Do love how Dean (one of the best guitarist on the planet) says he will feel worse after watching another great guitarist is so awesome. Archspire is a technical marvel, chill.
I feel it. I dabble in some guitar, and the small hands are a blessing and a curse. Terrible stretches and bars, but nice little tips to articulate. My main instrument is the piano, though, and I unless your fingers are as thick as a bratwurst big hands have no downside. I can stretch 10 keys with unmanageable strain. 9 comfortably. Some people can do 11s or 12s, though without crazy strain. If you've ever watched IASIP, I sympathize with Charlie's creepy uncle with the big hand fetish.
And also with clean alt picking and perfectly timed sweeping motions. I love tosin but his shred is sloppy af and his sweeps are never in time. This dudes playing is like tosin but super dooper accurate
He's muting while doing a combo of economy picking and sweeping. There is a sweet spot of gain cuz if you have too much gain it won't be tight like that. Some compression is there for sure. I tried to economy pick after 40 years of classic rock and it's just too difficult for me to let go of the control and play all loosey goosey with my wrist and so I look at guys like this and go okay, that's cool. As long as it's musical and gives me a sense that it's crafted somehow.... then I think it's great. What I don't like is if it's technically super hard but sounds like you know what. Then who cares? Who wants to listen to garbage? This guy has super clean technique and is playing with an ear toward that Phrygian mode and it sounds cool.
My jaw dropped the first time I heard it, and I shared it with all musician friends right away. There is one thing that is very subtle, which I think helps with the perception about the attack being higher/more pronounced than it really is; there is a very high pitched clicking sound that he syncs almost every note to, which emphasizes the notes even more. I am not knocking his playing one bit, but it does contribute to his playing sounding more articulate. Again, not a criticism or even anything negative, just a comment. And hey, it's working as intended, it's super effective in bringing forward the phrasing in his playing.
Yeah this is something a bunch of the IG famous guitarists do for some reason, I'm not sure where that started, but it does make stuff sound much snappier.
Been following Spiro for a few years now, found him through Wes Hauch. The man has UNBELIEVABLY precised picking and technique, and to top it off, he makes it look effortless!
Yo Dean. I've been a fan since the beginning. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate everything that you are doing. You lesson videos have been incredibly helpful for showing this old dog new tricks.
I grew up in the 80's/early 90's. I remember the first time I heard Primus and thinking.. "this transcends music. this might not even BE music. IF this is music, it's music from the future." Exact.Same.Feeling. Thanks for the introduction
As a fellow guitarist I am of the belief that this is one of those sold their soul to the devils they speak of. He’s got the feely blues side too (dead give away)
04:2106:37 I can swear that progression in the Chorus and even part of the melody in the solo is straight from Bastion OST - Setting Sail, Coming Home (End Theme)
I’ve been playing guitar since 1990, and every Generation has consistently raised the bar to the point where it sounds like these guitarists are machines.
I looked him up but could not find much about him or his music. Looks like he was on a few Daath tracks. I saw a video put out by Jackson of him doing a playthrough. The social media era of guitars is so weird because you have players Iike this who, unless im totally missing something, don't do live gigs or play in bands.
I hear ya. It’s a lot easier these days to get discovered as a “content creator” on YT, IG, etc…so being a gigging musician isn’t really a prerequisite anymore. The dude’s playing is impressive, for sure, but the music/composition doesn’t do much for me personally.
Sounds like shutting off quantize and speeding up 240 bpm lol. I was a guitar god before RUclips. It’s devastating facing the music. I’m over 50 so I’m okay with three gears a pose to six. Absolutely enjoy watching this generation of musicians breaking boundaries. We started saying it’s all been done. And here we are. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸✅
Is this like newer generations discovering Nu Metal & making it their own, it's almost Post Dub Step/ Industrial which l know modern guitar is currently accessing - push it forward! ⏩⏩⏩
At 2:00 you did a sweep picking example. If you tuned in all 4ths like myself you could play that same sweep picking pattern on the next set of 5 strings, and the next set, and since you have an 8 string, one more set. Why only be mobile on one axis, the frets, when you can and should be able to move things across the strings themselves. I’ve demonstrated it countless times. Never understood why it didn’t catch on.
It's very impressive from a technical standpoint, and perhaps the piece is literally intended to be a display of technique for its own sake, but I would love to hear a meaningful _composition._ The melodic parts pointed at some real potential for just that. I'll have to check out more from him.
The Tosin selective picking sound is percolating. His tree will have many branches. Also why not grab a different axe if you need it for a particular thingy?
Oh also, just a side note. He produces everything himself, so not only is he insane on the instrument but also behind the ol Reaper (he doesn’t use reaper).
Dude, serves you right. Now you know how we felt hearing Archspire for the first time, mind Blown lol.
dude i was just thinking that, him being mesmerized reminded me of listening to bleed the future when it came out 😂
Yeah we need some people from other tech death bands, get them to try and learn Archspire lmao
Good one bro 😂😂😂

We need Brandon Ellis on the channel! 4 levels, an interview, something more than watching videos of him.
Dean dont know brandon like that. he only usually has friends on or people hes toured with it seems
He's already been on the channel 🤣 m.ruclips.net/video/0oFzg7Pdrsw/видео.html&pp=ygUXRGVhbiBsYW1iIGJyYW5kb24gZWxsaXM%3D

Boom, frens

To have all that ability and still rip expressive, melodic leads amidst the shred stuff is admirable. What a guy
Idk how to say this but its like he has a very intergenerational way of playing. Like a mix of new and old school stuff

i have a similar big guitar and big hands and still felt that
Hahah me too. I never saw Dean losing patience on something before. I'm also a tiny hands owner.. and i play bass. I feel him
Archspiro 🤘🏻
He said on IG that he soaks his calluses in rubbing alcohol to harden them up, which improves the transients when he's doing hammer ons from nowhere.
W T F
NAWWW WHAT
Tosin has even said that you have to hit hard enough to make it sound picked, so I believe it.
That’s the guitarist version of a criminal who burns off his fingerprints, to avoid getting caught.
It's like Tosin Abasi but less thumpy and more rakey. Also reminds me of Liquid Tension Experiment.
And also with clean alt picking and perfectly timed sweeping motions. I love tosin but his shred is sloppy af and his sweeps are never in time. This dudes playing is like tosin but super dooper accurate
@@beanzthumbz Calling Tosin's shred sloppy... what the fuck
Hmmm yeah it’s nothing like Abasi. Both are on another level but they sound nothing like each other

Dean lamb starring in: Tiny hands and this big fucking guitar. Coming to a theatre near you!
Very Animals as Leaders-esque. Insanely cool riffs and leads!

possible and would make sense. what if he adds in the room audio to the track to add to that rhythm he wants to bring forward?

Was it worth the money?
Surprised this is the first I'm hearing about him. Thanks for bringing a spotlight to this!
Dean: "What is happening?"
Nobody knows buddy, not even Spiro knows.
Spiro is the future
you too, my dude! 🤘
More like Spyro the dragon, dude is BADASS!
He's right now
hes not, that playing sounds like shit
this is the truth
This guys got the nuno's (bettencourt) percussive sound on guitar into extreme levels.
been waiting for this! hoping you get Spiro on for an interview
Spiro scares me with how good he is. Next level
That dude Spiro took the Adam Jones palm mute string sweep technique to a different level. This is an Adam Jones thing.
Granted his pick hand and fret hand were very meticulous. On point and so accurate
You nailed it, Dean!!! \m/

I wanna see Tosin and this guy on a track together, or even just Tosin trying to tackle some of these riffs 🙏😩
Seen archspire in Seattle. You blew my mind as a guitarist.
When you said “these damn tiny hands and this big guitar” I felt that 😂
The original Daath lead guitarist was a legend too, Emil Wersler.
As a fellow guitarist I am of the belief that this is one of those sold their soul to the devils they speak of. He’s got the feely blues side too (dead give away)
I'm going back to good ole back beat rock n roll. 😮

check out clayton king espana with spiro its so fkn nuts

Some of the clips he posts on Instagram are insane, crazy economy picking and legato runs

Interesting, I tuned my 8 to alternating 3rds DFACEGBD
Got some old All Shall Perish 'Awaken the Dreamers' vibes with those muted arpeggios.

Using a delay but when the notes he wants you to hear he plucks the string after the first one so the second one doesn’t delay.... old trick

Oh also, just a side note. He produces everything himself, so not only is he insane on the instrument but also behind the ol Reaper (he doesn’t use reaper).
“God damn it” damn do I know how that feels. lol
When I see you do these super percussive riffs you always have lead tone. This guy has like no gain and almost no decay on the reverb.
