  • The fuel economy of the future is shifting from a dependence on fossil fuels and toward alternative pathways, such as energy-dense synthetic fuels. Recent advancements in the field of synthetic fuels for commercial applications offer promise, but, at this time, synthesis of energy-dense fuels of interest, such as ammonia, methanol, and gasoline, remain energetically costly and, therefore, not viable to deploy at the point of need. The Fuel Access Anywhere, Regardless of Means (FAARM) Advanced Research Concept (ARC) Opportunity solicits ideas to explore the following question: Can energy-dense fuels be synthesized using an efficient, small-scale system?
    The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is sponsoring a live webinar to provide information and promote technical exchange with potential proposers on the objectives of the FAARM ARC opportunity issued under the ARC Exploration Announcement (DARPA-EA‐24-01).
    The webinar will include an overview of DSO, the ARC initiative, and a FAARM-specific presentation. Registrants will have the opportunity to hear from experts in military logistics and advancements in fuels research and have the opportunity to ask questions. The webinar will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Registration is required for all webinar attendees. There is no in-person option for this event, and there is no fee for the webinar. To maximize the pool of innovative research concepts, DARPA strongly encourages participation in these events and subsequent solicitations by non‐traditional performers, including small businesses, academic and research institutions, and first‐time Government contractors.

    I think this concept has too much potential not to keep exploring it despite past lack of economically viable results. Even if a really economically competitive version of this is never found, it might still be a life saver in certain types of (civilian or military) crises. The concept of nuclear powered synthetic fuel factory-ships for the US Navy CSGs really pumps my scifi brain.

      Synthetic fuels tend to be produced by extracting hydrogen from water using electricity. Compared to using battery electric, you need around three times as much electricity per unit of work but benefit from the unparalleled energy density of hydrocarbon/hydronitrogen fuels. With ammonia for example, you then combine 3 of the hydrogen atoms with a single nitrogen atom. This process normally requires heating the reactor to around 500 degrees, which can be done with electricity as well but is energy intensive and results in terrible electricity to fuel ratios. Similar issue with methanol and diesel but rather than just needing to attach a nitrogen atom you need a bit of carbon. There are other emerging methods that do no require heat and if matured can make compact mobile e-fuel production viable.

    So this may sound crazy, and I am only a civilian nerd with limited insight into energy systems (although my family is full of electrical engineers and former servicemen.)
    What about using something like low earth orbit satellites with solar panels, high power storage capacity, and high accuracy high intensity laser emission equipment to basically beam down atmospherically gathered solar energy directly onto a collapsible receiver panel set built to rapidly take in energy?
    If vehicles (manned or unmanned) are fitted with backup electrical energy systems for use in times of acute fuel depletion, these flyby laser charging satellites might reasonably be able to provide laser charges in passing to help.
    Sorry if that's a silly suggestion, I'm just a curious outsider to the topic.

      Cool idea but wouldn't the power transfer speed be very low, or the heat very high? In which case an internal combustion solution would be easier to control

    • @emc3000
      @emc3000 5 месяцев назад

      @hiandrewfisher That's a VERY good point, and I kind of thought the same after mulling it over a bit. I left another comment about the idea of a network of stationary camouflaged molten sand (or other insulated heat store) batteries that could be consistently topped up with occasional satellite bursts.
      Again, nit an expert and only piecing together ideas from my layman's knowledge, and it would likely need to be a networked system of 2 or 3 solution strategies in tandem rather than one solid fix.
      I really appreciate that you took the time to read my spitball suggestion and give constructive feedback!

    What are we talking here days, months, years cannot rely on "efficient" to convey that info.

    still need a to supply *something* to put into the machine, to make fuel. did you have something in mind? the trick is, we burn something we have a surplus of? - Military already has a surplus of “waste” … which is obviously flamable, since “burn pits” are a military trick to dispose of the waste (including 💩)
    it seems you want something that will burn “Solid Waste” as a fuel, to produce energy … these exist already, you just want it to be really small? portable? - this is challenging, b/c the fuel itself has to fit into the chamber.
    🧐 am I allowed to split this into 2 machines? one does the Pyrolysis, the other does the Combustion?
    maybe ONE of them can be small & portable.
    - this also opens the door to temporary “Storage” as well, if we trap the gases, instead of directly passing from one machine to the other. 🤷‍♀️

    • @xanatax1844
      @xanatax1844 5 месяцев назад

      okay … “Pyrolyse the Solid waste” kinda implies a machine that lives on the back of a light truck … takes the entire back end. Gases produced may well be toxic, but also flamable, maybe even explosive if you screw up. - but don’t screw up, do cool the gas down, & filter it … less dangerous. 👍 if it burns well, good enough?
      Then you run Propane/NatGas engines/generators, which can be much smaller. OR, maybe you can feed the gas into a fuel-cell.
      either way, probably need to clean the filters *WAY* more often than if you ran a conventional NatGas … but the goal was in situ production from 🤷‍♀️ whatever.

    • @xanatax1844
      @xanatax1844 5 месяцев назад

      if “Solid Fuel” is on the table for discussion … you probably want a crusher/grinder machine, to breakdown big chunks … that’s a separate machine/truck.
      ALSO … Solid Fuel usually wants to be “dry” … so a drying process, like an kiln … probably gonna help. that’s another machine/truck.

    People have been working on this for centuries, and the best we have come up with is gasification.

      I saw a video recently where a farmer had to puncture an inflated calf to release an insane amount of built up gas (presumably much of which is methane.)
      I don't know if this is what you mean by gasification, but I find myself wondering if ruminant livestock flocks directly from the body and indirectly through some sped up decomposition process of their waste could be a source of burnable methane fuel in a pinch.

    Pay me. HHO as a spicy fuel addative to a diesel internal-combustion-engine, lowering compression requirements, raising engine power, and using less diesel per combustion event. A water tank can be refueled at almost all civ/mil infrastructure. Truck, tanks, and planes will be stuck on high-grade fuels, but boats live on the water .... seems like a wasted opportunity.

    We need to remove taxation on green energy for a known period and allow the industry to realign themselves with a known and agreed upon deadline, soft start in a country willing to create an open source plan and infrastructure for the greater good that can be easily replicated. It is time for us to put on our big boy pants and start winning instead of fighting and energy security deserves to be a right.

    Follow up to my silly satellite laser charger idea. Since the exact timely passover of a charger sattelite might be a logistical nightmare, what about a network of stealth camouflaged molten sand batteries across the globe that can be systematically charged and topped up discreetly via said laser zap satellite network? From what youtube says, advances in molten sand battery tech seems to indicate storage capacity that could endure for weeks, months, or more. So like dump sand battery stores in random parts of the Sahara and shit, top it up via regular beamed energy from Sola energy collected by sattelite, and bam you have a distributed network of energy stores looking like rocks or whatever.
