- A shipwreck, an earthquake, and a love duet ("Born to Be Together") from the 1990 Broadway musical "Shogun," with June Angela (Tuptim in the 1977 Yul Brynner Broadway "King and I"), Philip Casnoff, and Francis Ruivivar (the second Engineer in the original Broadway "Miss Saigon.") This was shot the day before the closing; fine singer Casnoff will not in top form but went on. (You can hear him in healthy voice on the Broadway cast recording of "Chess.")
Aurora you are literally a gift from above! Thank you for consistently surprising us with AMAZING gems and broadway history. Nerds and dramaturgs alike thank you profoundly!!
The sad thing is I saw the show and remember nothing about it.
I saw the show in Washington DC before it went to Broadway. I thought it was terrible.
I saw it, too, at the Marquis. All I remember is the plot was so convoluted that there was a playbill insert with a plot summary.
Oh I was just talking about the new FX show with my brother (he loves the book) and I reminded him it was already a broadway musical
Thank you! Had no idea that a new TV adaptation was in the works. Just looked it up and see that it's coming in February.
Its the legendary shipwreck seen mentioned in "Not Since Carrie" ! wow, many thanks. Mendelbaum was right, it certainly was impressive.
Gems like this continue to make u the best channel on RUclips
I didn’t know this existed until today, and I am awed that it met enough success for two runs. The storm was fantastic.
I don't know how I missed knowing about this show. The "Born to be Together" ballad had some promise, but didn't quite take off? June Angela as Mariko, came from TV (The Electric Company) and went back, no more Broadway. She's also an audio book narrator.
WOW! THIS is a true find!! There is nothing on the internet about this show. Please post more if you have it! Thank you for this!
I had been looking for anything about this show forever!!! I remember seeing the ads for it in the New York Times back in the day. I had wanted to hear the full score as Paul Chihara had written the score for the James Clavell mini-series Noble House, and then wrote this. I had always loved the original novel and mini-series of Shogun, so a musical was something I really wanted to see.
Thanks for this. Although, I know Philip Casnoff was Freddy in Chess (and I had that on vinyl once upon a time)...he will always be Elkanah Bent in the North and South miniseries trilogy with Patrick Swayze, a complete scumbag in that story!
This may be one of the few flops I’ve never seen footage of prior to today. I can remember seeing the oversized poster in the lounge area of the Marquis on what unintentionally became their very own “wall of shame” of all the many flops that had played there over the years. I’m not sure if I’m making this up or if I really remember reading this - but didn’t Casnoff get the role because they fired Peter Karrie prior to opening in New York? It’s hell getting older…
This was really interesting to see and hear - as always Spiderwoman thank you for all you do!!!
Yes, Casnoff replaced Karrie prior to Broadway.
Been looking for this! Thank you!!!
I believe Casnoff replaced Peter Karrie (another -brief - Freddie Trumper in Chess, albeit the London production) when the show moved to Broadway.
Is there anywhere that I can find the rest/more of the footage from this recording? I’ve recently gotten into Shōgun due to the show on Hulu and, as a former theatre kid, I would love to see more of this adaptation even if it was a flop.
SHOGUN!! I'm obsessed with this shows lore thank you so much for sharing!!
Yep, same. One of the first things I saw when I moved to New York. Didn't remember a minute of it.
Do you have any footage from Time - The Musical??
Saw it, but have no video footage.
Omgggggggg I’ve been looking for clips for this for AGES
Thank you for posting! I absolutely adored this show (flaws & all) when I saw it.
MORE!!!!
