I had the same issue. The QB5 was not properly soldered there either.
You know what is insane? That the algorithm gave me your video in the feed right after I bought a Thinkpad E16 gen1. :D
Do you remeber when i said about this fault on your sunday live video? It was last year, few months ago. The problem comes from tps65994ad.
Let the laptop few minutes and check how hot becomes on that area because of the mosfet - does not get the voltage on the gate to fully open.
Can confirm this.
Not recommencded, but proper workaround that will stay 100% functional and safe is to jumper the second fet and put a diode on this first fet (schottky 5-10A)
Good work
Love your videos
Greetings from Egypt
"we have the picture 🤷♀. i can't belive" 😂😂
Waoww, in my case, it wasn't off ,I just reflowed the same mosfet ,laptop up running fine ,
Merchandise just thrown together now' i liked the old days when circuts was hand wired , some were a piece of art .....
Amazing, loved it. I enjoyed following your analysis and deductions, you were like a detective, and then you peel the tape off and it is like the criminal left their calling card!
I hope you enjoyed your payment of two USB-C connectors :)
Hello Sorin, once again you surprise us with your wisdom and professionalism. It is incredible that equipment of that level has poor quality in the welding of its equipment as is latent in your video. Like always, thank you.
equipment of that level by lenovo is not that level, it just appears to be.
The blown up capacitor is a 0.1U_25V_K_X5R_0201 and the missing one at the position over it is a 10P_25V_D_NPO_0201
Thanks, now we know which capacitors to NOT replace.
No capacitor, no problem! There is still one other large on in place on the charging port which is more than adequate so no need to replace.
@@retrocomputinggrotto doesnt that depend on the circuit? it coukd be balancing some other section of the circuit based on the effect of those little caps.
How do you know this? Trying to fix my old motherboard.
@@SpaghettiEnterprises Schematics
13:00 This happened when i ordered first time msata SSD from china it didn't work.. i thought take a look and when i peeled sticker off one capacitor came off.. i soldered it back on and it worked again!
Maybe some employee wanted make a prank or was fed up that moment and did what did and called "done". :p
Exact same issue on the E15 i just found in a dumpster :P thx
No capacitor = No burned capacitor 🤣😂
That's crazy!!! Factory didn't affix the mosfet properly....
it would be nice to have that thingy for showing power draw but for barrel jacks not just for usb-c
Mr. Sorin, this is just crazy! I swear, this is like the 3rd time I see the same Lenovo laptop with the exact same fault, the exact same MOSFET.
Seems like Lenovo is doing this deliberately.
I had the same pb ,.QB6 didn't making contact somewhere. Resolded and working fine. I did this 3 times .. But now an another time ( 4 ) i have 26v on mosfet , i suppose that IC TPS65994 is too bad to work . No charging
Most likely the Mosfet lifted off from the solder pad/s because there was a dry solder joint/s, that will most likely explain why the laptop isn't powering on too.
or knowing lenovo they press fitted it using the tape so you cant repair at home.
most likely lenovo press fitted it using the tape stop you repairing it at home. been there with them before. had a full tower pc, psu died, no replacement would work. turns out they switched all the cables around with a custom wired atx 24pin, for which at the time there was no replacements for.
whole tower pc down the drain. couldnt even use the ram etc in other boards, total replacement.
No, teh ic that drives it failed and overheated teh fet by half turning it on. The fet was sodlered properly, this is a known fault of this board.
Jsut before you did your charging trick the battery was charging with 2A
i just got one exact same issue the fet was not soldered properly this is manufacturing fault
it happened to me with this same model, so i guess no quality control on Lenovo
it was the same mosfet ahaha
+1 same here, had to reflow those mosfets... incredible
I have the same issue. Failed C-type connecter
Awesome Video
sorry to disagree, the reason why that mosfet went out, was its generating too much heat, like about 50+ degrees, after putting that mosfet back, it generates lots of heat, i install thermal paste and a pad, not sure if that will last, or the mosfet needs to be replaced with a better heat resistant mosfet.
Great video, learn something new every time I watch these. Thank you Sorin for your continued efforts to support the repair community through your lessons.
24:17 that was a comment on recent acer nitro 5 video 😂
Great video! The new motherboard generation components aren't soldered, they're glued 🤣🤣
Nice sorin😂 it's working my favorite
Good Day, tell please what model of microscope do you use and what could advise? Thank you!
you need the replace TPS65994. If it's not changed, this malfunction will happen again.
yes. good video but no one mentioned that the mosfet was desoldered through normal use because the cooling from the motherboard itself is probably not the best at that point. It often happens when components are under a lot of stress and don't have enough cooling that they solder themselves out, slip or the flux is boiled out of the solder and the solder joint becomes brittle so it's important to use X Grade Rosin Liquid Flux underneath.
Got the same issue today as well, might be soldered with super glue 😂
Just had the same,.QB6 had rotated so not making contact somewhere. Resolded and working fine. Very dodgy design
So does the PD controller need to be changed for this not to happen again?
My theory is that somehow that Mosfet didn't get enough heat when it was being soldered in place at the factory, those solder pads did look to me like typical dry solder joints.
What USB meter are you using in the video?
Good evening.. I am very happy with this wonderful, brilliant content and the growth of sharing with you.
Hi Sorin, once I fixed some power-supplies for some avionics unit!!!! MOSFET’s was running so hot that they melted the solder. Their solution was to glue them down with lots of conformal coating!!! Turned out to be a design-fault, gate drive was too low, so the MOSFETs never entered their saturation-level.
ThinkPad E......every thinkpad enthusiast lust left the building lol
hello sir
i wanna know that i have lenovo ideapad 300 , can we change the normal keyboard and replace it with RGB one?
GOT THE SAME ISSUE :) Sorin, I just checked my database I had the exact same model, E15 Lenovo 11th gen on march 23th 2023, it has the same issue, it was barely touching the board very very very tricky as when I put my probe it was measuring right however when i stop measuring by removing the probe it does'nt make contact with the board. in my case it was the second mosfet starting from DC-IN!!! I described the issue as "2nd channel Mosfet badly factory soldered". When I found the fault I did a nice "I can't believe we have pictuuuuuure"
That's crazy..
So I have the AMD version of this laptop and it will charge no issues the problems I am having is, even while connected to the charger while in use the battery depletes rapidly with in hours. Im wondering if this might be similar issue...
23:25 Electronic give a finger, take the whole hand school.
Nice repair عالی بود ❤❤👍👍👍👍👍
❤We got Sticked😮
Sorin, the laptop i fixed with this problem has the same issue, i've changed that mosfet again and it's charging again :D
but i've noticed that mosfet is burning hot so i've changed the other on the side and still burning hot, i guess there is other thingy pushing to much of this mosfet right? maybe the mosfet controller?
If this continues working like that in a few months i've to change the mosfet again, any ideas?
PD controller is faulty and gives too low voltage to the gate, so the mosfet doesn't open fully and has high resistance and overheats. You can just replace it with a wire
Sorin the charging port Pirate 😀
Hi Sorin, that laptop will most likely come back. I had the EXACT same issue with this model. The first time i just resoldered the mosfet like you did and the laptop came back after a month with the same mosfet desoldered. After cheking with a thermal camera, that mosfet was getting over 200°C causing the solder to crack. At the time i just bypassed the mosfet with a wire, but now, i think the gate wasn't getting enough voltage and the mossfet wasn't opening properly.
😲😲😲
Check comment of
@SiETechNotebookReparatur , it seems it sorted it out!
That was a BAD idea, now your usbc port has 20V all the time and plugging in a phone or anything with a c c cable will not only fry the phone but maybe the laptop too if the pd ic tries to supply 5V too and shorts teh internal 5V to 20V. The right way is to replace the PD ic and fet, the hack way is to put a diode there.
@@pp3v42_g3h I only shorted one of the mossfets, so no, there won't be any voltages comming back. Also worst case cenario would be the battery voltage not 20V. Of course now i know that i need to replace the pd controller, but i didn't at the time.
Anyway, it has been more than a year and the customer hasnt complained.
I did like the diode idea though.
How much should this coat me if i take it to repair shop
3:42 HA HA HA! I will keep both charging ports! 3:)
The 2 biggest "lies" that I believed as a little kid. "Santa Claus is real" and "we're going to replace the capacitor in another video".
20:40 lol thats fkin funny. while u talk the current actually went up. no need for any tricks, just patience.
Lenovo was the best quality before ,after 2018 deep dive.
Incredible Lenovo quality 🤣
Here's a unique lenovo fault!
The pc will randomly stop booting, It'll power on, but nothing happens and every light gets stuck on
To fix it, you have to detach the keyboard wire, and the sub board wire. Wow.
Sorin, I have now replicated your repair in a video, just for you with my bad english :) please check.
That's just Lenovo increasing the repairability of their laptops. No need to de-solder components.
23:59 Press X to doubt
they ran out of solder so they put glue instead.. so pathatic design!
So. Technically, my e15 gen4 is a ticking timebomb
I have the same exact laptop and lol I’m thinking of investing in a different brand
Good job mate 👍
no caps no shorted caps 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dear sorin.Probably the mosfet will come off again. The PD controller is faulty, gives to low voltage to open the mosfets. They will open but with higher resistance and overheat
He has warranty.
Do you know where Lenovo keeps the hardware for the audio?
You get a lot of computer repair shop business - they can't fix it themselves - something is wrong but then you make more money that way
its lenovo, the cheap copy will be better quality 😂
but they probably swapped half the pins around.
What is this device you plug into that gives all these stats for the USB C?
Like a USB DMM pass through?
Lenovo quality control really went downhill on this , components stuck on the pealing cover.
Much of the assembly is done by robots. any faults should be found in QA testing. Most likely this is where Lenovo is weak.
6:45 am and I 'm watching this with cofee
No Capacitor, no shorted capacitor ! ha ha he
lenovo laptops are always with unique issues
24:09 "No capacitor, no shorted capacitor." 😂🤣👍
you are just the god of electronics! Keep up the good work. Im a big fan!
Got my hands on broken lenovo 15g2, looks like same kind of problem - not charging or powering up from PD port. Didn't have enough skills to diagnose, so just soldered wires with external 2-pin connector to battery output and made my own charging circuitry with constant-current/voltage regulator (set it to safe 12.3V 4A) with old 19V power supply from other notebook. Now i have free i7-1165g7 laptop which is faster than my desktop, lol. Thanks, lenovo, for using wrong schematics for charging. :)
Chuck Norris is nowhere to Sorin because Sorin can epilate a motherboard. 😀
awsome ! i wish i would have learned this profession - i could do this day and night - working on tech - i´, in IT - system admin - in my free time i did Overclocking Battles - was 3rd palce for 6 Month with 3Dmark03. Did a lot of CPU Mods with pencil and other stuff ( Athlons,...) ... i love to see you working - its releasing and valuable learnings are included - ok this was a long thank you - anyways :))
TL;DW?
ThinkPad is not thinking 😂😂😂
Keep them rolling Sorin!!!! Good work
have you ever fixed FUJITSU'S?IS THEIR BOARD;S GOOD??
AND THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO AND FOR ALL OF THEM OF COURSE
Factory lead free solder causes so many problems 💥👹
As for using SMD USB C sockets as charge ports.....Urrrrgghhh
it is very sad to say it but lenovo is most bad laptop for repair EVER :-( frst soldering is bad as see on movie.... also this glue under main chip ... almost unrepairable.
A wise man once said no capacitor, no shorted capacitor.
I had a similar thing with an older iPhone I think it might have been a 5 or 6 was a long time ago. When they had the little sticky foam around the connectors when I lifted the foam about 6 components came along with it.
Great job as always
No capacitor = no doggy capacitor!!! 😛😛😛😛😛👌👌
A better solution is to take a whole set of AC adaptor and a charging port from another dead llaptop. Not necessarily a Lenovo one. They all have a compartment in the case for the charging port nowadays. No matter what the plug is a circle or rectangle, you just solder internal wires and implant the port inside.
Thanks for keeping the Thinkpad alive!! Watching on my P73 and hopefully I never have to dig into it myself haha
Thank you Sorin, you are top
"sexy fuse"
MULTUMESC,
In sfarsit un raspuns logic.
9:48 PU4, That "Lenovo" chip very clearly bears the font of ' Nuvoton', I guess they made it for Lenovo?
Thank You Sorin
i sent you $ with paypal link you provided in description , wich is great for me , Big Thank You for your videos and for Helping US to Learn !!!
Wow! Really bad design/manufacture. Either not soldered or de-soldered by an excesive temperature, is a really bad design/manufacture.
Joke's on you, Sorin! I already removed the foil from my Thinkpad when I had to solder the SSD port back onto the motherboard 😂
Bad quality control
So in case of Lenove, always check under shield if something is popped.....
Rumor has it that in the dark web, there's video of Sorin replacing the capacitor.
good job, regards
