@@Dan16673had never heard Fallujah till they opened for cattle decap last year n Scott blew my fuckin mind with the leads. Had to go buy two shirts coz they were so flawless and emotional
no seriously, he's dropping serious serious gold here. it makes me happy because ive looked at it this way for a while and thought it was weird its not more talked about
Scott is such a sweetheart as well, when fallujah played in switzerland this year, me and my friends waited outside the venue to get signatures of band members. scott stayed for a while and chatted with us it was so cool. such a kind and down to earth dude
I saw the Fallujah/Archspire show in Nanaimo BC years ago, Ollie sat on a couch next to me randomly during the Fallujah set. Super weird seeing bands at that venue where theres like lounging furniture to chill when you get really baked
Lol same thing happened to us at a Whitechapel show awhile back. They finished playing before Emmure came on and suddenly I was watching the set with all the dudes from Whitechapel. It felt surreal because I had never actually met a band in the flesh until that point.
@@Iceman_309 Thats awesome, I've seen archspire in my own little town of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island like 4 times or so now including once they played one night at a bar that I hosted a "jam" at during the day with some elderly musicians playing blues folky rock stuff. They were loading in early while we were jamming and I had my Archspire hoodie on while playing one of my White Jackson Rhoads guitars, I was hyped to watch them play that night and It probably ocnfused them during load in to see a metalhead dude with a pointy guitar jamming old classics with pretty much senior citizens while wearing their merch lol. Definitely have some good memories of past Archspire shows, they need to play the Island again, its been quite a long time.
@ C'mon maaaann! Haha, makes sense - especially since he showed Dean the difficulty of playing a alternate/double note with his fingers. Good observation, kind sir.
DUDE same lol. I got a jazz iii xl and i became a better player. I bought another pack from sheet happens but the only pack i could find was the black thicc boys that are good and the damn thinner ones that i dont like.
Bro that's the most used pick in today's metal😅 The weird is that i learned to play guitar with the small Jazz 3 for the first 3 years but when i changed to jazz 3 XL before one year i said to myself "why you did that to your playing for three years???" 😅😅😅 with XL i went for real to a next level, especially precision, tightness, stability, noise control, palm mute..with small one i was so noisy and sloppy because im 1.95 and my long fingers touch everything since almost swallow the whole pick
Saw Fallujah many years ago without ever really hearing them prior. Not only did they sound great, but Scott really stood out as one of the most unique guitarists I've seen and he sounded so damn good. Killer player
two seconds into this vid I had to grab my guitar. I have been working on pentatonic subs with my students , I am stoked to work on his modal approch to pentatonics and share it with my students. best vid yet Deaner!
Just what I wanted to comment! Also, they are from Andorra, which is small country which borders both Spain to the north and to the south France, right in the heart of the Pyrenees. I just visited the area, and it's incredibly beautiful.
Spiritual Migration was the album that sold me and I’ve been a massive fan ever since. They are incredible and I’m lucky to have actually met and talked to the boys several times over the years. Carlos is literally the sweetest dude ever. The fact that Dean doesn’t know them is a huge L ngl
Awesome of you to have him featured, he’s my favorite guitarist at the moment and doesn’t get nearly enough attention! My Spotify wrapped last year was literally just the Dreamless album because I’d been playing it nonstop. This year my wrapped still has Fallujah in the top 5, and before them it was pretty rare for me to ever want to repeat an album that much, I usually crave variety.
I remember meeting Mr. Carstairs with my best friend when Scott and I were both 18. Scott was super funny and nice, it was inspiring. Nowadays my best friend is in Arkaik, and Scott still shreds. It's amazing because Chris and Scott are both such good dudes, they deserve to have made it.
Such an incredible musician. I remember seeing Scott play at Java Jazz in Houston about 09 when they made the first album. Extremely talented, Dude has put in so much work and it shows.
15:12 Loving this part, I do this sort of thing writing riffage, but just now getting my toes in the water for writing/learning leads and solos and was feeling lost. This little bit kind of made everything click, bcuz I tend to think in intervals as well 😂 Great stuff per usual!! 🦾🦾🦾
I really enjoyed this little back and forth; I would love to see more stuff like this with more guitarists in the future. Maybe Kieth Merrow or Danial Bergström would be down? Regardless this was a great video Dean and would make a cool series.
his technique is truly impressive! and I particularly like his approach to modes by adding a note specific to each :O I will definitely work on my modes with this idea in mind, thank you a lot for the video!
Scott is an absolute machine, can learn any song and shredding style from Jason Becker to The Faceless and then improvising over synthwave and Djent. To me what makes him stand out is his tone and whammy usage. It’s very special when you can immediately tell who you’re hearing play🤘🏻🤘🏻
That’s how I learned modes! This was something Guthrie spoke about in some video on RUclips. If you know your major and minor pentatonic shapes, you got 5/7s of a mode there - just add the modal intervals and you’re good. Awesome advice!
That way of thinking of the modes actually made some sense to me. I've never really understood the concept of modes. Is there a chart that would show for example the minor modes and which note to play flat or sharp lol sorry I'm having hard time putting this into words.
Dean, just so you know, im pretty sure with the explosion of long length podcasts, most people would LOVE longer videos just like this. As in 1-2 hours+ When this one ended i was literally surprised and relatively upset😂 Please think of entertaining the idea of long format videos, espeically chill, lesson type ones like this with a guest Love your content🤘
Wow, that reminded me of that moment in computational chemistry where I got so completely and utterly lost, I did not understand a single thing anymore. Sounds nice though.
Very much reminds me of Eddie VH and Dr Know from Bad Brains as far as how drummer-thinking not only informs their rhythm playing but their melodic playing too.
Let's go Dean! Thanks for having me. Enjoy the cheat codes my friends !!
Dude the stuff with Fallujah is so smooth and alien sounding. It's badass!
Scott is one of the most unique and audibly recognizable players in metal.
and he can pull it off live perfectly.
100%
For sure underrated af
@@Dan16673had never heard Fallujah till they opened for cattle decap last year n Scott blew my fuckin mind with the leads. Had to go buy two shirts coz they were so flawless and emotional
That last bit of advice about learning pentatonic patterns and adding in one interval at a time to learn shape and flavor.. That’s gold.
no seriously, he's dropping serious serious gold here. it makes me happy because ive looked at it this way for a while and thought it was weird its not more talked about
Yep very good advice that’s what I did. Start with the pentatonic skeleton then add some spices
Yeah Scott's pretty good, I guess.
Lmao the official Fallujah account comment being so underrated is hilarious to me
He's alright for a rhythm guitarist.
😂
Scott's one of the few players that's really carved out his own sound in modern metal/shredding. Monster player.
He sounds like if Eddie Van Halen played in a tech death band. Love it.
Scott is such a sweetheart as well, when fallujah played in switzerland this year, me and my friends waited outside the venue to get signatures of band members. scott stayed for a while and chatted with us it was so cool. such a kind and down to earth dude

Never knew he played without a pick, that's crazy. Dude has an Eric Johnson kinda sound. Classy.
He does play with a pick. Just that one example was pickless but he had it tucked in his middle finger. Just an fyi not trying to be that guy.
@ C'mon maaaann! Haha, makes sense - especially since he showed Dean the difficulty of playing a alternate/double note with his fingers. Good observation, kind sir.
Used your code on my first Sheet Happens order. The Jazz III XL pick that was just floating around in the box is my new favourite pick lmao.

Scott is my favorite modern guitar player. Really cool interview!
Yoooo those tap harmonics he was hitting…that shit was DOPE!!

Goddamn it, Scott is such an amazing player! I just recently found Fallujiah and the unique guitars had me in an instant .
6:57 I literally just got that riff out of my head from that patreon livestream you did, and now it's back in there again.
3:07 That shit makes me instantly think of Fallujah and no other band will ever take that away, so that's pretty impressive.
it fucking KILLS me Dean doesn't know Persefone - Core is my favorite album of all time!
Aathma is amazing as well. Living Waves is forever seared into my brain.
@@SouthernCross_ yeah that is the only Persefone song I regularly listen to outside of Core hah. Paul is the GOAT

Great stuff. The best piece of advice I've incorporated into playing guitar is to think almost exclusively in intervals.
Hybrid and fingerstyle implementation is wild, good stuff!!! G L E A M
Idk why i never thought about modes in this way. This changes everything.
it makes me angry that scott is not more recognized, he's honestly one of my favorite lead guitarists of all time
Fallujah is so good live. Glad to have seen them a bunch.

7:42 is unbelievably sick🤤 please just repeat that over and over again for a verse or something in a song it’s so satisfying

Dude, good fucking job on getting some of THE best, yet MOST unrecognized guitar players alive! You keep my playing fresh! ❤
Shout out to Perséfone. They're from Andorra. I'm not a fan of their new era but Core and Shin ken are masterpieces
Dang the second you hear Scott you know it’s him!! So good
Scott’s massive in person definitely been learning a lot from him which ever way I can
dean my face looked the same as yours as Scott just yeeted completely unhinged licks.........can't wait for new material from the both of you!
I had the privilege of talking with Scott after a show here in the UK. Such a humble and wholesome dude. Fallujah absolutely rips live too. Much love.

OK, that pentatonic short-cut method was very clever!
Adding in the one interval to the pentatonic to help hear the mode better is a REALLY cool idea. I'm stealing it and giving it to students. Sweet!
Bro, you have to get on some Persefone. They're AMAZING.
Very interesting boiz!
Dude, those pinch harmonics Dean is doing at 8:25 acoustically are awesome and impressive!
Tonewood baybee
Worth listening until the end. The way he talked about practicing the pentatonic will change the way I practice.

Fallujah is so underrated and Scott is a truly incredible talent.

Love the Van Halen tap harmonics. Can definitely hear Eddie in Scott's lead playing.
Persefone is from Andorra

Scott is such a good dude. And he plays ridiculously well. Love watchin him on Twitch
Very progy; technical, but retains melody and fits in an old school rock/blues sound...Very cool.

great way to ingrain modes at the end there
Fallujah and Scott are amazing. I jammed The Flesh Prevails every day the year it came out
Scott is my favorite guitarist. man is insane.
The way he thinks of arpeggios while swapping out the fourth from the pentatonic and applying a mode-specific note is kind of how I approach it, too.
Scott is the goat
THE WIZARD!!!!!!!!!! best guitar player alive imo
I've never really listened into Fallujah much admittedly but I watch Scotts twitch stream pretty often. The dude is an absolute monster of a player.
Bubly! Ive got one right now, good stuff

Your guitar is freaking 🔥🔥🔥
Fallujah has been the shit since their first album, dude SINGS with his leads.
ayyye Persefone slaps. Never hear them mentioned.
Damn those licks around the 14:00 mark are very Petrucci like, very cool.
Scott is such a great dude. Cheers from Divinity in Calgary.
BTW, Persephone's new album is deadly!

the tech death gods reunited, world is collapsing 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
"They're from Andola or something" - it's Andorra, a tiny city state between France and Spain.
