    I love that you not only provide so many safe places for the wildlife on your property but take the time to share it with the world!! Hopefully these will allow others to see the beauty of our wildlife and prevent them from killing raccoons and other animals. Sadley alot of people view them as pests and target practice. P.s I would enjoy watching longer videos.

      Thank you, Joelle! We hope so too. People might think we're insane to be building dens all over the place, but they do get used and they're great when the animals need shelter. Thanks for telling us you like longer videos, too, but they can be hard to construct. However, they're worth the trouble because sometimes we can actually tell a story.

    Fun fact: daddy long legs aren't venomous or even technically spiders. They are called Opiliones. They don't even have fangs- they are omnivores and eat fruits and veggies and eat their prey similar to how a preying mantis does, grabs n chews. Hope this helps anyone who's curious. :)

    The name for baby raccoons are kits, not pups or puppies.

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife
      @TexasBackyardWildlife  3 года назад +1

      Yes, it is. Though cubs is apparently accepted also. We chose cubs (did we call them pups in this video?) because we feared people might not be familiar with "kits". We call the baby foxes "pups" for the same reason, even though "kits" in the case of foxes is 100% correct.

    • @PhantomQueenOne

      @@TexasBackyardWildlife You said pups. They are also called cubs (but kits is the most common name), as the females are sows, and the males are boars, just like in bears.

    Are you sure your Daddy Long Legs are not arachnid Harvestman. There called Daddy Long Legs in in my neighborhood in Wisconsin as well. They may have a venom but it seems harmless to people. Don’t seem that aggressive.

    They’re called Kits rather than Pups but I am sure you know that by now. I think she is squirmy and agitated because she has FIVE little squirmy babies that she has to care for ALL ON HER OWN!!! The males impregnate the females and then go on their way and leave a pregnant and later mama female to do all the work of caring for and raising the babies all on her own. My resident mama has five new kits and yesterday it was so hot here…she brought all five under my deck near my front door because it was cooler down there. I was curious how she transports them. Her nest is somewhere back in the woods so it is quite an ordeal to move each one at a time a far distance and it must be stressful to leave them alone on each end. Mine was famished and came back later in the day for me to feed her her daily ration of peanuts and sunflower seeds which I have done throughout her pregnancy for some added protein to help her stay strong and healthy. She has trusted me for three or four years and comes back with her kits each summer and then the fun really begins. We’ve never had five kits before so I am very excited this time. I love raccoons…have done ever since I raised two orphans through a wildlife program back in 1991. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. Raccoons are beautiful animals and when a wild creature such as this offers you trust and companionship it is a true wonder to behold.

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife
      @TexasBackyardWildlife  3 месяца назад

      Thank you so much for telling us our story, @vestcoat. You're right, we do know now that baby raccoons are called kits. In our earlier videos we often called them pups or cubs. We are very good friends with lots of the raccoons who live in or near our backyard, and we feel very enriched by our contact with them. They come up to our deck when we're sitting out with wine in the evening and we feed them peanuts and other treats. In the heat of the summer we create a swimming pool for them, with fresh water every night, and the little ones paddle around and play in it. We put it up on our live stream. The adults and the babies trust us and know us and are very gentle around us. We love being around them.

    • @vestcoat
      @vestcoat 3 месяца назад

      @@TexasBackyardWildlife I love that!!! I feel the same way as you about these beautiful animals, Mine are always very well behaved…even the kits when mama finally brings them around to start eating real food during or after weaning. When I mention that I befriend and feed mama raccoons to some of my friends they squirm or roll their eyes and hold their tongue from commenting….generally the backyard chicken owners are these…and I can understand their disdainful attitude, having to battle coons that kill their chickens from time to time. Hell….I would take raccoons over chickens anyday. I am so happy for you that you get to experience the same kind of joy that I do, thanks to these lovely creatures.

      These are harvestman - that's just a fancy name for daddy longlegs I think. You're right that they're venomous, but they're not at all dangerous to humans or other mammals because they physically can't bite us - as you say.

  • @marilynpattison2438
    @marilynpattison2438 3 года назад

    As cute and interesting as raccoon families are keep in mind that mother raccoons will absolutely eat their kits. They also carry distemper, rabies, and roundworms in their poop. They will also abandon their young if something is wrong with the baby or if they are albino. But they generally are good mothers. They are just nasty mean animals.

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife
      @TexasBackyardWildlife  3 года назад +14

      We've watched quite a few raccoon mothers with their little ones and we've never seen unkind behavior - in fact, we often comment that humans would be better off if we all parented the way raccoon mamas do.
      Thanks for the reminder about the diseases raccoons can carry. It's true, and we are careful around them. Fortunately, re. roundworms, raccoons establish latrines and use them without fail, so even though lots of raccoons pass through the backyard we rarely see any poo. They're very discrete little critters.
      We love them (I guess that shows since we have so many raccoon videos on our website). They are endlessly funny and inquisitive, and impressively clever.
