Virtual private network? Or The Onion Router? Both of these tools are marketed to people looking for better privacy and anonymity on the Internet.
Many regular people that choose VPNs do so to prevent their ISPs from spying on their browsing history and selling it to advertisers. What they don’t realize is that they are not enhancing their privacy - they are just delegating the trust to a different company.
Your VPN provider acts as your entry and exit node. They know your true IP address and they know what websites you visit. If they want to, they can log this activity at any time. If they are required by law enforcement, they can hand over all of your browsing data to them.

This is me fulfilling my promise, he’s my favorite after so many heartbreaks. I thought it was time to give myself a break and focus on my job while trying to heal from my previous toxic relationship. After about a year and half I met a lady who turned out to be my boss daughter, I was reluctant at first but her persistence and high spiritedness got me submissive. We started getting along so well , no day passes without constant communication, I fell in love and didn’t want to be hurt ever again; told her my weaknesses and she told me hers, along the line she came across her ex and her attitude towards me started getting cold. Seemed like deja vu all over and so I couldn’t let the anxiety tear me apart. I met a colleague who introduced me to the best set of Private investigators , I contacted and hired them almost immediately and they requested a down payment to commence the job after targets cell number was provided. After 24 hrs they responded with all the deleted messages and archives of pictures she’s been sending out; I practically had access to her phone without her knowledge. Turns out she connived with her young sibling to test my patience and tolerance, all the info was carted to me , thanks to the hackers I now pass her test with ease, lol . They could increase security by adding random delays into the network to prevent correlation attacks, it's been suggested many times but as the poster mentioned "speed" which is why they so far have not done so they worry about people complaining. Still it has other downsides like exploits I can think of 1 or 2 events where the software has been exploited to locate servers and gain physical access. Really no system is perfect I agree with in general privacy but at the same time I don't have anything to hide (as much as I hate that statement). It's really just a trust based system regardless of what you are using.
I've tried it in the past but for my needs it was overkill completely and hurt my experience using the web in general.

The main thing not mentioned here is the fact that because anyone can run TOR you have no guarantees on network connection quality while using it. The speed is not encumbered only by the number of hops but also by the latency and available bandwidth in each hop.

I'd suggest using Tor for as much as possible and then use a paid VPN for things Tor gets blocked for if you don't have a bridge, because I don't have one. Mozilla has a vpn now which I have. I can use it for certain things . The biggest thing is I trust Mozilla VPN more than my ISP and everything between me and the vpn so encrypting me traffic going out to the VPN is better than going without it if Tor can't do the job. 1:45 It does add protection against the different server's data centers or their ISP.
7:30 By trustless design it means that the Tor project does not need to approve new nodes and admit them into the network. While anyone can join, the Tor project does monitor the network to try and detect malicious behavior.
11:10 Tor is blocked more often because Tor is popular and has a public list of exit node ips.

      @@cheeriosaltcream sure
it means that you should use a VPN to connect to Tor to maximize your anonymity and privacy
you can get 'the best of both worlds' by doubling up and using both
if you use Tor alone, the internet service provider sees you using Tor and you stick out to them, though they might not know what you're doing on Tor they see you using it
if you use VPN alone you are susceptible to law enforcement and government subpeonas and spying, because VPN companies are legal entities most of the time and have to operate under the thumb of the law, even foreign law.
If you use the VPN to connect to Tor, what you ISP sees = VPN, what your VPN sees = Tor, what Tor sees = the VPN . You are layering these services so that each service must be compromised to reveal what you're doing, rather than just one.
Also : you should definitely disable or turn the security way up on your javascript options in the browser while using Tor , as these are notorious for being attack vectors, and if you're using Tor there's a decent chance the sites you are checking out may be honeypots or bugged. Using a VPN alone to do this is a bad idea because the company running the VPN may have an agreement to send pertinent data to law enforcement, or be forced to by the courts of their respective country.

Your channel is my first stop shop for info internet security, not my only source to be sure, but the one I probably check the most. I have learned a lot and I would consider you and your channel to be an invaluable resource your taking back my right to privacy and security on the Web. And I learned a lot of info about things I never used to give a second thought to. Now whenever I speak to someone about privacy and security on the Web and they say "what have you got to hide" I let them know they're asking the wrong question what they should be asking is "why do you need to know" and I send them to your page. A lot of the time it falls on deaf ears especially when they hear the steps they'll need to take and in some cases the expense they'll have to pay. But when I give them some of your examples as to t why worry about privacy or something along the lines of imagine your insurance company using your posts on facebook about you drinking at parties to not pay out if you ever need a liver transplant because you engaged in "risky behavior" and that usually starts the wheels turning. But sadly most people are content to allow the privacy warnings to go unheeded. Please Keep up the great work!

I'd say yes. Some people are trying to claim that its worse, but their argument is usually crap. In the default configuration (virtual network adapter, TOR makes tunnels), the VPN will make your ISP unaware that you are using TOR, and your VPN cant read your traffic to the guard node, because it has 3 layers of encryption. The only weakness is that the VPN can do correlation, but they dont have an interest to do that, and if the government has control of your VPN you are stuck between a rock and a hard place (the isp is likely controlled too).

@Red Rain 😂 I'm not using your typical free VPN. I use lifetime premium VPN that I didn't pay for and don't have my info attached to the account. Running on Win10 and then I'm using a VM loaded with Tails. So maybe you need to go out and learn a little more before coming and making irreverent posts.

    Nice.
    So...
    - you get a live cd of the distro of your preference
    - you educate yourself to deal with packages, rpms or whatever and their dependencies
    - you learn to tame wild NICs with experimental drivers
    - you get tor working anyway you want
    ...and you're ready to go.
    Pretty cool.

I used Tor a few years ago, but stopped because it was too slow. I definitely like the concept of Tor more, and I hope to try it again some time. I think the most important right, which isn't currently recognized by any state that I'm aware of, is the right to anonymity. Freedom of speech/expression cannot exist without the right to be anonymous. If people don't take control of their information, and assert their right to be anonymous, democracy dies.

VPN is a virtual private network.
You can also use it to reach parts of another network.
For example some shared data at my parents house.
If I want to , I can use VPN to connect to my parents network and see the shared information.
So my pc → my router → VPN encryption method → (my ISP → parents ISP) → parents network → VPN decryption → parents pc (or NAS/device) with shared files. (8)
Without VPN it looks like this:
my pc → my router → (my ISP → parents ISP) → parents network → parents pc (or NAS/device). (6)
So there is no end-to-end encryption between the networks by default.
With the VPN method you can "only" access the data through the VPN-tunnel.
VPN is therefore ideal for business or private purposes, but TOR is better if you want browser anonymity.
TOR is also made for browser anonymity and not for network security.
With VPN, the entire network communication is encrypted via VPN.
    Final conclusion.
VPN for secured files between networks.
Tor for anonymous browsing on the internet. (between networks)
