    Hi guys!!
I have been an AMPUTEE since 2004.
In 2000 I had a paragliding accident, after which I struggled with complications of my left leg. Constant infections and acute, chronic pain pushed me to the point where I considered amputation. Ultimately it was the right decision, which opened up a completely different life to me.
Today I am a happy amputee. In this channel I aim to share what it is that got me to this space. I hope that you find your own happiness, despite, and even because of, the struggles of becoming an amputee :-)

Ahh the procrastination nation! I think we all get there at some time in out journey through amputation. But in all fairness, I have always been one and becoming an amputee has made it worse. I struggle with finding excuses for not doing things. I’m so glad you are willing to talk openly about it too. We are certainly not alone in this journey. I appreciate your willingness to address the issue and everyone could use the encouragement to get off our butts and make conscious efforts to take care of the bodies we have been givin. A strong healthy body gives way to a strong healthy mind. Thanks Chris for sharing

Hi Chris. Great message. I am a fellow amputee and I struggle with procrastination also. I had my BKA about a year and a half ago. I am doing really well with my prosthetic. I am so happy I had it. My quality of life has significantly improved already. But I need to strengthen my core to improve my gait. I have always struggled with exercise. But I do want to walk better. It’s good to hear I am not alone. Thanks for being so honest. Look forward to continuing on this journey with you and your followers.

Hi Geraldine, good to hear from you again. Im so stoked to hear you're doing well with your prosthetic with improved quality of life. Core strength, balance, and some cardio goes such a long way to our best possible mobility. The gait will improve over time, as long as we are mindfully working on it, which it seems you are.
Good luck with the exercise ... looks like we're in this together :-)

Thanks Chris. If your the master procrastinator than I am god level uber mega grand president of the procrastination. 😁 last we chatted I was due a further TK amputation. I havent scheduled it and I've been blaming in on Covid and the condition of the hospital's so this video is, as it always seems to be, exactly what I need to hear. I have an amusement park trip scheduled on thanksgiving for myself and my children (11 and 8 yr old) on thanksgiving (Nov 26). Since my original accident (4/2017) I haven't been able to do anything with them so I'm doing this. Hell or high water. However after it's done I'm going to go ahead and have the surgery. So it is spoken and therefore must be achieved or else I'm a liar. Thanks again for the inspiration, guidance, and for setting such a great example. Wish there was some way I could give back. Untill next time brother...

Chris, I love your channel. Most helpful one I've found since my RBKA 2/28/20. I like to beat myself up now and again for procrastination, I think it is common to most people, but amputees also have a sense of something lost that can, at best, be approximated, but never fully recovered. The thought of losing anything more is especially acute. But maybe more than most people we also have to let the "water", our energy, pool up so it can eventually spill over into action again. From the upper left corner of the US, happy surfing! When you get around to it. And someday I will learn. :)

I am aka and have been since 1967 following a motorcycle accident - spectacular crash multiple injuries but it wasn’t my time and the nurses did a brilliant job .I was a very fit youngster playing rugby and swimming for my school before the accident and I was now disable and getting depressed. One day a young psychiatrist visited me and asked me how I felt my answer was I felt very pissed off or something like that ! He came every week from the first visit and got the same answer to the question. Then at one visit he told me that a guy had been admitted the night before and had lost an arm in a accident would I have my bed moved next to his so that when he came around from the anaesthetic he would see that we had both had amputations . This went well his name was Robin and we soon got a system of working together I would cut his dinner up do shirt buttons tie shoelaces hold paper done for writing he would get our dinners go buy cigarettes and generally run errands for me.After sometime the quack returned and he asked me about how I was getting along with my leg and he still got the same answer then asked about Robin and put this to me Would I rather have lost an arm or a leg? I told him that I was doing so much for him that I’d definitely choose a leg . Later that day Robin said that he had been chatting to the quack about me and had told him that looking after a leg amputee was a big job and he would choose an arm ! Perhaps this quack wasn’t so inexperienced as I thought because he had shown us both that we were already accepting our loss. Just thought I could share those thoughts.

Hi Fred, thank you for your messages and for revealing so much of your story.
I think its amazing that you were so engaging from the start with other amputees. It took me years before I finally reached out and identified with amputees, before that my denial was to strong to see myself as one of "them".
It sounds like the doc did a helpful thing for both of you after all. I do believe that giving back and supporting imputes is a part of the acceptance process.
      Take care mate

Hi Chris. Its so good to see another post from you, the procrastination makes you disappear every now and then LoL. Since I got off my crutches and onto my leg I lost around 15 kg in body weight, most of that ever since I joined the gym again and started walking more and more every week. For me it is critical to stay fit and healthy so that I can enjoy this awesome leg I got from Eugene (it would be a shame for a leg like this to have a lazy unfit human using it)! I do not think about the past for my believe is that now is much more important to me than yesterday and what I do now will make tomorrow. I really hope to hear from you soonest!!!

Hi Otto, jeez 15kg!! Well done man, that is a big commitment.
Yes health and weight management is so crucial to us, and you're right, having such a great leg and not using it for what it can do will be a sin for me too.
I love your philosophy on time, its something I'm going to adopt if you dont mind!

Great point Rob. I’m just so happy to be able to walk long distances and on different surfaces I’m not really thinking about running. Although I have had people ask me when I will be running. I am happy and proud to be where I am right now at this point. I need to remind myself of that every now and then. That’s why I really appreciate Chris’s videos.

Hi Rob, welcome to our community and thanks for your message.
I think the mantra "progress, not perfection" has really served me well for 16 years. Every now and then there is a big improvement in my abilities, that is progress - sometimes fast, sometimes slower, but progress none the less. Occasionally there is a setback, I am OK with this and I try to "budget" for the discomfort.
I would suggest that if you feel that there are expectations from others which make you anxious, that you express that directly to them. This is a very personal journey - no 2 people are the same, no one can walk this for us, I think others should be aware of this and respect my pace and progress.
In one of these comments Danie suggested that procrastination is often driven by fear ... I think this is so true, and maybe a good idea to identify our fears, and to own them, rather that my fears owning me.
All the best with your process - be gentle on yourself, one day a time, with no unrealistic hope of time-bound outcome. We will get there, in our own time.
Until then there is a lot of new experiences and enjoyment to be had!

Dearest Patricia, I feel your fear and my heart goes out to you. I am 56 and still believe it’s the best choice I made, but I was a lot younger. I know older people who have successfully gone trough this, it can work out well with the right support.

Yes the big P, I think it's in us all at varying levels. I must say after my mva, I've got a bit of a wake up call and decided not to wait anymore, small things I try to do immediately eg. call someone I'm thinking about, bigger things I break up in parts and start with 1st step asap, I find with bigger tasks I can easily over think If I try to keep all the parts in mind all the time so have to continously decide to focus only on the one I'm busy with. One other thing is that it may be useful to spend a few minutes at looking why one is procrastinating to get something done, I would for instance never proc. When I want to buy a new bike, or that Mavic air 2 that looks so cool, but arranging a visit with someone I used to care about a lot that I lost touch with over time is a different story, could it be I'm afraid? Of what then? Why? Has it always been the case? Why would it be different now? Soon I realize that I'm just making excuses based on non facts and the only way to know truth is to get on with it :)
K, enough rambling. I do have a question, I was wondering if you've got any Idea on life expectancy on your rheo knee VS one of your mechanical/hydrolic knees?

    • @theampedlife
      @theampedlife  3 года назад +1

Hi Danie, thanks for the message. I love what you suggested - to look at why some things get done asap and others not - like that Mavic Air 2 example! I think you are 💯 % spot on - for me the answer is mostly fear ... or avoidance of confrontation (same thing?).
Certainly the P with making a video for example is about fear - eg. will it be received well? Will it be relevant?
Thank you so much, I will be focussing on those questions you suggested - I find it so valuable.
