It will work like a guitar string. Will go thru some motion, but any energy you take out will lower the amplitude until the mechanism finds an equilibrium point where magnets apply the same force to the central part. Then it will be still.
A year or two ago, there was a video on yt showing a large scale permenant magnet generator that could provide power for a fairly large village. The generator was fully installed in a shipping container and was initially started using a solar panel to power a large flywheel which in turn caused the magnets to spin. I cant seem to find the video now.

Without the e-magnets the device does not run. What is shown in the video is an e-motor, which is driven by a generator, and the generator is driven by the e-motor. This does not work. And it is also not feasible to turn the permanent magnets, since this turning also needs energy, and thus the gained energy is lost again.

Great point, so I wonder if you simply added springs or a fly wheel, if that would keep it going. The way large clutch machines work is that a motor starts a very large fly wheel and then a clutch draws from the momentum of the flywheel. If the weight of the flywheel was just enough to keep the magnet pistons going, I think it would work.

It seems this would extend the life of the permanent magnet, but will it eventually reach an equilibrium? I had come up with nearly the same design yet also incorporating the stirling engine but the heat would hurt most permanent magnets

I suspect the amount of energy it takes to "neutralize" the permanent magnet long enough to allow the complete revolution will be as much as the magnet itself can produce by pushing against the other magnet. It means sure it will work as a motor, but it is not free energy, it will take added energy to make it run, and not just run but take a load too. But that is just suspicion, but based on some fact. Look at a steam piston 🧐 it pushes the piston from both sides doubling the torque, I think it could be done with magnets as well 😉

You are not wrong. What you have here is an e-motor driven by a generator, and the generator is driven by the e-motor. Since both of the have losses, this can't work. And here is absolutely no chance to get a surplus of energy with such a device.
