You're a real one for shutting down that ride because your gut didn't feel right operating it like it was. Safety and going home happy and safe always outweigh the money. The money will come later. God bless

I always enjoy your videos. Been a nut for rides all my life. Summer of ‘65 I was the lead operator on a Herschel Mad Mouse at Fair Park in Nashville. Then in ‘67 and ‘68 I worked part time at Joyland in Wichita. Being a little older than most of the crew, I was often the relief operator so I got to run everything at one time or another, from their ancient Philadelphia Toboggan coaster to their assortment of Herschel and Hampton kiddy rides. When not relieving I was often on the 16 seat Big Eli wheel because I could run it with a gentle touch and not slam it around like the kids were prone to do. Also being a train nut my favorite ride was the train which I was told was the first Chance C.P.Huntington. Keep the great videos coming. They’re as close as this crippled up 78 year old is likely to get to the midway these days.

Man I've rode the mad mouse more times than I can count at the Nashville fair park.It really looked/felt as if the train was gonna run right off the track when you got to a curved section.

I really like this style of video - the mixture of parts where you explain stuff and the parts where it is just observing what happens with original sound and no commentary is really well done.

Hey, so I'm in the UK and used to work as a rides operator (I absolutely loved the job and I so wish the theme park I worked at was still open!), can I just say, thank you for taking the hit and not opening a ride you felt wasn't safe to operate.
We both know, too many people in the industry would think of profit over safety, and too many of us know what can happen when that mentality seeps into our industry.
You genuinely think of the safety of your riders and I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart.
As I'm in the UK, I can tell you that so many operators have turned to a wristband system, or a pay on entry system, so if you have to close early due to weather the attitude is "no refunds, it's an act of god" kinda thing. I don't know your policy on this kind of thing, but I'd respect your decision either way tbh.
Our industry is going through some really difficult times at the moment, which is why I'm so impressed that you went with safety over profits, again, thank you.

Hey BRW! here's a suggestion to make your setups easier:
On the himalaya, On the last day of either the rental or carnival, remove the decorations you dont need (crown in the middle and the top canvas) that way itll be faster to teardown.

  • @rexnewcombe8337

Hi Darren , I have to say you did the right thing about the Spider because you really can't run a ride and keep it balanced. Working for different carnival shows years ago, and knowing that things wear out and have to be replaced. It was too bad you had to wait for the part from Battech there in Salem Or. but I know you are very patient. One thing is that I don't miss setting up or tearing down the rides every week or so. I love how you explain the process and love your signs, one idea for the scooter is maybe put some other fence around the ride or make with PVC pipe and some rope to go around it. ❤

Show biz is so fun... It's kind of in my blood. I design build and install scenery. The lights, effects and mechanical stuff. I used to build large stage machinery like revolves and lifts. Safety is always number one. First for the cast and crew, but also because there is an audience of innocents on the other side of the curtain. Coming into an empty venue and knowing EXACTLY where to drop the first piece of the stage or the power distro is critical! I've only had to move a stage once and it was awful! (and not anyone's fault- the show needed the change and that was that).
And it's all part of the wonderful backstage life!!
    Thanks for the videos!

45:28 WOW the ride lasted approximately 1minute 22seconds THATS really chintzy and probably cost $5 to ride.......I remember as a kid and young teenager in the early to late 70's
all the carnivals coming thru the town where I grew up you learned the carnival company's that had really short rides and knew not to waste your hard earned money on them

I’ve been the mechanic in charge of a Wisdom Silver streak for over 10 years and we’ve had two sweeps break on it. The tubbing is about as thin as a pop can. We’ve reinforced and beefed up the sweeps but I don’t trust the ride. The centre ring was also constantly cracking. I blamed our issues partially on the fact that the ride is mounted in a permanent location. I always felt the ride needed that slight flex from being on a trailer.
I should add the one time a sweep broke was a week after NDT testing was done.

Great video. I had an idea for the bumper car problem. Can you put an additional fence at a given distance from ride around it. I know this would be an added expense and there could be a storage and transportation of fence could be an issue. Keep the videos coming.

Love watching all the in depth behind the scenes of these things. Here in Australia we mainly have "carnival styles" when it comes to travelling amusements. Here, they run regardless of the weather. It can be pouring down buckets and the rides continue to run in the rain. The only factor that I've known to ever shut down rides is when the wind is too strong and too ropeable.

Hey, im a showman in the UK, i started setting my business up in April, and i started trading in August, i have a bouncy castle and an inflatable slide at the moment, im looking into getting a ride, or building a ride, as building a ride would spread the cost over many months instead of having a lump sum to find, i have been offered a junior merry go round cheap, but it wants a lot of restoration work, we call that kind of ride a "toy set" its pretty much a carousel, but theres no horses on it, and the vehicles on it dont move up and down, there just bolted down to the platform and go round with the ride, you can put spinning tea cups on it, or mini waltzer cars, but that would be a long term project, and i really need a ride that's ready to work, but there so expensive
Im watching your channel for a little inspiration, see what you guys do over in the states
Most of my work is private fairs, where i turn up for free and charge customers per ride or for a set amount of time, i have had a few paid events where i turn up for a set amount and customers ride for free, but there very rare here
Keep up the good work, your doing great

I like the videos, glad to see you’re investing in things like lav mics. Might want to check the gains or filters, sounds a bit muffled/clipped when your voice is raised. There’s no background noise which is nice, but it might be over-filtering and clipping or something.

Big Round Wheel Amusements - I was a part time carny for Wade Shows and pugh shows. Back in the day the carnival workers who went town to town would sleep in a little space no wider then 6 feet which is located on the same truck of the games, but directly behind it. you should show the space the room had no air condition, no heat. so sleeping in it can be unbearable, the space only providing sleeping quarters. you had to go use a porta-potty somewhere on the carnival lot or if you lucky one of the buildings nearby. My 2nd job I did was working in a hot dog food trailer. every county health dept would check you for food safety, I was offered $250.00 week I was doing it. and you get paid whether you worked 7 days or 4 days. which included set-up and tear down. I suggestive sell every person without being told and the carnival owner rewarded me with a $50.00 bonus.
