I wish I could thank Verdi, for this his very best composition. What beauty and lovely interplay between the orchestra, the soloists and the choir. Reduced me to tears in so many places. To think that Christ earned it all. The music mirrors such a message when considered in this light. This has to be a standout recording.

You should thank Alessandro Manzoni and his famous novel 'The Betrothed', generally ranked among the masterpieces of world literature. Verdi was deeply moved by the tale about the inner transformation of an evil man and composed his requiem for the poet one year after Manzoni's death. I agree, it is unbelievably beautiful. However, read the novel, and you will understand. Good luck.

Beautiful. I pray all these words with more confidence in Christ's words. The soloists in "Have mercy" bring out the passion of these words. The bass Morris Robinson, whom I have never heard before has such a rich timbre. To see so many young men and women sing with such passion is beautiful, especially when you consider the message. Congratulations to Marin Alsop, the choir and the orchestra.

Wilson is a remarkable dramatic soprano. She can scale down her voice in dynamics without losing consistency. Lots of limpid elegance. She reminds me a bit of Caballe, only with more power and richness. And she barely has to open her mouth at times, it floats right on out.

Lots of things add up to make this a stand-out performance; the incredible vitality of the choir, the artistry of each of the personalities on stage, the drama of a period ensemble, and of course Marin's extreme ability to connect it all. I don't think I've heard a soprano of more transcendental beauty than from Tamara Wilson that night.

When I first heard this piece, many years ago, I was bowled over. Then I learned that it was dedicated to Alessandro Manzoni, a man of great importance to the Italian nation, through his book "The Betrothed". I decided that this man must have been something special if this requiem was anything to go by. He was, and his marvellous novel is one of the great unread masterpieces of European literature. I urge anyone who loves this music to give it a try.

This is by no means the best online. It is good. The basso is tremendous and I swear the soprano studied the piece with Leontyne Price! However, the chorus sounds extremely immature. I don't know why, since I've heard other young choral groups in the UK that didn't have the immature sound of this chorus. It's the most negative aspect of this performance. If you don't know what I mean, listen to any utube clip of the Libera me with von Karajan or Solti. The difference in the sound is obvious. Too bad. It was not necessary, and could have been overcome with proper preparation of the chorus. By the time they got to Alsop, it was too late.

This performance is actually one of the best I've heard, although somehow it kind of feels very 'british' to me. That's partly because of the insane rythmic precision, which I've almost never heard with this piece (even in the best performances) especially with such a large choir. Then the tempi choices, all slightly pushed more than usual. Then the period instruments in the orchestra. Then the 'polite', 'british' singing of the choir (is that NYCGB isn't it?), which stroke me, being more accustomed to the more operatic 'italian' style. This all sums up to an excellent, coherent, well conducted, 'british' performance, and that's why the only thing I kind of dislike here is the bass cast. Not questioning the awsomeness of the singer himself, but it's just the insane power, the overdramatic im-polite singing, the often imprecise diction, just don't fit *this* particular performance to me. Doesn't anyone think the same?
Oh by the way: the soprano solo in the Libera me totally killed me. AWESOME.

No, I don't think you make up a story about the performance and then criticize a singer for not fitting into your personal narrative.
The performance is not particularly "British." The conductor is from New York. The orchestral textures are transparent and the chorus is very young, which produces a shallow tone. Opera house choruses sound quite different, and not always better.
The microphones are too close to the soloists for comfort. That's not the way you hear singers in the hall. Their vocalism would seem less pressured and rough with more distance. But then the Albert Hall acoustics would become a problem.
The bass's intensity and power is a refreshing change from singers who have inadequate resources for Verdi and hold on for dear life. You don't hear Trovatore that often these days, and there's a reason for that. You wouldn't want to hear this tenor in "Di quella pira."
As for overall rhythmic precision and brisk tempi, that's not new. You are directed to a number of performances by Toscanini, Muti, etc. That is not the only way to conduct Verdi, but it is a firmly-rooted tradition and not at all insane.

Ok, maybe I didn't explain myself... I don't think I'm stuck with italian interpreters, which by the way I don't always like. I think I've heard this mass in any possible way, both live and recorded, and from many different conductors, including Bernstein, Karajan and so on. In almost all performances I've heard, everything is focused around drama: very dark colors of the orchestra, slightly slower tempi, opera-style choirs, and super-dramatic super-vibrato Verdi-style soloists. This is, I think, a well established tradition, and it's perfectly appropriate, since we're talking of Verdi, but it's not necessarily what I always like to hear. Particularly with soloist: I've happen to attend a live performance of the Requiem where, in an acappella part of the 4 soloists, their vibrato was so intense that I couldn't even hear the chords anymore. This performance instead struck me for the opposite reason: transparent sounds, young choir, not over-dramatic soloists, faster tempi, better rythmic precision, etc... that's why I called it "British", as an interpreting style. But then, from the first entrance of the Kyrie, I immediately got a feeling for that bass of being out of place. Particularly his bad diction bothered me. Bah, I guess probably that's only my problem ahahaha

I agree. And I really don't like the 'English' Latin, full of diphthongs (leeberahmay, dominay, mortay, etc). Please! Italian Latin all the way for Verdi.

Not British if you are referring to the choral tradition in cathedrals. Marin is very precise with rhythm always a legacy of NY Sao Paulo and conducting a bucket of stuff apart from Brahms Verdi etc. Swing, Brazilian, contemporary classical, show tunes etc

Good concert, but the vibrato of the bass guy (?) was a bit too much, and it was persistent.
I mean he's got a powerfull voice, but he always conceals it ib behind the vibrato.
I dont know, I'm a string player and I love vibrato, but when it's not used always.
