You should give this video and update to see the old Albemarle hotel that's now The Residences. They did an amazing job on that old building and there's a restaurant in the lobby. There have been some good improvement on updating the outsides of some of these buildings as well. Maybe they saw this video & paid attention!! 🙂

That’s great news. I definitely need to get by there to film the improvements.

I am an Albemarle native, thanks for the video and straight-forward opinions. I just want you to know that the "Albemarle Music Store" is a hidden treasure. If you go inside and ask they will let you go upstairs where the original owner has the most incredible working display of model trains and planes you will ever see. On Saturdays he used to actually run the trains. It was amazing. When I came back home several years ago the trains were still there but no one runs them. You would enjoy seeing it if you get a chance.

I agree. I'm from Albemarle too and have played fiddle since I was 3. I buy all my musical paraphernalia from Carol.

    Hey buddy,
I just stumbled on to this. Thanks for visiting our town. I work for the city fire department, as you noticed the trucks going by, we are very busy!!!
Thanks for pointing out how our downtown needs some love. A few families own nearly all the buildings and refuse to sell or fix them up. 😡 Now things are really starting role on our downtown and other areas of the city. Those hotels are all soon to be apartments. Please come back and feel free to reach out to me as I am proud of my city and people.
    Take Care
    Mike Hinson

The pawn shop on the corner main and 1 st was a five and dime store with the old hard wood floors. The depot is a busy place with all different events in the summer plus the farmer market ☺️

At 3:02 you said something about buildings and rent. So, I actually live in Albemarle, and have my entire life. Virtually half of downtown Albemarle is owned by the Kings, and almost all of the rest by the Hearnes. They are two aristocratic families that are related and both use the same realtor. The rent was extremely low, until about a month after this came out. The realtor, who manages everything for the Kings and Hearnes, quintupled the rent. So yeah, a lot of small businesses were forced out over the course of two or three months.

I hate that. Greed is killing America right now.

24:30 was a movie theatre at one time. My parent's took us see Grease there. Think that was last movie i saw there. 😢 my grandparents took my brother and I to a movie and walked us to Goody Shoppe for a Burger. At that time in 70s it stay open late.

Thanks for sharing. Movie theaters are becoming a thing of the past unfortunately. But some have been able to stay open by highlighting the retro ambience.

@@TimothyFrench I wish they would reopen it. Now in Babin, right next to Albemarle they reopen their Drive In. Think it was in 1995. That was a big hit. I am enjoying your videos. I am in between Albemarle and Mt Pleasant. My Mama use to be Town Clerk for Mt Pleasant 90-96. My dad grew up in Mt Pleasant. My Great Grandparent lived in the old hotel" house" in Mt Pleasant. They ( new owners) moved the house. It's still in Mt Pleasant. But where you were standing across street. Asking what the small building was? That is where the Hotel use to be located. Till 1979 or 1980.

As a Southerner and interested party of the American demographic, l have experienced Albemarle NC. They have great potential and kind people. They only need the support of their own citizens and the interest of their region to succeed. A little help from state and federal with the enfranchisement of all it's people. It could improve the curb appeal and decrease crime and drug abuse. This would work for all small town America. That's your infrastructure.

Anyone have any more information on Servco (Service Distributing Company) - the gas company? I am trying to do more research on it - there is not a whole lot of information I can find. I know it was a business partner with Hess, and sold toy trucks every year at the gas stations just like Hess did.

@@TimothyFrench Thanks for the tip. However, I think I have looked at this before, and it still leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The gas stations closed between 2004 and 2010? maybe, but I have heard rumors of the company still being in business anyway - can't find much on what they are doing now. I think there are two different Service Distributing companies that get confused a lot - I could be wrong on that, though. Should I try calling their number???

@@TimothyFrench I'm actually making a list of all the former Servco gas station locations I can find - if you want, I can send it to you, or maybe copy it on here, so you can spot them on your travels. Most are in North Carolina - which makes sense for a North Carolina based company.
