Winner in almost everything he's ever raced and generally considered one of the best race car drivers of our generation..... Gets remembered for crashing into a jet dryer
Montoya was one of the most talented open wheel drivers to climb behind the wheel. He was plagued with horrible luck his entire NASCAR career. Theresa Earnhardt or also known as the wicked witch of the south. She pulled out leaving Ganassi grossly under funded. I would've liked to see him in a power house organization to see if he could have been an above average driver or even better.
I remember staying awake until like 1 am just to see the end of the race. “Sleep can wait when the Daytona 500 isn’t over” is what i said that morning 😂
I remember staying up the entire time despite having to drive to school before 8 the next morning. Every time there would be a delay I would roll my eyes. I remember Kenneth winning as I was a Biffle fan and that finish is seared into memory.
I'll never forget that, the 2012 Daytona 500 had a rain delay, started Monday night, crash on lap 2, Montoya's incident with the jet dryer, flames burned the track, giving the track a bath, race ended on Tuesday morning, and Matt Kenseth winning the 500, and a couple days later, I gotta job. Talk about a memory I'll remember for years to come. Also, Twitter came onboard, and Danica Patrick's first Cup Series start.
I remember that night vividly, it was insane, my 12-year-old self trying to do my homework while watching the race. Never did get that math sheet done...
We had the race on in the firehouse and were just coming back from training when it happened. One of the craziest things I've ever seen. I hope it happens again!
I was there for this, I remember the panic from so many people once we saw the flames. Considering it was during a caution, so many people were caught off guard and didn’t understand why the track announcer was yelling about flames and Montoya until they displayed it on the screens inside the track. Was a long night, a long weekend, and a lot of drinking.
It wasn't just during caution, it was during a commercial on Fox as well. The first shot coming out of the commercial was the absolutely-destroyed flaming 42 car sitting in the infield with JPM slowly walking away from it, accompanied by Mike Joy's flabbergasted voice.
Man this makes me feel old at the ripe old age of 18. I had to go to bed that night because it got so late and I had school, it being a Monday night and all. My uncle was at that race. It got delayed just enough Monday so I could watch it after school so that was cool. Then the track caught fire. Knew right then it would be a moment we would never forget. And here we are talking about it for there nascar fans who don't remember and who probably weren't born yet when that happened. Crazy to think 10 years have passed since then.
I’ll always love this race who cant laugh years later at Juan hitting the jet dryer. At the time I was so pumped up for this race hours before , didnt have cable so we went to the neighbors house and everything , all set up and WHAM oh the tracks on fire.. oh this is gonna take hours. Great memory😅
I started watching NASCAR mainly at the 2013 Daytona 500. I think I was 5 back then. I would watch every single race. I stopped in 2018 when they introduced stage racing. I have been watching this year to see the new cars. And I always research history on old NASCAR. Jeff Gordon will forever be my favorite driver.
I was there for that one sitting out if 4. I could see everything. It rained so much and got delayed so many times we were calling it the 72hrs of Daytona.
I remember watching this live. I was 8 at the time. I find it amusing that you can still make out the section of track they had to repave going into turn 3.
Also, the free promotion that Tide got from this can’t be forgotten. Juan Pablo Montoya was just a passenger as his axle broke. On the pit stop just before that, the crew was checking the suspension.
I was a junior in high school at the time of that race and my parents were so awesome for me to stay up till the end on a school night. That race will be the one that will stick with me forever till I die. I will be telling that story to my friends for many years to come
I remember this. I was 12 and I was watching it and fell asleep on my bed then woke up mad because I assumed it was over but I looked at my tv and they were in the middle of cleaning it up.
I was sitting right at the super stretch. We waited so long for that race to happen lol. Standing outside miserably in the rain. I remember it like it was yesterday. The noise of the fireball was unbelievable, no camera got a good angle of the explosion. The whole crowd saw it including me.
I was 5 when this happens and I remember coming into the living room and seeing Juan go into the jet drier and asking my grandpa if Juan was okay over and over because I really loved the target design and was made that he crashed
I remember this well, was supposed to be at noon that Monday so I got all my school work done as I was homeschooled to watch the race, just to find out it got moved to 8pm😂 Jimmy Johnson wrecked on lap 2 also crossing the start finish
I remember going to bed and my dad yelled to come down stairs quick. So I came running down the stairs and he point to the tv and I just remember seeing the replay of the car sliding and then it disappeared for a second….. and then BOOM a ball of fire
I remember staying up til 1am or so til the race was over. This coming from a guy that calls out if a race is rained out on Sunday so much now that I don't even have to call my boss it's just a given at this point
Wow, 10 years already, time passes so quick. I know this was an accident caused by Montoya but does he still get any kind of penalty because of the time it took away from racing and of course the great damage it created to the track?
7:02 I will always think about this... Imagine being in that truck off to the left that had a PERFECT view of what happened. I bet that image is seared into their memory.
I was in 5th grade when I watched this race. I was allowed to stay up for the 500, but I was too tired to watch the conclusion of The Great American Race. (Y’all got the right to criticize me lol)
Heck no, an unfortunate moment for a legendary driver! I was 13 at the time, with this being one of the first races I ever saw in full. Despite growing up with a little Gran Turismo, lots of Hot Wheels, plus even some Sonic and Mario, it was around then I got truly hooked on racing more then ever.
I don’t want to brag but I was there in person at Daytona watching the race from the grandstand and all I seen was the fire ball under caution in the turn and I was shocked 😮
I make fun of NASCRAP for a lot of things, but I do have to admit, those new track drying trucks they have, as a result of this accident, are a great addition to all of racing. The new high pressure dryers are a big improvement over the jet dryers.
What did you think of the Fireball?
Crazy
Classic
I remember the orgasmic hair of Tony stewart
Horrifying!
Idk
Winner in almost everything he's ever raced and generally considered one of the best race car drivers of our generation.....
Gets remembered for crashing into a jet dryer
Yeah it's always sucked because he's a genuinely good race car driver in general winning in multiple top series.
It’s sad that a legendary race car driver like Montoya is for one reason and one reason only, and it’s not even his own fault. His car broke

@@craigroberson8757 honestly Montoya would have won in my opinion at least 3-4 more times maybe make a championship challenge he was just that good
Had the fastest average speed lap in F1 history until recently. JPM could drive pretty much anything at a professional level.
I remember staying awake until like 1 am just to see the end of the race.
“Sleep can wait when the Daytona 500 isn’t over” is what i said that morning 😂
Same here
I was 17 with a 7am class that morning but skipped school cus I stayed up to watch the end of the race
I was in Boston for vacation (from Chicago), and I was 11 so I did not watch the end sadly.
I remember staying up the entire time despite having to drive to school before 8 the next morning. Every time there would be a delay I would roll my eyes. I remember Kenneth winning as I was a Biffle fan and that finish is seared into memory.
Sucks that people will only know JPM as the jet dryer guy and not as one of the top 10 most accomplished modern racecar drivers of all time
Most know hes done more than run into the dryer
If I remember right, JPM's car had a rear end failure. Which lead to him losing control of the car.
Yeah, this one really did Juan dirty.
Agreed...
Most f1 fans dont even know jpm did this

"You kids don't know"
I was born in 2000 and remember this vividly. You gotta be born in like 2009 to not remember this
yep same also in 2000
@A. it’s because you were 5/6. Childhood amnesia
So you're 21/22?
It says "kids" ...you're not a kid.

The whole “you kids don’t understand the good old days” concept is precisely what’s killing this sport.
Exactly!! Whoever came up with this, needs to be fired.
I was going to make a comment about how pretty much everyone remembers or knows what they talk about on this segment.
Then don't watch it
@@CharlesB9496 that’s not my point at all
@@jadenadams8338 From a non-nascar fan pov, this was pretty interesting. Never knew about it.

I’m 15 and watched this live. Remember every minute of it
This is a great video! Brought back memories
I’m 13 and I saw this live and it’s one of the Daytona 500s that I remember the most
Feel bad for Montoya here. Few drivers can successfully race in different series and this will be his biggest NASCAR moment sadly.
I remember this. I was 12 and I was watching it and fell asleep on my bed then woke up mad because I assumed it was over but I looked at my tv and they were in the middle of cleaning it up.
"My name is Juan Pablo Montoya, and I am a retired Indycar driver and NASCAR Cup competitor."
"Oh, look! There's the jet dryer guy!"
I was only 7 but I remember this one clear as day and always talk about it :)
I watched this live, it was what made me start watching nascar
Can't believe it's been ten years already.
I was sitting right at the super stretch. We waited so long for that race to happen lol. Standing outside miserably in the rain. I remember it like it was yesterday. The noise of the fireball was unbelievable, no camera got a good angle of the explosion. The whole crowd saw it including me.
This was my first and one of the few I watched! This last weekend was great!
I remember seeing this on the new that morning. I was just in absolute shock from what i saw on the tv.
I didn’t watch NASCAR from 2011-2012 so I didn’t see this race live, but I found out about the Jet Dryer collision over four years ago.
I watched this live and a person who used to be a friend said "leave it to the foreigner to lite the whole track on fire"
I was in 2nd grade when this happened. It was a school night and I watched the whole thing. I remember it vividly
The time on this post I'm 23, and u do remember watching that race in TV back in 2012
Man that was 2012? I remember my dad calling me into the living room when that happened haha
I was 6 when this happened, and i still remember it like it was yesterday
I remember it here in Ireland because I was a Juan Pablo Montoya fan I got into NASCAR when he left F1 to go there.🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
If you catch the track on fire you career is over lol
I remember watching the 2012 Daytona 500 in grade 3, I can never forget the jet dryer crash 😆🔥
This has been engraved in my mind for the past 10 years
I was 8 when that 500 happened and I remember it like it was yesterday
Simpler times then. Miss those days sitting with dad watching nascar.
haha I remember this! "How many drivers does it take to stop the Daytona 500? Just Juan..."
Highlight of Montoya’s nascar career
I remember watching that when I was kid I was happy for some reason lol
I remember this clearly. Crazy crazy weekend
Postponed to monday, finished on tuesday
I stayed up the whole night watching this
I was 5 when this happens and I remember coming into the living room and seeing Juan go into the jet drier and asking my grandpa if Juan was okay over and over because I really loved the target design and was made that he crashed
Bob Pockrass is a blessing
this race was the first i cared about and it was a pretty good one to get into the sport with with all the craziness of this race
I remember watching this live on TV. I had to go to work early so i didn't get to see the finish, but that was a very interesting night
I still remember this. It was insane
Why is there just happy music in the background whilst talking about a flaming car?
I remember this, one of the wildest moments I’ve seen

They should have races through the fire so every lap it was like Days of Thunder and you get to yell "I'm through it Harry."

Pretty sure the rear end broke and locked up. As soon as that happened he was a passenger.
