@@S1lv3rdo7 Well considering I marched in 86, no, they didn't teach me. It wasn't til 90 that I worked with BD instructors. Only one of which aged out in '86. Another was the legendary Jack Meehan. ScoJo was with SCV in 92.
That's so awesome. I never marched, but our HS line (99'-2003) really looked up to you guys, specifically after Blast had came out recently, then we dug back and inevitably discovered SCV 92...Thanks for being a beast drummer, you guys inspired our marching and playing
He and Nick Angelis marched together in the 1992 SCV battery. The most underrated battery in history. Won every caption at I&E except Tympani, and the judge changed the score on that sheet to put him second.
programmed wrong never even saw this but my point was that this was like 20 years ago and he still has the same mannerisms and such. Which change. But thanks for assuming I’m an idiot, unaware that this Jeff Queen video stars Jeff Queen 🙄
Yea that's back when the I&E crowd had a little more etiquette and was a little more respectable to the performers. Nowadays we just have a bunch of soccer hooligans in the crowd.
Thanks for (recording and) uploading this. It is great to be able to see a bit of his history. (I saw him on the London stage, and was curious about he developed as a percussionist.)
Individual and Ensemble competition. Drumcorps compete against eachother all summer, but on one day small groups and individual get the chance to go head to head. They usually writet and arrange their own stuff and it gives them a chance to show off a bit if they are top players.
@FleugenFlagen I'm not sure that is correct. There is no mention of that in Jeff's Bio from his website, plus, the 1993 DCI Snare Individual record shows him in 7th place, with a score of 93.50, with the affiliation of the Blue Knights.
Honestly, no offense to our drums (you can ask any player from my years 2012-15) the drums were the worst part of our program. Jeff also doesn’t teach at Carmel anymore, I’m pretty sure he and his wife, Rosie, retired.
I marched with a drum corp at the VFW Championships at John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia 1969. With all due respect with the great ability these young drummers have, they are spoiled. I never had my snare drum on a stand all my playing years. We always use drum slings to carry our marching drums. I have different criteria. These guys are getting away with murder. I'm not crazy about cavalar heads but that's a different story.
I tried out for Carolina Crown snare in 03. He was the new percussion tech. I made it to A line reserves by the time individual auditions came. I didn’t know what hybrid rudiments were, and he got really pissed bc he thought I was pranking him… then he realized I was just a high schooler that was ignorant that had pretty good chops but no knowledge and he facepalmed… Ive never been so emasculated in my life when he just had his face im his hand and pointed toward the door and told me to leave.
😮 omg bro. I am sorry that happened, I remember how big Corps was back then. I would've been absolutely gutted. I never auditioned for Corps after HS (99-2003), but that is straight up gut-wrenching of a story!
Don't worry bro, I know your pain. I was a talented high school player and my instructor hooked me up with the Glassmen center snare, Brian Blume at the time. I was training with him up until the auditions and thought I had a pretty good shot. I was completely outclassed. I wasn't even good enough to get picked for warm-ups. Then, during the single auditions, I waited in line. I played some exercises, they were okay. Then he said, "okay, now play something to impress me." I froze. I had no idea what he wanted me to play. I thought, "Do I freestyle? What do I do here? Oh shit he's waiting, play...play DITTY!" So I started playing ditty. And I realized I could get _through_ ditty, but I hadn't really _mastered_ ditty. And after a few measures, he just took his sticks and started playing right along with me. It was totally unexpected, and I botched it entirely. There were moments where I was just sitting there, while he played passages, and I'm trying to figure out what comes next and jump back in. So he ends ditty, and I'm totally fucking embarrassed. Everyone out there just heard me botch one of the most famous Blue Devils warm-ups of all time. I'm sure everyone in line knew how to play that one. I couldn't look anyone else in the eye after that. If I could go back in time I would have tried harder for a lower division corps just to march, but the experience humiliated me so much that I actually stopped playing drums until I aged out. I regret that. Cheers bro!
Listening to this I think Blast ripped off some parts of his solo. Either that, or this is a piece everyone knows and I look like a fool. Better yet, this might be the same guy?
Great composition and fantastic performance, of course. But I gotta say I really hate the high-pitched tuning and the way the batter heads are torqued up. Sounds OK in a line, but terrible as a solo instrument. Would sound waaay more musical if he would've just loosened the tension a bit.
I hate the sound of modern marching snare drums or, rather, I hate how high they are tuned. I'm sure the drums themselves are great, but why such a ridiculously high tuning? Sheesh!
I marched with both Nick Angelis and Jeff Queen at SCV in '92. Now THAT was a battery!!
BD 86 was better. You know, the guys that taught you I'm sure. Haha.

He went into the future and took the Blue Knights' drums from 2015
For real!
With hands that fast, Time travel could definitely be possible.
More like 2015 BK paid homage to that old Premier drum look. It was (is) iconic.
He's a queen amongst knights.
Haaaaaaaa..... I get it

Lol
Scott Williams I LOVED 92 SCV. I saw them 3 times. I loved that they started with "POOF" on the field. And their tenors were amazing!
25 years later and I'm completely blown away, especially with that ending!
Haha, his intro makes me laugh because that's exactly how he talks lol. I'm pretty fortunate to get to work with him
Jake Letts Of course that's how he talks. That's him. :/

He looks like Shawn Michaels from WWE in this video.lol
He's the showstopper.
Fuck the writing. Play the fucking song

That was insanely great!
You can hear how relaxed he is.
Yea that's back when the I&E crowd had a little more etiquette and was a little more respectable to the performers. Nowadays we just have a bunch of soccer hooligans in the crowd.
drksdofthmoon idiot
be right back, gotta wipe off my monitor
Objectively incredible.
When he does the super speed roll a 1:33, wow. Having known Jeff since the 90s. I still love this solo.
I wish Premier Marching drums were still played out there.
not if you had to carry them
cosmodrum1 or change a snare head.
@@ehess1492 yes I own a old hts premier it's alot of unnecessary work.

Still straight up legit years later!🔥🔥🔥💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
A CLOCK WORK DRUMMER ON YOU TUBE...THE COOLEST DRUMMING YOU NEVER HEARD! WAY TO GO JEFF!
@jsk8drummer Oh yeah. Canton Bluecoats, Velvet Knights, Santa Clara Vanguard and University of North Texas. Jeff was also an original member of BLAST!
This video is iconic
BK uniforms looked so dope
For people who want to know the difference between high tension and standard tension marching snare drums.
Man, I love the snare drum
3:58-4:13 makes me think of buddy rich
He talks just like this today. Jeff you never changed haha
This guy is going to be our new percussion head.

I was there!
you realize this is 1994, right?
fast singles!
Oh. My. God.
MY GOD! OLDIE BUT STILL A GOD DAMN GOODIE!
Insane chops
Me now realizing why Carmel wins every BOA tournament
Lol yep

You cannot deny jeff queens chops, even if he was in a "spoiled generation". He also played some incredible stuff on the mylar drum in this solo.

just noticed his ponytail
Awesome! :D
My bad the dark-ish blue snare sounds perfect.
Hi Jeff.
vanguard thats were he was at his best and when he had his best solo
Holy blaze !!
sick
@FleugenFlagen He did not march Star, Nick Angelis did
It's GOOD.

This piece of video needs to go in the snare drum archive to be kept forever. A mozart of his time. Sorry Jeff, I played it better. :-p
wow
That right hand trad tho!
4:00 :O
did he march anywhere besides BK?
you should be in a Metal Band
all those notes, and he almost loses it on the stick tosses
When did he march Bluecoats?
rikuantu 1989
those heads sound to metallic.
Sounds Like A Mac 11 When he drum
hes our percussion head now!? -___-

Drum Ape one of my techs did blast and also matched blue knights, there could be some overlap
Drum Ape Jeff queen was the lead snare drummer in blast
Yes, I thought this might be the case, the just seemed like the same person. Thanks for clarifying.
I wonder how these same judges would score keelan's solo. I'm seeing a bit of keelan's solo in here. Jeff would still score higher lol
1:18 WTFFFFFFF
haha pony boy the 80's and 90's ruled DCI

I would think that allowing some kids to perform in street clothes these days isn't helping things either.
That chick in the background looks bored lol

It has a mylar head. lol
Keep practicing son, your singles, doubles, flams are no where near Buddy Rich, Joe Morello perfection.
Tbh, I like this BK uniform much more than their current ones.
Update: Their 2018 uniforms are so bad that I’m now considering booing them in the lot.
“I don’t like how they look so I’m gonna boo them”
That’s not a very mature mindset
The blue snare has to much of a fat and dead sound, the black one sounds perfect.
I hate this solo. Ha!
The snare drum player has great skill, too bad the "snare drum" sounds like crap, no resonance at all.
