her voice is tired or raspy. STUNNING performance!!!!!!

her raspy soulful voice
Patti the only one standing up… talent recognizes talent
That run in 1:50 - 1:54 cannot ever be duplicated
It's actually not that difficult, compared to some of her other melismas.
While the run may not be that complex (relatively speaking) her execution is what stands out i think.
That run was weak sorry lmfao
+Kit Mash I pretty sure singing the two decending legato runs (the ones with four notes) with that speed and fluidity while maintaining perfect pitch is really difficult. (I would know I tried)
It would be even more difficult to do it perfectly like she did
