when Askeladd doesn't take something seriously, he will swear it in the name of Odin however when he actually means something, he will swear it on the name of his ancestor, Artorius. In this case he didn't swear, but mentioned he is Lydia's son, later they will explain that.

i love how the show use little historic details like the swords, the engravings, the art or the clothes to give some clues and context, not so many people notices that, some eps ago askeladd was talking about the roman empire, and the boat man look to the askeladd's armor (roman) he immediately understood and took the task

to clear something up: Leif is actually not in Thorfinn's hometown in Iceland anymore. he's a trader, so he travels a lot, and he's been searching for Thorfinn throughout his travels. he noticed the slave kid because he's young (around Thorfinn's age) and blond, so he matches Thorfinn's general description. Leif is probably working with the assumption that a kid as young as Thorfinn was when he went missing, probably got kidnapped and sold into slavery. so that's probably the way that he's focused on trying to find Thorfinn so far.
also, I think it's interesting that you called Thorfinn out as being more of a "leader" compared to Canute, because my perception is the exact opposite. yes, Canute is meek, and his unfortunate position in the middle of all this politics means that he gets pushed around a lot by his circumstances. but Thorfinn has been manipulated into following Askeladd for most of his life. the way it works is: Askeladd insults Thorfinn's father for dying because he was naive, and insinuates that it's somewhat Thorfinn's fault for being weak enough to get held hostage, which forced Thors to bargain with his life. this compels Thorfinn to prove Askeladd wrong, but then Askeladd is free to set the standard that Thorfinn has to meet before he'll believe it.
Askeladd is constantly giving Thorfinn missions that are just ever so slightly too difficult to be achievable, like killing Thorkell. this way, Thorfinn will keep striving, but he'll never quite get there, by design. and if Thorfinn does manage to reach that high bar, like the "head with a helmet" mission, Askeladd knows exactly how to beat him down once they duel. and the duel is supposed to be Thorfinn's _reward._
Thorfinn is basically addicted to the way he thinks he'll feel, once Askeladd is dead. he's no better than the priest and his booze. it's like Askeladd said back in episode 8... everyone is a slave to something.
in that same episode, when Thorfinn is talking to that slave girl, he says that if he was a slave, he'd just kill his master and run away. but rather than sounding like Thorfinn can do whatever he wants, it makes Thorfinn sound like this is what he feels he has to do, before he'll deserve to be free. he hasn't beaten Askeladd yet, so he's trapped here, trying to measure up to that man's impossible standards, while Askeladd continues to move the goalpost. Thorfinn isn't a leader... he's ironically one of Askeladd's most dedicated followers. and Askeladd doesn't even need to string him along with actual _good_ rewards... instead, Askeladd sets up a string of repeated failures to shame him with. and Thorfinn has never really seen through this, because it started when he was too young to recognize how unfair it always was. the deck has always been stacked against him, but by now, these are the standards Thorfinn is used to. he's barely ever lived any other way.

I've got to give you some credit for noticing how Askeladd introduced himself as "Son of Lydia" instead of "Son of Olaf". Then I have to take that credit back for thinking that the little slave boy at the end was Thorfinn's sister. Ylva was twice that kids size and much older than him before the time jump, when Thorfinn was still tiny.
And then you named this whole video based on that mistake. 🤦🏾‍♂
