All the stars of today are so busy navel-gazing they wouldn't recognise real life if it came up and kicked them in the rear end! '
Amazing to see their friendship form here which would become legendary. It’s obvious Cilla adores Lily/Paul - she’s so released and unguarded with him.
I remember one episode when he had Bruce Willis and Bob Geldof on. Geldof spoke about the difficulties of his divorce and how it had effected his time with his kids. Willis had just gone through his own bitter divorce and was struck by how his own and Geldof's experience rhymed. Both men had divorced in similar circumstances. Their wives had had affairs and had left the marriage. They began talking together about their experiences, the pain of the end of their marriages and the injustice the legal system had made them go through as fathers. Both men seem to have completely forgotten they were on a chat show. Parkinson registered what was happening ,folded his arms, sat back and just let things flow.
I remember Parky saying there were only three guests where he knew he could sit back and just let them go without needing to prompt them much: Billy Connolly, Peter Kay and Paul O’Grady/Lily Savage. Not bad company! You can tell he’s properly laughing here too.
