I decided to switch to Printables last night. Then this video comes out, coincidentally. So I feel very much that the tipping point has been reached. Stratasys chose to let Thingiverse die. It's not worth it to them to exploit it. If they had a heart, they'd sell it to someone who could breathe new life into it, instead of letting it fade into oblivion. It's not respectful to people who have poured millions of hours of their time into loading it with amazing content.

I tend to hoard my designs and never share them. I've been tossing around the idea of sharing with the community and trying to get more involved with other printers and modelers. I think I may use this as a kicking off point and start uploading to Printables and maybe join in their current contest. Thanks for the useful and informative video!

Thanks to you, I've started using Onshape modelling random things that I need around the house, mostly inspired by the wardrobe clip video. Please do not use their services.". It's a reddit thread where a user is not only ripped off, but then gets doxxed and insulted by the company, and the companies ceo themselves acts outrageously unprofessionally. At every turn they dig themselves deeper, and I just want people to know so a company that scummy doesn't end up becoming the de facto standard with all the ad space they pay for.

Does Printables have any sort of "Customizer" option? I realize that these *.scad files can easily be customized offline, and, that the Thingiverse version often doesn't work very well. But, when it does work, it can be convenient.

    • @borr33tube
      @borr33tube 2 года назад +8

Printables does not have a customizer but there is another solution. The RUclipsr [Make With Tech] has installed the OpenSCAD software on AWS and has created his own front-end customizer software that will search for .scad files on Thingiverse. You can then render the file using his system like Thingiverse used to do when it worked. You can find out more by looking at the RUclips video on Make With Tech area titled [Customize 3d Printing Models with your Browser] on March 18, 2022. I would start at 4:58 to get to the section that talks about this system.

I've been on Printables for about 5 weeks. I've got up to 185 meters of filament, and then stalled there for a few weeks. You need 380 to get a free spool. Printables has perhaps 1/4 of the users as Thingiverse. I uploaded things that I had already had on Thingiverse for months. After the first 10 uploads, you don't get any more points toward your free filament, but if you can get 50 or more downloads (per model), you can potentially get more points down the line. You can increase your creator level by uploading more than 10 models, but that isn't worth anything.
Uploading makes will get you points, at least for the first 10, but I'm not really sure why. It's harder to find things to make on Printables, as there aren't as many models as there are on Thingi. Maybe if they didn't stop rewarding uploaders after the first 10 models. . . ?

The aspect to earn some points for submissions makes me thinking to go there. I uploaded almost 10 years at thingiverse and watch it digging its own grave. I don't want to get rich by submitting my designs and prefer the opensource way, but it frustrated me to see that most people are looking for something to get free and download without any respect for the creator who has developed the part for hours or days and made many test prints. So I always ask if it hurts in the fingers to click the like button before downloading something for free? Does it hurt to give a little feedback by clicking a little heart icon?

Lots of good stuff on Thingiverse but as a neubie I hit some issues that made me question my sanity ... until I found an answer by chance. I was downloading and printing stl files and everything was going great - learning and dealing with minor issues which is a normal learning curve. Then I tried to print an Altoids Watercolor Pallette insert. It would print but not what was shown in the 3D rendering in Cura - it was just a flat bottom layer with one layer walls to make a very fragile structure and no trays.. So there I was thinking - was the downloaded file corrupted or incomplete or was I a dummie missing something. I started thinking about what was missing - structured walls - so I went into Cura and went through every menu until I stumbled upon
Print Settings > Strength > Infill Density > increased to 40
Infill Pattern - set to Cubic
    Shell Thickness set to .08mm
    then Support - turned ON
    Support type - Normal
    Placement - Everywhere
then I Sliced it and Printed - Viola - it printed perfectly just like the 3D model in Cura
In my opinion the comment section in the Thingiverse description should have mentioned this.
but who am I to complain ....

Im still using Thingerverse for the moment but im only just hanging in there because they have some files that Pintables don't have yet, but yes i am mainly using Pintables, the only thing that i have found is that the files are defaulting to Prusa Slicer, but even Prusa seems to have a reasnoble slicer which i have found easy to use as apposed to Cura.
    Just my 2 cents worth..

I think we all need to make an effort to prompt people to upload to printables when they share a model link to something they've just added to thingiverse. Some people dont follow whats been going on and have no idea that thingiverse is one day just going to vanish - the sooner it does the better really.

Hi. Since this is the most happening situation in the global 3d print comunity im flying by. Posting.
      Migrates.
      Semi migrates.
      Transfers.
To direct people to the sites that have such services we require to know which services the sites offer.
I vet 3d print sites over many years, and often re vet apon request. Must be my hobby. I know which site have migrates proven. I have become a self stated 3d print license king.
Not cause i use every type but positions held. And experiense of having done, semi migrates, migrates, transfers.
So that means including i sold the ownership of the thing into another persons user name with new uploads date matched back to original.
Ive made a few vids on it but my point is i also could direct people to printables if someone could say if they have semi migrate, or migrate?
Transfers of course we would all love to hear if they do it. Or not fine either way just what do they have.
Its just hard to promote a mystery.
      Do you know?
      Have you tried it yet?
Im just waiting for someone to try it first. Printables could be great.
Answers so far are thin. No ive not asked the site. Users are gonna have proof of service having migrated and upload dates matched.
Its all about finding out what to say they have.
Getting some proof. Usually proof is two links showing a 10 year old thingiverse thing.
And a after migrate version at printables uploaded and migrated today that shows a UPLOAD DATE of 10 years ago.
So just the two page links are required for all the comunity to see the evidence. We can see printables version uploaded today has had its upload date set back to the true real correct original invention upload date.
Semi migrate the dates dont match, a manual email to activate a date match then Making it into a migrate. Dates matched.
      Hope you understand.
Promote likely yes apon knowing what they have.
Hay if you want to tell me details also tell me commision rates on sales there. Or what you like.
      Thank you.
      ???

Not that I have a lot of models on the Tverse, but I will be moving them all to Printables after seeing how easy it is. Maybe this will get me motivated to upload more models in the future as seems like a better process to add models on Printables.

I normally use thingiverse when I need something to print. The thing I find annoying though is the lack of the zip file instead of downloading each individual file. It makes me wonder if they are actually trying to discourge downloading files. Then my pet peeve is there is no check to make sure the stl file is made correctly. Especially if you spent the time downloading a file and modifying it only to find out that it won't print. I appreciate the accessibility of these models, but I also want to actually be able to modify and to print it for my own use.
I may have to checkout printables and see if it is better to use. I have tried other sites, but was not that impressed with the content on their site.

I'd have been interested to hear you also discuss Thangs and Cults3d for their prod and cons. I believe Cults has been blacklisted in some spaces for some bad behavior with paying creators. But thangs looks really promising to me, it does need some work on the GUI, particularly around account holder collections and follows. Plus I think community engagement there is low.

I actually though of creating a thingiverse clone as thingiverse itself is no hassle to program at all, but makerbot just screws things up for no reason (without even introducing other improvements). I mean the download button stopped working because... yeah, why actually? There was absolutely no obvious change and tbh this bug is fixable by some intern in no time, but it stayed.
But my first glance at printables seems that it already is a thingiverse clone which is actively maintained. Prusa is known for keeping customers in mind and Prusa ist also a big name in hte industry so there's a good chance it will grow fast and is meant to stay. Especially the thinigiverse import feature is a pretty big deal as it clearly states that it wants to outdo thingiverse.

But I'm curious about what protection they have from someone creating an account and importing someone else's entire library of creations? (Oh, Never mind. That's why they ask you to add your Printables profile link to your Thingiverse profile.)
