Older car manuals used to be 40 pages. My Toyota Highlander manual is about 760 pages. As an adult, I do not have enough hours left and the patience in my life to learn the intricacies of every freaking technical device that I own. I am becoming a machine in order to operate a machine. Always looking down, pushing buttons, reading manuals. I have one older car. It is so easy on the brain to operate. My 2015 Toyota Highlander just sits in the garage with 1500 miles on it. Oh yeah, my Entune radio just locked up again on my last trip. Time for a Entune software update. My Garmin needs an update. My P.C. needs 4 different updates. Just got a Galaxy notebook...which is updating the Android O.S. I have to study the Galaxy after owning Windows 7 which is way different. My cell phone needed an update. Then the cell phone update screwed up my phone address book. More wasted time. Forget the Satellite T.V. I just don't turn it on anymore. My digital camera? Forget about it. Life is slipping away. Time for the simple life.

newjerseybt getting old man.. I have all that an I set it to auto update.. I waste no time with my devices.. if anything I get more time
It's like a guy from back in the day complaining about how tractors are a pain in the ass you have to oil change buy gas.. maintenance.. no I have no time to be dilly dalling with this contraption when my bull can pull me across my farm all I have to do is feed him..
Or an old lady who can't figure out a sewing machine because to many buttons so she just goes by hand...

Completely agree. It's all over-engineered. My car isn't an 'entertainment system' or 'internet device'.

    • @jeffbrown8255
      @jeffbrown8255 6 лет назад

Agreed. This is an easy fix. Use standard software technology such as Apple Car or Android Auto. A benefit of this approach is that a ubiquitous technology is usually much more mature and intuitive making it easier for the user and significantly increasing the rate of success for each and every user attempt. That is the system is more likely to respond as expected the first time to the user's request. Toyota knows this. But they choose to reinvent the wheel at the user's expense. I believe this to be a mistake that wears on the user's patience and frustrations.

I own a 2017 Prius Three and in very disappointed in the navigation system. Voice recognition is only occasionally accurate. The navigation system does not work at all in the areas where I work in the Pocono Mountains of eastern PA, though my cell phone GPS works perfectly. But pairing my cell phone with the car to get phone and message features results in the etunes system silencing the phone. To use the phone for GPS navigation, I have to choose bluetooth as the sound source; then I cannot listen to any music from the radio or cd player. And when I cycle through audio sources with the steering wheel button, when it hits iheart radio the audio systems locks up in a loop searching for a nonexistent account; this loop continues even after the entire car is turned off and on again. When the sun hits the screen nothing can be seen at all. It would be hard to imagine a worse working product: a Geo positioning system for navigation that works great at the dealer site, but is non-functional 35 miles north in a 27k car when a 2 hundred phone works perfectly. I would love to tear it out and put an old fashioned radio in.

The navigation in my 2016 Avalon is hilariously pathetic.
It often tells me I have arrived at my destination when I have not.
Twice recently I was testing it to guide me to nearby places (1/2 mile away). that I very well knew how to get to. In both cases I was parked with the destination directly in front of me, with the destination marked on the screen. Both times it told me to make a u-turn and go the other way instead of just driving straight forward to go to the test destinations.
I could go on and on for hours about how stupid and how bad the Toyota Entune-Nav-Bluetooth system is.

I've had my 2016 Tundra limited for a little over a year. Toyota really missed the mark on this software. Its absolutely pathetic. The framerate is laggy, the gps is terribly outdated and the bluetooth connection is buggy to connect to every time. It will connect but at times I will have to go into bluetooth options and manually force connection. In appearance and performance it acts like an early 2000 unit or some cheap ebay knockoff of current software. Compared to my uncle's new F150 I am downright embarrassed to have an entertainment system in my car of such inferior quality, ESPECIALLY when my truck cost 15k more than his. I hope Toyota follows through on their earlier promise to adopt Ford's entertainment software. This thing is a joke.

what is the difference between entune navigation and scout gps link ?

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  8 лет назад

Entune navigation is integrated into the cars system so it can work anytime. For the Scout GPS link you have to rely on your phone. Also (I THINK) that with Scout a map never appears on the cars screen, only a turn by turn direction list.

How do you check your system to find out which version of Entune is running (on the car, not the phone)? How do you find out if your car needs a firmware update for Entune and who can perform such an update?

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  8 лет назад

+Ken Anderson Thanks for the comment. To check what version you have and to see if you need an update go to: Apps > setup > general > software update > update. This will tell you want version you are currently on a if you need a new version. You can update by connecting your smartphone to the car and having it use your data connection to download the update. Hope this helps!

    • @KenAnderson
      @KenAnderson 8 лет назад

Thanks for this. I was able to find this screen but was unable to get the "update software" button to work. It was present but always disabled. I tried connecting my phone (an iPhone 6) with a USB cable, via bluetooth, via both, but to no avail. A mandatory Entune update downloaded and installed when my phone was connected via bluetooth-only but that did nothing for the Entune software running on the car.

    • @KenAnderson
      @KenAnderson 8 лет назад

But, now, at least, I know what version of the software is on my car and I can use that information when talking to Toyota to see if it's the most recent version and, if not, whether they can update it for me. Right now I'm experiencing a crash with the entertainment portion of the software where it will freeze for five minutes and then reboot; work for a while and then freeze/reboot again.

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  8 лет назад +3

Navigation is not standard on regular Entune Audio. Some Toyota's are available with Entune Audio Plus which gets Scout GPS Link. This is basically navigation that runs from your connected smartphone (and costs $775). Entune Premium Audio has integrated navigation (and costs $1000 +). You can follow this link to see availability for specific Toyota models: www.toyota.com/entune/#! Hope that helps!

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  8 лет назад

+nationalist818 The app only needs to running. You can open it in the background and use your phone for other things. The Entune app just acts as the connection between the Pandora app on your phone and the one on the cars system.

+mike vasquez You only need to connect your Bluetooth one time and then it will automatically work every time you get into the car after that (so long as you leave the Bluetooth radio on on your phone). Even without Entune apps you can still use all music apps, you will just have to control them through your phone.

Scout GPS requires keeping data connection. All cellular carriers have holes in their
coverage. So how do you use Scout when
you go through one of these many holes for your carrier ? You download the map ahead of time. Problem ?
Scout GPS does not let you download maps for free. You have to play $ 5 a month - more than the
cost of dedicated NAV from any car manufacturer. Scout GPS just quit working. What good is that on a trip ? It locks up and quits working.
Toyota contact us sent me back through the dealer to
Southeast Toyota Services Group LLC. to special order NAV on 4 cylinder or
hybrid. Entune Premium embedded NAV on 2018 Camry 4 cylinder or hybrid can not
even be special ordered. They special
ordered my 2013 Camry XLE Hybrid but do not do that any longer 2018 Camry
Brochure states on the inside of the back cover underneath the 43 disclosures
that : “Toyota strives to build vehicles which match customer interest. If you prefer a vehicle with different options
check for current availability or the possibility of placing a special
order.” Do not lie and say you special
order or try to blame it on SET or the dealer.
TMS USA Inc. will not accept a special order.
Do you even know what TMS USA Inc. has taken away from me
? You have so denuded the 2018 Camry 4
cylinder and hybrid so as to render them useless in comparison with your just 6
cylinder when your competitors are providing telematics like this on their 4 cylinder
and hybrid option mid-size sedans. This
is too obvious what a huge mistake this is for TMS USA Inc. to have not special
ordered this for me when I brought this to your attention.
I do not want to tie up my cell phone connecting it via USB
and cellular provider data usage for Scout GPS which does not do these features
I have listed to you here. Just because
an app can run on a cell phone does not mean that it should instead of a
    dedicated NAV processor. This Camry
costs $ 40 thousand dollars. Why should
    I control it with a $ 99 cell phone ? A
$ 40 thousand dollar sedan should be controlled by dedicated processors onboard
not on an app on a $ 99 cell phone and the processors onboard all work together
and use HD data not cell data usage primarily.
If Toyota wants to buy Scout GPS and host it on a dedicated processor
    that would be fine.
Here is what I have with Entune Premium embedded NAV on
Camry 4 cylinder and Camry hybrid which I give up 2018 latest gen Camry because
Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. refuses to provide it as always before they did. Scout GPS requires $ 5 month to not show me
advertisements and uses cell phone data usage causing carrier to throttle speed
of apps every month. Individual Tire Pressures and Weather Map showing me rain
ice snow coming not a forecast were not available without Entune Premium before
and were HD radio not data usage of cell phone primarily. If I add head-up display option Driver Assist
2018 Camry with Entune Premium I can program to see there the street name of
the next intersection, can program the speed limit of the street I am on Canada
Mexico and U.S. to show up there, and I can program elapsed time gadget - all
on my windshield - not have to look over at some Scout GPS hosted on my cell
phone partially displayed on the head unit.
Only that head unit display does not do any of this I list with Scout
GPS. Also I would have to give up the 4
alternate routes with HD radio provided traffic reports or be forced to buy
just your 6 cylinder 2018 Camry which make up only 5 % of TMS sales of Camry. 5 %.
The other 95% of us are out in the cold.
I would give up the 41 and 39 mpg highway and the 51 mpg highway to have
just your 2018 Camry 6 cylinder as well.
I would be giving up the DCM automatic update of the NAV as well 4 miles
near where I am and end destination. All
this I have to give up to buy this poorly designed strategy now despite that I
make up 95 % of your sales of the Camry - that is anyone other than those
buying 6 cylinder Camry. Entune Premium
embedded NAV gives me 8.2 inch head unit display and it provides not 4.2 inch
    display between speedometer and RPM meter on the instrument panel but 7 inch;
but I can’t even get TMS USA Inc. to special order that despite having bought
11 previous Camry just exactly like this from you. So I know what I am giving up. I studied your 2018 Camry brochure. I studied your 2018 Camry Owner’s Manual and
I studied your 2018 Camry Navigation System Owner’s Manual (OM06125U.) Arbitrarily state buy a 6 cylinder to have
all this taken away from 4 cylinder and hybrid Camry owners 2018. Well have you studied these manuals I have to
know what I am giving up to do what you tell me I must buy a 6 cylinder ?
You should rename your 2018 Camry Navigation System Owner’s
Manual (OM06125U) as the 6 cylinder 2018 Camry option only manual. Silly me to think I could special order this
    to wake-up someone somewhere.
I can assure you since the 2018 Honda Accord does not even
come with a 6 cylinder option that therefore their 4 cylinder and hybrid option
do provide embedded NAV and that I will order my next 11 not Camry but
Accord. Your competitor Honda will get
my next 11 orders as it has EVERY feature of the 2018 Camry and adds traffic
sign recognition as well with a 6 inch head up display, adaptive cruise control
stop and go traffic with auto brake, turn signal on heated mirrors with bird’s
eye view cameras while driving or backing up, sonar auto braking, 8 inch
display infotainment head unit also providing Android Auto and iPhone
    CarPlay, wireless charger, LED lighting
package, auto high beam, cross traffic auto brake and alert system, 12-way
driver power seats with 4-way lumbar support adjustment, more trunk space, more
rear seat space, remote diagnostics, just touch cell phone to Accord to pair
it, and all with embedded NAV on Eco mode on hybrid and on 4 cylinder.
You have done exactly that which you said you did not want
and that is that the last thing TMS USA Inc. wants to have happen is for a
customer to have an experience that would turn them away from Toyota. You wasted my time and their time in addition
to your own time and should have simply said have fun in your new 2018 Honda
Accord 4 cylinder or hybrid with embedded NAV because Toyota refuses to even
special order you one despite 11 previous you have bought on 4 cylinder and
hybrid Camry with Premium Audio embedded NAV.
Order 6 cylinder give up mpg life of the vehicle or use cellular data
usage tying up your cell phone with inferior Scout GPS not fully integrated
dynamically with the other features of the 2018 Camry. That is what you should have said Toyota. 11
Camry in a row all 4 cylinder or Camry Hybrid with embedded Navigation and now
I have to buy an Accord to buy it 2018.
A quarter of a million U.S. vehicles every month, 20 million worldwide
annually, and a quarter of a trillion U.S. dollars revenue by 358 thousand
employees and you pull this Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. ? You should all be fired forthwith
obviously. You don’t know what you’re
doing frankly none of you. It must be nice
for you to think that you can pull this on me.
It should not have come to this.
Just wait until 95 % of the Camry owners find out that this is what they
gave up to have Scout GPS thinking they were getting NAV. No they are NOT.

Here is what I don’t like about 2018 Camry and it’s a deal
    breaker for me.
You don’t manage a 2018 automobile that costs 40 thousand
dollars with a 99 dollar cell phone.
Just because an app can run on a cell phone does not mean that it should
run there instead of a dedicated processor onboard. In this case of the 2018 Camry all come with
Scout GPS Link. Well that is a troubled
app that is not as well received in the marketplace as many others ahead of
it. Worse cell carriers have holes in
their coverage areas where it shows up on their map as white areas not covered
for data and every carrier has that.
Scout GPS Link does not let you download the map ahead of time before you
enter such an uncovered zone. Why don’t
they when everyone else with an app on your phone for GPS Navigation does ?
Well because they charge five dollars a month to be able to download maps yet
there you are with the problem all GPS Navigation apps face of these holes in
    cellular coverages for data.
Toyota thinks they can stonewall you on this after all if
you purchase the 2018 Camry with a 6 cylinder you can have their embedded
Navigation which works whenever there are holes in data because well Toyota
downloaded the NAV map onto your 2018 Camry.
In fact Toyota even updates your map when you get within 4 miles of an
area through a device Toyota calls DCM which comes on their Entune Premium
which is their embedded dynamic Navigation.
So Scout GPS Link just quits working. It locks up.
It stops operating. Do you get
    this ?
In addition if you want Scout GPS Link and do not want to
watch annoying advertisements while you are trying to use Scout GPS Link then
again you must pay them five dollars a month.
No car manufacturer charges five dollars a month for the life of the
vehicle for GPS Navigation and all their GPS Navigation systems work where
there is a hole in the coverage for data from your cellular carrier.
The app should not be run on a cell phone.
There are other security reasons and being hacked why not to
run an app on your 99 dollar cell phone that contains where you are and when
you will be there along with when you left.
All that is better suited for a dedicated onboard processor
    on your vehicle.
How many apps can you load on your cell phone ? There certainly are limits. And there are limits to the amount of data
your carrier is going to give to you in a month’s time before they put a govern
limit on your usage and slow your speed down of that app and all other apps on
not only your phone but possibly also the other users on your same account with
the carrier. They slow your data down
when you use it. Scout GPS Link not only
is 70 megabytes in size but it is a huge user of data on your cell phone
including those annoying advertisements if you want it free or pay them five
dollars a month to not have ads on your head unit infotainment system display.
As for HUD head up displays and other displays onboard on
your 2018 Camry or other new vehicles Scout GPS does not integrate with those
so this is even more reason to not buy into the concept that Toyota is
providing every Camry owner with navigation in 2018. No they are not.
I had to remove apps from my cell phone to load Scout GPS
Link because it is 70 megabytes. For all
these reasons Scout GPS got only 1 star from 455 of us who downloaded the junk
and another 130 of us gave it only 2 stars.
So of 1042 who downloaded it 585 - more than half of the 1042 downloads
    - scored this Scout GPS Link app 1 or 2 stars.
Entune Premium embedded NAV on 2018 Camry 4 cylinder or
hybrid can not even be special ordered.
The 2018 Camry Brochure states on the inside of the back
cover underneath the 43 disclosures that :
“Toyota strives to build vehicles which match customer
interest. If you prefer a vehicle with
different options check for current availability or the possibility of placing
a special order.” Do not lie and say you
special order or try to blame it on SET or the dealer.
Toyota’s dirty little secret about its 2018 Camry.
I do not want to tie up my cell phone connecting it via USB
and cellular provider data usage for Scout GPS which does not do these features
I have listed to you here. A 40 thousand
dollar sedan should be controlled by dedicated processors onboard not on an app
on a 99 dollar cell phone and the processors onboard all work together and use
HD data not cell data usage primarily.
If Toyota wants to buy Scout GPS and host it on a dedicated processor
that would be fine. Scout GPS Link is
not why I will pay Toyota 40 thousand dollars for this piece of junk strategy
where Toyota will not even sell me a car with NAV on any of their 4 cylinder or
    hybrid models.
Individual Tire Pressures and Weather Map showing me rain
ice snow coming not a forecast were not available without Entune Premium before
and Weather Map uses HD radio not data usage of cell phone primarily.
If I add head-up display option Driver Assist 2018 Camry
with Entune Premium I can program to see there the street name of the next
intersection, can program the speed limit of the street I am on Canada Mexico
and U.S. to show up there, and I can program elapsed time gadget - all on my
windshield - not have to look over at some Scout GPS hosted on my cell phone
partially displayed on the head unit.
Only that head unit display does not do any of this I list with Scout
    GPS.
Also I would have to give up the 4 alternate routes with HD
radio provided traffic reports or be forced to buy just your 6 cylinder 2018
Camry which make up only 5 % of TMS sales of Camry.
Entune Premium embedded NAV gives me 8.2 inch head unit
display not 7 inch standard. And it
provides not 4.2 inch display between speedometer and RPM meter on the
instrument panel but 7 inch; but I can’t even get TMS USA Inc. to special order
that despite having bought 11 previous Camry just exactly like this from
    you.
Toyota should have simply said have fun in your new 2018
Honda Accord 4 cylinder or hybrid with embedded NAV because Toyota refuses to
even special order you 4 cylinder and hybrid Camry with Premium Audio embedded
NAV. Order 6 cylinder give up mpg life
of the vehicle or use cellular data usage tying up your cell phone with
inferior Scout GPS not fully integrated dynamically with the other features of
    the 2018 Camry.
A quarter of a million U.S. vehicles every month, 20 million
worldwide annually, and a quarter of a trillion U.S. dollars revenue by 358
thousand employees and you pull this Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. ?

I had a 2009 Venza and the bluetooth audio system had a couple of minor, annoying bugs. I hoped when I got a new car things would improve.
Now I've got a 2016 Avalon with Bluetooth & Entune. The Bluetooth & Entune in this car are unmitigated junk. It''s packed with annoying bugs, and crashes & reboots all the damn time. Frequently the sound becomes unintelligible - until the next crash. Then it might work properly for an hour or two.
I could spend a week compiling a long list of bugs, crashes & stupid behaviors from this junk system. Toyota needs to stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just start providing CarPlay & Android Auto.
However I'll likely never see that because I'm so fed up with this crap system I'm likely going to sell this damn Toyota and buy something with CarPlay & Android Auto.

Thanks for your review! I currently own a '09 Venza and test drove a '17 Highlander today. I liked how well it drove but have heard nothing but terrible reviews on their infotainment system. Its funny because the salesman was telling me today on how much toyota spends a day on researching and developing their vehicle tech...hahaha
I also test drove the Pilot and maybe its worth going that direction instead.

A year ago on my honeymoon i rented a Kia Optima for a week. I really liked that car. Don't remember cursing the bluetooth-navigation system.
Still haven't taken any action on getting rid of my Avalon because I'm going for a home remodel loan.

So, even the cars with the integrated nav are terrible?
It seems the Entune and gps scout link are junk and to be avoided all together. I was considering either purchasing the xle, limited or limited platinum '17 Highlander.

Entune is the worst Bluetooth integration software ever! It is horrible! After a phone call, get ready for your music to blast you out of the car without warning. Because for some reason, Toyota thinks you want to hear your music after a phone call, even though you had it paused before you took the phone call.
Why they think they can make a better interface than Apple CarPlay in the Google android software, I have no clue!
Because of this Bluetooth system being so horrible, and how important it is to stay connected while on the road for me and my girlfriend, Toyota, specifically it's Lexus brand, lost two sales to Audi because we absolutely could not stand the Bluetooth system, even though we like the Lexus design better.
