The M5 really has been the saloon car to have for ever. It’s been such a benchmark car for all manufacturers!! It’s pricey, but I will take your word that you get what you pay for 👍🏻🇨🇦
BMW seat comfort is amazing, In my 68 plate M sport 3 series we are blown away. Took my family (eldest son at 6' 2" in the rears seats) on a 250 mile drive with one stop over 4 hours. We got out with everyone not needimg a stretch.Then jumped back in for another few miles. Contrast to the flexing, yoga etc on my old A4 :-)
7:14 to 7:22 great impression of Stan Laurel! Seriously though, another great video P. Tbh having recently been radar zapped in my XK I'm getting frightened to drive powerful cars these days. I know it's been done before but one day perhaps you could review some of the very LATEST speed camera/trap detectors? I don't condone speeding of course but with 20mph limits springing up almost everywhere it's getting hard to drive enjoyably at all, and in a refined car capable of very high speeds, at times it feels impossible to drive that slowly!
I remember being nervous of built in sat navs, someone told me they would be able to record your journeys for the last X amount of days, and would be able to be accessed by law enforcement to ascertain exactly where you were when you broke the speed limit, and by how much etc.and could be used against you in court. I know it was bunkum, but the possibility is there, some cars can and do record the top speed the vehicle reached, and it can be accessed by dealerships with their diagnostic equipment.
I've always driven like my pants are on fire, you just need to pick your moments. I've only got one SP60 in 30 years and that was in a Focus hire car on the M6. Then again my Mrs who drives the same seems to have been on more speed awareness courses than I can compute.
Enjoyed the video, thanks for the review. My M5C is 1 year old this week and after 10k miles I’m still loving it. I’ve averaged 23mpg and it can do 29-30mpg in a motorway dawdle. My only criticism is the ride is very firm which is fine most of the time but can be a pain at low speeds on bumpy town centre roads.
Thank you for an honest review. Of course if there were flaws or things you really didn’t like, you would say so. Many, many people give the high praise this car evidently deserves. It is certainly way up there with some of the best...
Great review. I have owned my M5 comp for 18 months and treasure it every day. I will drive it most likely for 10-15 years like my previous 335 convertible
I have a 2016 535 Msport and it’s a great car 1/2 the power, but no complaints at 51,000 miles. Plus I’m retired and use it for my livery part time business, my clients love it.
I purchased my 2020 M5 competition a month ago and definitely a great car, I do have a few niggles with it like the ridiculous brake dust on the rims, the squealing brakes , and maybe the fact it’s very similar to a 520d on looks , I wish they would have flaired the arches a bit more like the f80
Fully understood you. From the earlier launch of this thing, I've thought this is the best driving machine no comparison to other cars or super cars! We have to understand that BMW is not a car! it is not a super car! it is a sport car! it is all of them! it is not all of them! it is another category!!! I really believe it is the Ultimate Driving Machine!!! This is a new category of vehicle. This car set a new benchmark level.
Congrats 👍 Can you share a little more on your experience? Considering the jump from my M4 CP (especially now I have seen the new M4!). Just a little unsure about the size and the, dare I say, more grown-up looks.
@@PrinceBarin77 the performance is unreal, there is no comparison, albeit a lot more refined. You can drive it like an animal or sedate like you’re driving Miss Daisy, and the sound is a lot better being a V8. I know your thinking about it being more grown up, but you would not regret it.
this gets better gas mileage then my Acura RDX Turbo 4 cyl! i think it is ONE of the best cars ever made. BTW i love all your camera angles and set up. great video !
Great review, yes it’s a awesome car But in my age now I’m mostly into fun and not large expensive cars. Rather have two smaller ones with lots of FUN for less than one big car. 😎

My dream car. I had one in the exact same spec for 4 days as a courtesy car from BMW when they messed up my order for an X3 M40i. Totally ruined my new car when I actually got it because the M5 was so good and ridiculously fast! Live in the Peak District, and enjoyed every minute of driving it........

All 5 Series BMW are brilliant cars, even without looking at an M5 but I preferred my old 3 Series and had 3 of them in different spec's but now my Fiesta Active does me fine.

I tried them both - M5 and M5 comp. For me there was no doubt - the non-comp version is the perfect way to go. Its got only ever-so-slightly less power, but the smoother ride more than makes up for it. Just think of it - as a 5-seater, the main purpose of this thing is having the joy of driving a supercar while also using it as a family car and pretty much everything else. And thats before you look at the $$$! I've had my base M5 for over a year now, and its been in comfort suspension 'most all the time. I've played a lot with the setup, and usually run in sports or sports plus drivetrain, and often in MDM dynamic (reduced traction control) modes.
Don't yap shit, you only saying this as you could not afford the xtra £, sss for the competition 🤣. I got the M3 competition, far better than the standard in every way

I always think the newer M5's appear a little understated. You can easily miss them on the road and I am appreciate that is part of the appeal of them for some people. Not sure how these things are so thirsty, the Mercedes 6.2l in my old C63 had similar economy with a soundtrack that is simply epic. Great car though.

I have an F10 M5, totally get what you mean. 4wd must be a god send, love driving the F10, you really learn throttle control, but an epic drive.. 12.3mpg, haha worth every penny. You don't buy a car like this to watch the fuel gauge, this is slightly less than super car running cost piece of kit, when one of these goes to the garage with a problem, it can be a 1k - 10k problem if it's out of warranty. But worth every penny if you have kids, would love a Porsche 911, found myself looking at Panamera's for the kids bought an M5 F10, amazing piece of kit.
Can’t quite stretch to this but have the 540i xDrive version and it’s a fantastic do it all car. I can only imagine the extra performance of the full fat m5 comp.
I just can't live with th tradj7c mpgs, I have a 535d msport. Best of both worlds in effect. 46mpg if your steady and 5.5sec to 60. Very impressed with that
Great video,I had a f10 m5 comp pack and now I hav an e63s 2018 , I drove the f90 comp and it is fantastic but to b honest in a straight line I can’t notice any difference to the e63 s but in every other performance way it’s far superior
Stunning machine , Peter! Only just caught this review which much have slipped past me somehow when you released it. I had a 1993 K-plate Ford Granada Scorpio 24v between 1998 and 2000, which did (at best!) 18-20mpg. She had a stainless steel exhaust on and sounded superb. This reminds me of that car. When in a built-up area, the windows were down just to hear that V6 exhaust note, especially on kick-down. I do miss my V6’s but they could never deliver 58mpg which I get out of my little Swift hybrid. BMW M cars are something very special and this (to me) is the perfect car to take on a pan-European driving trip, away from the congestion, poor roadcraft and selfish arrogance of UK driving. UK driving standards (along with idiotic cyclists) are a favourite gripe of mine. Her indoors just rolls her eyes at me when I get into rant mode about them. So I’ll shut up about it. 10/10 for the review. And the car!
Absolutely amazing & epic car. Out of my price range, but I have just bought my newest dream daily driver, an M140i, and I think it might just be a future classic.

Very professional video Pete and a fantastic machine. I would like to know how many of these BMW target to sell in a year. 600bhp for a road car is just totally OTT. Surely the days of a V8 must be numbered.
I have to agree - it’s too fast for the road, if they made it with a better sounding NA V8 with about 400bhp it would be the better driver’s car for sure as you would be able to wring it’s neck through more than 3 gears - very frustrating. Awesome though and every journey you marvel at how connected the front end is and going round a corner even at normal speeds is a joy.
You know I’m a MINI AND EV nerd and I’ll accept it’s great but starting at £98k it’s a Car becoming out of its time. A demonstration of fantastic design and engineering in a landscape that is changing so quick.

The M5 is the ultimate sleeper car. And I agree its the best saloon car ever made. As for the RS6, well that gets smoked by the M5. Seen so many drags on RUclips.
Interesting; i've got an M5 Comp 2020 and my dashboard is different. Don't have the round dials as it's fully digital. Can confirm cleaning the rims takes easily an hour. As much as I love the car I'm not sure I wouldn't buy it again. It's mind blowing fast and so by far the best car I've owned, but it is a waste of machine here in the US. With so many cops around and its ludicrously easy ability to jump to high speeds, tickets loom at every touch of the pedal. On back country roads or long trips is where you can truly enjoy this car and open the engine / sound up. Positive note: The roof rack fits perfectly I must say and car looks even better with snowboards and mountain bikes up top.
What about the 2016 remaped rs6 you drove about a year or so ago? Dont you think the RS6 sounds so much better? I'm looking at next car and contemplating m5 or RS6?
Just discovered this video, not sure why I missed it. I have to say the M5 Competition is a spectacular car in almost every way - mine if just over a year old and I can't fault anything... other than fuel usage!! Happy that it takes just £65 right now to fill up rather than £95, but sub 300 mile range on that is a killer :) M2 Comp and M5 Comp are ideal partners so if you ever want to swap for the weekend @Joe Achilles - just say the word!
OK here's a challenge the M5 against a Porsche Panamera 4S ehybrid sport torismo, daily 8miles round trip to office, longer drives to Belgium (the not in current climate) adding fuel, service costs, tyres, and monthly loan(via your recommended 4cprestige) which one should I look to get as my new daily, replacing my 640D Msport gran coupe?? Looking to buy either around 2year old model as sport turismo came out late 2017 early 2018!! What do you think mate? Oh and great M5 comp review, oh and how comfortable was it, I thought the m840D was actually not as comfy as I hoped, though the porsche Panamera was very comfy!!
I think there's only three or so other cars that can equal the M5. They are the Mercedes Benz E63s and the Audi pairing of RS6 and RS7. All are biblically epic in their power and performance and all can transport 4 adults across a continent in comfort and with their clobber too. :-))... And the things I like about all these cars, for me anyway, they're all 4wd and all are auto's too. I'm at the age when I'm bored with a manual gearbox on roads and the autos nowadays just do it for me. It's tedious for me to be stuck in traffic having to constantly use the clutch. In out. In out. Something that younger readers (i.e. Those in their 20's!) will only really appreciate when their ages are well north of 50 as I am. But sadly, for those younger drivers, when they do get to 50 and beyond, the great dinosaur powered cars of today may be very sparse, if at all available. :-((... Great video Pete. Love the M5. My dad had the last m5 touring they made. The e60 think it was actually e61 in touring form. Im amazed they don't make an M estate. I think they would be very popular
I had one for 24hr test last year. Amazing machine, so much grip and power it would beat my 991.2 C4 GTS up my favourite twisty b road. I was blown away. Much better drive than my old M4. Very thirsty though
I am on my 3rd 5-series, not an "M", but a 5'er nonetheless. I have always dreamed of owning an M5, but after driving the C8 corvette with a dual-clutch automatic, that is were it's at! I would guess the next-gen BMW Competition will sport the dual-clutch transmission - like nothing I've ever experienced.
Truly a fantastic piece of engineering and has always set the bar for the full size performance sedan. But i feel the E63 AMG S might outshine it. I might be a little biased though as i own a W212 E63 amg. It's all about how a car makes you feel. Great video!

E63 is a rawer experience better suited to something smaller. The M5 can do comfort on longer journeys much better and is just as capable in the corners. The Merc is harder in the suspension department but the engine does sound a bit better.
munawar hussain I hav an e63s 2018 and I had the f10 m5 comp before, I drove the f90 comp and no difference in acceleration apart from the merc sounds better, but the m5 is better in every other way
The M5 is an awesome car, but Merc AMG GT sedans are bringing the heat to this market (more than the AMG E series cars). Do prefer this gauge cluster than the new TFTs.

It's legendary from back in the day. I don't know how they kept the M5 the best from the rest up till this day.

I had a 1993 K-plate Ford Granada Scorpio 24v between 1998 and 2000, which did (at best!) 18-20mpg. She had a stainless steel exhaust on and sounded superb. This reminds me of that car. When in a built-up area, the windows were down just to hear that V6 exhaust note, especially on kick-down. I do miss my V6’s but they could never deliver 58mpg which I get out of my little Swift hybrid.
BMW M cars are something very special and this (to me) is the perfect car to take on a pan-European driving trip, away from the congestion, poor roadcraft and selfish arrogance of UK driving.
UK driving standards (along with idiotic cyclists) are a favourite gripe of mine. Her indoors just rolls her eyes at me when I get into rant mode about them. So I’ll shut up about it.

I have to agree - it’s too fast for the road, if they made it with a better sounding NA V8 with about 400bhp it would be the better driver’s car for sure as you would be able to wring it’s neck through more than 3 gears - very frustrating. Awesome though and every journey you marvel at how connected the front end is and going round a corner even at normal speeds is a joy.

My absolute dream car
The M5 is the ultimate sleeper car. And I agree its the best saloon car ever made. As for the RS6, well that gets smoked by the M5. Seen so many drags on RUclips.
Interesting; i've got an M5 Comp 2020 and my dashboard is different. Don't have the round dials as it's fully digital. Can confirm cleaning the rims takes easily an hour. As much as I love the car I'm not sure I wouldn't buy it again. It's mind blowing fast and so by far the best car I've owned, but it is a waste of machine here in the US. With so many cops around and its ludicrously easy ability to jump to high speeds, tickets loom at every touch of the pedal. On back country roads or long trips is where you can truly enjoy this car and open the engine / sound up. Positive note: The roof rack fits perfectly I must say and car looks even better with snowboards and mountain bikes up top.

I have to say the M5 Competition is a spectacular car in almost every way - mine if just over a year old and I can't fault anything... other than fuel usage!! Happy that it takes just £65 right now to fill up rather than £95, but sub 300 mile range on that is a killer :)
M2 Comp and M5 Comp are ideal partners so if you ever want to swap for the weekend @Joe Achilles - just say the word!

OK here's a challenge the M5 against a Porsche Panamera 4S ehybrid sport torismo, daily 8miles round trip to office, longer drives to Belgium (the not in current climate) adding fuel, service costs, tyres, and monthly loan(via your recommended 4cprestige) which one should I look to get as my new daily, replacing my 640D Msport gran coupe?? Looking to buy either around 2year old model as sport turismo came out late 2017 early 2018!! What do you think mate? Oh and great M5 comp review, oh and how comfortable was it, I thought the m840D was actually not as comfy as I hoped, though the porsche Panamera was very comfy!!

I think there's only three or so other cars that can equal the M5.
They are the Mercedes Benz E63s and the Audi pairing of RS6 and RS7.
All are biblically epic in their power and performance and all can transport 4 adults across a continent in comfort and with their clobber too. :-))...
And the things I like about all these cars, for me anyway, they're all 4wd and all are auto's too. I'm at the age when I'm bored with a manual gearbox on roads and the autos nowadays just do it for me. It's tedious for me to be stuck in traffic having to constantly use the clutch. In out. In out. Something that younger readers (i.e. Those in their 20's!) will only really appreciate when their ages are well north of 50 as I am.
But sadly, for those younger drivers, when they do get to 50 and beyond, the great dinosaur powered cars of today may be very sparse, if at all available. :-((...

My dad had the last m5 touring they made. The e60 think it was actually e61 in touring form. Im amazed they don't make an M estate. I think they would be very popular

I had one for 24hr test last year. Amazing machine, so much grip and power it would beat my 991.2 C4 GTS up my favourite twisty b road. I was blown away. Much better drive than my old M4. Very thirsty though
I am on my 3rd 5-series, not an "M", but a 5'er nonetheless. I have always dreamed of owning an M5, but after driving the C8 corvette with a dual-clutch automatic, that is were it's at! I would guess the next-gen BMW Competition will sport the dual-clutch transmission - like nothing I've ever experienced.
Truly a fantastic piece of engineering and has always set the bar for the full size performance sedan. But i feel the E63 AMG S might outshine it. I might be a little biased though as i own a W212 E63 amg. It's all about how a car makes you feel. Great video!

E63 is a rawer experience better suited to something smaller. The M5 can do comfort on longer journeys much better and is just as capable in the corners. The Merc is harder in the suspension department but the engine does sound a bit better.
munawar hussain I hav an e63s 2018 and I had the f10 m5 comp before, I drove the f90 comp and no difference in acceleration apart from the merc sounds better, but the m5 is better in every other way

The M5 is an awesome car, but Merc AMG GT sedans are bringing the heat to this market (more than the AMG E series cars). Do prefer this gauge cluster than the new TFTs.
