This method works great and has been 100% successful for me.
I make it simple and fun. No fancy equipment needed and I have had complete success and I know you can too.
While my friend tried to root directly in soil and ended up with rotted cuttings each and every one of mine rooted and are now happy, healthy plants.
Come and try this method and see how fun propagating Schlumbergera can be.

My Christmas cactus cuttings have been in water for about 4 or 5 weeks and haven't even begun to root, so I'm going to try and root them in soil, wish me luck! Thanks for the helpful video
Great, give it a shot. I just rooted an old gnarly bit as a test, it took a long time but it has put out roots. I am so excited to see if it will continue to grow well.
Great information 👌👌👌👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks.
😊
Just osm flowers 👌👌👌
Thanks a lot
😊👍
When my cactus pieces break off I automatically repot them......making another plant!! Love when they are in bloom!!
I do too, they are such a bright spot in the house in November!
:chuckles: I wish I had seen this before I started in with experimenting with this myself :). I was clearly along the right lines but I was trying out the success rates with taking one, two or three 'lobes' as cuttings and whether having them in water or letting them callous over before planting in soil was the way to go.
Trial and error is how I find the best way for me, so I hear ya. This has been the most successful way I have found so far. I am testing now in perlite alone and see if it is any better but so far it hasn't impressed me.
I really like rooting leaf and stem cuttings in moist perlite/vermiculite (half + half mix), but I had none this year, so I successfully rooted my Schlumbergera cutting in moist African Violet potting soil. It’s growing, now, with 2 new pads! Time to pot it up!
Good to know. I am running a test with different mediums and some cuttings and the ones in the loose potting soil are not doing well but who knows they may come out of it. I also have some in perlite, they look okay so far.
Very good presentation! My daughter plans to propagate a Christmas Cactus a customer gave my wife last year.
I have found this method so much more successful than putting into soil to root. I am trying a test right now on putting the cuttings into soil and they don't look very good. The ones in the jar of rocks are doing great. I wish her great success, careful though, it can be addicting. :)
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Too late. She is firmly addicted to all things plant. The back house here (where she and my son-in-law life) is surrounded by a wide variety of things she has propagated.
Actually, I looked it up because she saw my wife's seriously overgrown plant, and noticed she had some window space opened up! LOL
I hear the same about trying to get them started in dirt. Water it is, eh?
@@williamstanley4960 LOL, she sounds like a kindred spirit.
When you take the clipping don't you have to let them sit out for the end to heal before placing in pot or in water to root?
Many people do claim that but I have never worried about it and they have done just fine. But if it makes you feel better go right ahead, it won't hurt.
I have a Christmas cactus it’s over 30 years old never been transplanted it is in a 8 inch pot should I transplant it or not it is huge
If it is doing well there is no reason to transplant. They seem to thrive on being root bound.
Do I have to wait until it stops blooming? I was hoping I could break a budded piece from my plant and give to my aunt so she can see the color it will be.
No you don't. Go ahead and give her a piece with a flower on it.
Do you change out the water ever so often? Or just add more water when it gets low?
Not usually as there is so little in the jar that it evaporates, I usually just put a bit more in there as needed.
How long it takes to root in water ? Good video. Thanks.👏👏
Just a few weeks in most cases, some of the hybrids can take a bit longer.
Thx👍
Any special kind of water? Tap/city water ok? Thanks
Nothing special, I just use my tap water which is city water.
How often should we change the water?
I don't change it, it evaporates and I just add more.
So what month of the year should I do the cuttings?
That depends on when yours bloom. Take cuttings right after the plant is done blooming but I actually take cuttings anytime I feel like it.
How do i know what colour my christmas cactus.
You will have to wait until it blooms, then you will know. Sorry, there is no shortcut for that.
Thank you for this video!! ✨ Would you recommend letting the cuttings callus over before putting it into the jar of water?
You can but I don't always do that.
Awesome demo ! Thank you for posting answered a lot of my questions 👍new subscriber !
i twist , i do not pinch
I do a bit of both, works great.
