I disagree. The Waveguide is supposed to improve dispersion. The regular E5's have a two dimensional sweet spot which moves the soundstage far in front of the listener. The waveguide, IMO, in this demo at least, helps smooth the tweeter a bit and expand the range of the sweet spot. "Deep" is a perfect example of this. It's about $40 difference between the two, currently. I'll be going for the XT.

While these comparisons are interesting, you must remember that just because it is compared on here, is NOT going to be an actual reflection of how it is going to sound in your room. How big is your room? Is your room treated? I have the E5 XT (with the Tremblor 8" sub) and I prefer them to the E3.5 and E5 I also own in different rooms. My E5 XT sound NOTHING like they do in this comparison. Still fun to compare them like this, yet this is limited by the mic and recording setup.

Presonus E5 XT has a bit more high end and The E5 is more balanced. But the XT has wider soundstage due to its design where the Twitter is placed. The hi hats sound very metalic and harsh on the XT
The regular E5 would sound great with an added subwoofer.

  • @testowykana1763

Hard to say by listening to a recorded monitor sound, but in my opinion, E5 XT has better separation/shows more "contrast" in the amount of mid-high frequencies. What I mean by that: on E5 XT what has sound is sounds dark, and what is bright, sounds bright, just as it should. On E5 a lot of stuff seems to be "blended" together: flute + shaker seem to have similar tonality (amount of high mids), while on E5 there is a contrast between the flute and shaker: flute is noticeably darker and shaker is brighter. Sounds more similar to the source track.
To compare it with another set of monitors: Yamaha HS80 vs MSP5 monitors: on HS80s has it's own very noticable sound signature, high mid frequencies all sound more or less harsh, there is no contrast between instruments, while MSP5 monitors show this difference much much better: what is dark sounds dark, and what is bright sounds bright.

Exactly what expected, right between the 4.5 and the XT lie the E5. With the same driver, the bigger box of the XT sounds looser, muddier bass, E5 sounds tighter, punchier.

  • @quananginh9446

E5 wins. The E5 sounds fuller and stereo image is good. The E5 XT sounds like its a bit out of phase and thin. The highs on both are harsh or maybe it's just my headphones.

  • @jordybanzoulou1193

Thanks for this comparison, very helpful.
I think the best way to listen the difference is to use a Close Back headphone, in a quiet place (I'm Using a Audio Technica ATH M50X).
I think also that the one that have the more natural or close to the Original Track is The OLD ONE, The Eris E5, even shown in the frequency response the Eris E5 is close to be more flat. When editing it is better to choice the one is more flat than the one is coloured. There is no big difference but the XT is (slightly) coloured.
Hope you feel the same thing.

  • @iandotson1708
    @iandotson1708 4 года назад +34

The main difference seems like the XT is more immersive with clear highs and more sub bass and the frequencies are better separated for mixing, but the E5 has a bit of a warmer, more centered sound with more mids; maybe the XT is better for mixing, and the E5 for casual playback. They both seem super solid in their own way, for different preferences and uses

Just got the E5 XT and can only compare to the more hi-fi geared edifier R1850DB. Worlds of a difference in treble extention, soundstage and bass tightness/positioning. The waveguide appears to help with dispersion horizontally with a wider sweetspot but again don't thave the E5 for a direct comparison. More importantly, the XT seems to have a noticeably boxy midrange that is rather unpleasant. I found it most obvious during the Classical sample, but its there in some of the others as well. @@TheNesta82 I'll share a little story with you that might help with your buying decision. I initially ordered the original eris 5's off of ebay, thinking I was getting a great deal on a pair of them. Turns out the seller only sent one, so I immediately started the return process to get my money back. I figured I'd try the 1 speaker out to see what it sounds like, and I was impressed, it sounded great. Then I sent it back and started looking for a new set, and found the newer XT's on amazon with stands for the same price as the original E5's. I figured I'll try out the new version, and if I don't like them, I'll just send them back and get the originals again, since I know already that they are good. Well, let's just say that the XT's are NOT going back! They sound absolutely amazing! I prefer the looks of the older model in pictures here on youtube, and I prefer the looks of the newer model in person. The XT's are a little bit bigger and reach down 5hz lower as well. I did roll back the high's a bit using the EQ on the back, and it made a huge difference. They are some of the best sounding speakers I've ever heard, absolutely love them. The other factor for me is that I didn't want to end up with an old pair of speakers. They come with a manufacturer sticker on the bottom that shows the date they were made. The original E5 that was sent from ebay was dated back to 2016. The newer XT's I got from amazon are dated 9/2020, so they are less than 6 months old. I don't know why, but I just feel more comfortable knowing something was made more recently. Since the XT's are fairly new (compared to the originals), you'll surely get something made more recently. They're both great though, you can't go wrong and you won't be disappointed with either. Hope this helps.

Listening on Krk kns 8400 headphones. E5 definitely sounds more boxy around the low mids. Its almost like the overlap between the woofer and tweeter makes the low mids loose pace and snappyness. Maybe it's just the design of the ports. The E5XT is overall more flawless, more open and more effortless than the E5. I had the E5 and as soon as I bought Yamaha hs5 I really noticed it! The HS5 sounds much more 3 dimensional, with faster transients and more open. Trouble is with HS5, my mixes translate well but always end up with slightly overblown lows. I imagine the XT is the best of both worlds..open and neutral but with a bit of warmth and a decent low end.

eris 5 still usable and sounds actually flatter but boxier, 5 xt is a higher quality product for sure, beautiful mids and slightler lower extension the e5 needed. I think its possible you get better mixing results with eris 5 not xt but the xt sounds a lot "nicer"

can you or someone else respond? I just swapped my e5s for the e5xts and have one week to decide if I want the 5s back or to keep the xt's. For me the difference after having them both is barely noticeable honestly and since you can roll off the high end, it makes more sense to get the xt's if they're the same price where you're buying them, at my local music shop the e5s and the 5xt's were the same price, I figured having if I can EQ the high end, and reduce it slightly to simulate the "flatter" e5's, it will allow me to get the best mix possible while having more enjoyable monitors, but honestly in real life the difference is hard to even tell. This microphone kind of exaggerates the difference it seems.

@@Sam-me5pl currently have the LP6 from Kali. Soundstage and range is fantastic but they are also displaying quite a bit of shelf noise which cannot be attenuated by reducing volume. You only notice this if you sit close. Bought the RP5 G4 beforehand but they lacked a good stereo image in my opinion and sounded compressed and veiled in the upper frequency range. The LP6 is a good compromise between the very bright and somewhat fatiguing treble of the Eris 5 xt with the added bonus of better bass extention. I will still give the Focal Alphas a go although they are overall in a higher price bracket.
