On hiding license plates in car ads: I hear, in the UK, people justify hiding plates out of fear of them getting cloned: then someone can use a clone of the plate on a car of the same model and not care about speeding and parking fines. People report getting a speeding and parking tickets from places on the other side of the country they've never gone to. I've seen many discussions about this... but on the other hand, what's there stopping a scammer from taking a few photos of a car parked on the street?
What would be the reason for someone wanting to clone plates for this purpose searching for plates in for sale ads? Wouldn’t it be easier to just go outside and grab one from the vehicles that are everywhere you look?
You are right some people do that here in the u.k. They are wasting their time though. Pointless for the reasons listed here. Also showing your plate let's UK buyers look at the MOT history so is far better idea if you want to sell your car and look like a good owner as the guys said in the pod
@@somenygaard If you nick one off a car, it will get replaced, it might even get replaced by a different one. If you just copy one, there will surely be a car behind the plate, which will be recognised by toll, speeding and ulez cameras.
The scam works better if you clone a plate of a car that's the same model, colour and close to the same year. So it's much quicker and easier to just search online. It's such a serious problem in Australia that no online ads for dealers show plates.
I'm a mechanic by trade and that's what I have been doing for 13 years. I recently purchased a GTR r35 that was wrapped white. I rewrapped it millennium jade with zero experience. I had to redo a couple of the panels. But with time and patience you can do it. It's an art form for sure. I agree you should always have wrapped removed before buying a car. But I knew I was going to wrap this car before I bought it and you can use that as a bargaining chip to lower the price if the seller doesn't want to remove it.

Regarding the classics in the UAE: The laws are ridiculously strict about driving a classic car, where you're limited by annual mileage depending on which category/year your vintage car falls under. With that being said, there are a ton of classic car clubs that meet regularly when the weather is nice (just gotta watch the mileage).
The Lexus Sc300 was my first car and I remember being surprised Doug hadnt reviewed one. I purchased a Black 1997 in 2018 for 3500. I've always felt the same about the license plate. When I sell a vehicle, I make sure it's clean and all the stuff I have for it goes with it. It's amazing to me when I'm looking for a vehicle that words like "no issues", "perfect", and "very clean" have a COMPLETELY different meaning to me than they do for them. Guy was selling a motorcycle with "no issues" that had the fairings put on with zip ties. I popped open the fuel tank and there was corrosion inside the lid. I drove an 1.5hrs to see the bike only to find out the person didn't even have a title for it and they were selling it for someone else. After hearing that, I walked. GM loved their plastic lug nut covers.
As the owner of a '94 Lexus SC300 (modified) I was interested in the discussion of the SC series. The SC300 & SC400 were essentially the same year Toyota Supra in a tuxedo. The basic chassis, suspension type and engine (SC300) were the same as the Supra. I have the factory brochure on the 300/400. In '94 you could get a SC400 with V8 and auto transmission (only). The SC300 was available with the Toyota JZ6 with either auto or manual transmission. The official statistics showed identical 0-60 times for the V8/auto and the I6/manual. My SC300 has the 5-speed manual. I felt the stock performance was anemic. Of course, since it had a JZ6 many performance options were/are available. After purchasing the car used I made a number of mods. Most notably the engine was turbocharged, yielding 336 RWHP. The vehicle was also lowered 1 inch and both 18" and 20" aftermarket wheels mounted (currently on the 20's). Some Supra fans who have been priced out of that market are starting to recognize the mechanical similarity between the two. The SC430 has none of that. My local auto shop employees opined that my SC300 is likely worth about $15,000.
I sold my 97, which is arguably the best year for only 2k in 2019. It needed at least 4k in work for it to be a great driver but I still kick myself. There was a manual 95 for sale when I sold mine and I contemplated buying it and keeping mine but I was 19 and couldn't afford the maintenance on both.
@@renypayne11 There was no manual option in '97. That option was discontinued prior to the model end. I looked up the import numbers on '94 models like mine with a manual and it was about 1,300 units for the entire U.S.
@avsystem3142 Mine wasn't a manual I was saying I saw a 95 manual for sale. The last year for manual was 97 though since it was the last year with the original powertrain. In 98 they gave the 2jz and 1uz vvti and took away the manual. The Sc400 was even given a 5 speed automatic. It's a common misconception that the 97 didn't come with a manual because it got the facelift
44:23 Agreed the 997.1 Turbo is a let down. I always wanted a turbo 911 and came from AWD Mitsubishis so this was my dream car. Not only was mine unreliable, but worse the performance was a let down. There is a significant delay in the e-throttle that makes it feel unresponsive. The AWD is unnecessary in a rear engine car at its horsepower level and just adds weight and numbness. I gave my brother-in-law a ride and he wasn't impressed with the power. Took it to a small road course and its times were disappointing. For anybody debating a 997.1 Turbo get a RWD, manual 991.2. Please do full screen shots of the cars you are talking about. You are talking about the cars and showing a picture of your computer screen from a perspective of someone looking at a small screen through a smaller screen 😂. It’s just ridiculous.
There definitely are classic cars in the UAE, mostly imports from the USA and Japan. I've met local collectors who owned 20, 30 and even 40 classics each, mostly muscle cars from the 60/70s, old pick up trucks and a few Nissan (240z is the most common classic car here). But it's true that you don't see them around town much; you need to go to cars & coffee (for example at Flat12) or meet the owners.
Kennan, the car you want is a dirt-cheap vehicle just for your commute, thus saving needless wear, etc. on your BMW (or worrying about it getting up to temperature). Even a Nissan Leaf would be a good buy. Yes, it's a garbage car, but not if you're only using it for a short, daily commute in traffic. (And you'll appreciate an automatic in this instance.)
48:10 Doug mentioning that he saw a lot of Teslas in Europe but otherwise not many American Cars. As a German, i can tell you that since Ford started selling Mustang GTs over here officially, i see them almost everyday on the Autobahn. I'm pretty sure if Dodge etc would start selling here officially you'd see a lot of them too. But yeah otherwise, most American Cars you gotta import, which almost doubles the Price sadly. Like a Corvette C7 or C8 even used cost double of what they cost in the USA. You're then better off buying a used Audi R8 etc. Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
49:20 Gemballa Mirage GT imho doesnt look as bad as most other Gemballa Creations. Some years ago i saw the Gemballa MIG-U1 in Monaco. Now that is heinous Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
Not while selling but i have gripes woth people who cover their vins at like car shows and stuff, it is literally a number to identify your car and some of the options it doesn’t identify you. Every car has a vin required by law the only thing i think when you cover it is either you’re a weirdo or your car is stolen.
18:03 That 575M Maranello is so stunning and it sparked an interest in me! 🤩 I hope the most pressing question I posted in the communities tab will be discussed in the next podcast. For context, I asked which among the two Ferraris (360 Modena versus 575M Maranello) would be the better used-car purchase in terms of price, driving/ownership experience and ease of maintenance.
The deal with the Bentley Continental GTs IMO is that they made the ton of them and the service and parts cost too much. It’s like double of CL65 AMG, I believe. So it’s not an enthusiast’s or a collector’s choice, plus running costs are high. Same deal with Porsche Panamera.
I think wraps got a bad name from all the people that go with extremely flashy style ones on BMW i8s and Teslas. I had my Volvo S60 T6 wrapped to a color very similar to Polestar blue and almost no one ever knew it was wrapped since it was very close to an OEM color
The thing about well outfitted sprinters is that RVs are and always have been tremendously expensive. So a well done sprinter that's "move in" ready for an individual or a couple will be attractive.
Wraps are a good way to protect the car while looking good and different. The next step is colored PPF. Wich is essentialy a wrap film that usualy is transluscent, but can be colored and will the paint a lot more AND some can "self heal" with the heat from the sun
Another episode of Doug & The “Yes”Men: Filippo: do NOT blur your license plate it’s so bad Doug: I actually like that Filippo: when it’s done well it’s so great Nice recovery 😂
As a ski bum the real reason to get a 4WD Sprinter or van isn't for offroading it's so you don't have to fuss with chains! If you have Sprinter money you have don't-sully-my-hands-with-cold-bits-of-metal-money and MBZ can make bank.
The interesting thing about the hero question is that one of the most popular answers to is typically Countach (thanks in part to Top Gear). But it didn't come up here, and Doug seems to love it while acknowledging that the driving experience isn't that great. I guess it's all about expectations - he knew going in that it didn't drive like his Carrera GT, and that was ok.
I actually had a 2008 Ford Focus. Bought it brand new for 16k or so. Sold it with 196k on it. Only replaced wearable parts. Brakes and rotors 2x, spark plugs once, fuel filter once, tires and fluids.
Surprised he didn’t mention that the reason they are mostly all in GT Silver Metallic, because it was a special color that came out for the Carrera GT. So most dealers just played it safe and ordered it in that silver.
We still love our sprinter from Storyteller Overland. Just took it out this past weekend. I'd argue it's one of the best builds for money I paid for it in 2021. It definitely had slowed down but there are plenty out there. We were in the New Mexico National Forests overlanding in it. Probably has seen more offroad than what doug thinks he offroads in his Land Cruiser or what he us going to do in his new Sequoia :)
Leaf had a problem that Nissan just couldnt commit. I have no idea why Japanese manufacturers have that attitude quite often but then made EV with no battery cooling, saw that it is a problem and then didnt add cooling for next 8 years and I think still dont have cooling in every version, only prime plus or whatever. I would argue it gave a way for Tesla but I dont know enough about US market.
@@drunkenhobo5039 Well, Honda/Toyota did, which may have held back infrastructure. But, Nissan could have just made another Leaf except liquid-cooled and not hideous. Instead they decided to move into the most popular segment, crossovers, but alas they can't compete there.
@@concinnus You say that but the Nissan Qashqai has been the second most popular car in the UK for the past decade. So they really appealed in one market at least.
It would be cool if they zoomed in on the cars they are highlighting. I watch these episodes on my phone and have a hard time seeing what car they are talking about.
Doug is spot on about wraps. I'm a Porsche snob and whenever I see a non-GT 911 in a bold color I always check the VIN to see if the color is actually genuine from the factory. Nine times out of 10, it's a wrap with black or silver paint underneath.
The covering license plates debate reminds me of Doug's RCF review and it's heinous blur job on the plate, among other things that make that video infamous and iconic. IYKYK.
I've had 20 cars, four 4Runners, two LX 450s, two Wranglers, three Grand Cherokees. I really liked my 2021 Nissan Armada. It's like 90% of a Toyota Land Cruiser for 70% of the price.
It's great watching these being a 37 year old who grew up in similar time/class as these guys. I get ALL the references and when Filippo talks about facelifted 1st gen Focus being terrible but not as bad as those GM Minivans that were mediocre in the late 90s only to be made terrible and borderline offensive by the mid 00's after those hideous "crossover" facelifts.
I'm a little torn on wraps. I think the outlandish or super unique colored wraps will go away, but just the general idea of wrapping to easily and somewhat cheaply change the color of your car is here to stay. I don't know why anyone would paint a car at all unless they planned on keeping it for a very long time. For me, I like buying used cars, but I only like certain colors, so instead of narrowing down my search I can just buy the model I want and then wrap it. Since I plan on selling it later it preserves the original paint and resale value of the car, an added bonus.
My parents have a ‘05 Monterey and even with 260,000 miles on it that thing has been extremely reliable. It also has heated and cooled seats with power lift gate and doors which my ‘04 Odyssey didn’t have. I don’t like that small steering wheel compared to my ‘04 ML350 or ‘97 Volvo 850 wagon lol
Doug it would be a really interesting video to review a nice example of an original LEAF. Maybe compare it to more modern EVs to show how things have progressed in the last decade and a half
I've actually been thinking about those.SC430's lately. It's not a sports car, it is a grand touring convertible. I kind of want one and to slap an exhaust on it lol.
I work with a guy who wrapped his (otherwise unmodified) Genesis Coupe himself over a few months after watching some RUclips videos, and it looks professional.
Doug can we have a video where you express your outlook on the future of the car market. Is China gonna take over, is it gonna be EV, Hybrid or ICE dominated? I would love to hear your thinking on this topic!
In '92 I was a car valet in a very upscale restaurant. I drove all of the nicest cars from that era from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Rolls, Bentleys etc. The SC300 was the smoothest and best to drive of any of them. Never owned one, and they look dated to me now, but they were King in the early 90's. Just saying.
They should've mentioned the prices on the rare 5 speed sc300s. That would be something to review, since those are about the only ones that bring money since they 3900.
Was gonna say the AMG GT. I just bought a GTS about a month ago. It’s so much car for the money. And you never see them around. People haven’t even heard about them. Mid front engine, transmission in the back 53/47 weight distribution. true dual clutch trans. V8 twin truth 500+hp. For $60-$70k. Crazy good deal. I paid $62k for mine. MSRP in 2016 was $143k. They are absolutely a “super car”
Why the hate for the Ford Focus? I get that it's not great, but I'm sure it's way better then practically any econobox from the 80's, 90's, or early 2000's.

Thank you for discussing the ' hiding your license plate in pictures' issue. That's always been a pet peeve of mine as well.
So we had an Uplander growing up and it was super reliable, even more so than the Honda Odyssey we had later on. Both 2007 model year too.
Wraps typically cost between 3-5k for a sports car. 10k is ALOT. Then again, maybe thats the California premium.
I was thinking the same, I'm no expert but 10k!
Now that is heinous
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
Not while selling but i have gripes woth people who cover their vins at like car shows and stuff, it is literally a number to identify your car and some of the options it doesn’t identify you. Every car has a vin required by law the only thing i think when you cover it is either you’re a weirdo or your car is stolen.
Audio fixed and screen sharing!!! Massive improvements, good job guys.
Love this pod cracks me up and yall are awesome 😂 love that talk he’s the screen a lot to visualize
Doug's driving playlist activated. Barcelona in particular is a banger. Definite late summer days open road vibes.
Just found my new favorite podcast to listen to at work
I think wraps got a bad name from all the people that go with extremely flashy style ones on BMW i8s and Teslas. I had my Volvo S60 T6 wrapped to a color very similar to Polestar blue and almost no one ever knew it was wrapped since it was very close to an OEM color
I drove my granparents' 1st gen Windstar for a few years when I was in college. That thing was great!
The thing about well outfitted sprinters is that RVs are and always have been tremendously expensive. So a well done sprinter that's "move in" ready for an individual or a couple will be attractive.
I like when Doug talks about cheap cars.
Wraps are a good way to protect the car while looking good and different. The next step is colored PPF. Wich is essentialy a wrap film that usualy is transluscent, but can be colored and will the paint a lot more AND some can "self heal" with the heat from the sun
Near the end in the Nissan discussion and you guys saying saying they haven’t made a good car in 15 years or whatever. GTR?
Another episode of Doug & The “Yes”Men:
Filippo: do NOT blur your license plate it’s so bad
Doug: I actually like that
Filippo: when it’s done well it’s so great
Nice recovery 😂
the combined 3 have the testosterone levels of a 40 year old single mother
Awh I had a 2011 Ford Focus! I think it was the SES. Very simple car. It had Bluetooth and a good sound system.
Probably has seen more offroad than what doug thinks he offroads in his Land Cruiser or what he us going to do in his new Sequoia :)
i plastidip the bumpers, fender flares and grille on my 1998 Explorer, it looks great
Leaf had a problem that Nissan just couldnt commit.
Given the price bracket, they paved the way for the Bolt more than for Tesla (except used Telsas).
The Japanese were still wanting to push hydrogen for some reason. So that likely delayed any BEV development.
@@drunkenhobo5039 That's a hybrid, not a BEV. The Ariya is not competitive.
Doug looking at the camera instead of his co-host is peak Doug.
Discovering new great songs. Who the hell would have guessed this coming from Doug. Nice!
Then after you figure out wrap or factory paint what do you do with this knowledge?
And this is why no one likes Porsche people. Can’t stop yourself from being a freak 😂
If the wrap is that good you have to check the VIN to see if it's paint then that's a win for the wrap.
The covering license plates debate reminds me of Doug's RCF review and it's heinous blur job on the plate, among other things that make that video infamous and iconic. IYKYK.
FYI the BRDC is the British Racing Drivers Club
16:13 remember, back then you could get a Focus with power front windows and CRANK rear windows 😂
I've had 20 cars, four 4Runners, two LX 450s, two Wranglers, three Grand Cherokees. I really liked my 2021 Nissan Armada. It's like 90% of a Toyota Land Cruiser for 70% of the price.
Doug knows literally every car
I LOVE how tip is a derogatory term. True enthusiasts!
23:15 Also waiting for a Doug review of the RSX Type S 👍
What is this podcast? How to post your car on cars and bids?
Finally gotten over the Cybertruck prices - time off must've put it in perspective!
Before you wrap a car, always thoroughly document, by means of photography, the original paint before putting on a wrap.
I don´t know where they´re going but from Milan to Monaco one does not go through Switzerland...
Doug it would be a really interesting video to review a nice example of an original LEAF. Maybe compare it to more modern EVs to show how things have progressed in the last decade and a half
If you dont have a bongo friendie you have a bongo enemy 💀😂
Love the pod, so great
While your vehicle is being wrapped, have the shop take pictures of the process and the paint.
I've actually been thinking about those.SC430's lately. It's not a sports car, it is a grand touring convertible. I kind of want one and to slap an exhaust on it lol.
I have seen both a Leaf and an Ariya in the last two days. That says a lot about my neighborhood.
Wrap shops collectively dislike this video.
59:00 I just saw an Emirati rocking a third gen caprice.
Pretty funny license plate talk
nice video.thanks doug❤❤
I get the Nissan hate but honestly my last two rental cars were a new Camry and a new Altima. I got to admit the Altima was much better to drive.
Also, about vintage cars in the Middle East: the heat is tough on old cars.
THE 10 MINUTE VERSION OF ALL TOO WELL, ARE YOU KIDDING ME DOUG?!
Doug is the type of guy who, when asked to dress up for Halloween, comes wearing a tie and says, "I'm business casual!"
I was seriously worried that they won't post today, as soon as I got the notification 📣 watching
The Ford Windstar was one of Fords most recalled vehicles in history! Even more than GM's!
They should've mentioned the prices on the rare 5 speed sc300s. That would be something to review, since those are about the only ones that bring money since they 3900.
Doug love the content
Doug is the type of guy to read Pitchfork reviews.
there are probably 3 undervalued supercars going around right now
1. Evora
2.Amg gt
3.Carrera 4s
Was gonna say the AMG GT. I just bought a GTS about a month ago. It’s so much car for the money. And you never see them around. People haven’t even heard about them. Mid front engine, transmission in the back 53/47 weight distribution. true dual clutch trans. V8 twin truth 500+hp. For $60-$70k. Crazy good deal. I paid $62k for mine. MSRP in 2016 was $143k. They are absolutely a “super car”
Dont think Evora has ever been a super car. Its main competitor is the Cayman GTS.
10 grand is a solid paint job in most cities.
Why the hate for the Ford Focus? I get that it's not great, but I'm sure it's way better then practically any econobox from the 80's, 90's, or early 2000's.
The first gen was good the second gen play uglied it up
Timestamps and chapters seem to be the last episode’s
So sad to hear Doug be scared to literally just say he loves America. Liberal, republican, doesn’t matter. Everyone should say this.
Thisss is my Carrera GT that I just plasti-dipped.
The joke about electricity in Italy was good
Doug, Doug, Doug... Your Ford GT was made by Multimatic in Ontario, Canada. Not America! Lol
Nope. The 2nd gen was made in Canada. The 05 was made alongside the Thunderbird in Wixom, MI
@@NickM-qi4sq I stand corrected good sir! Assembly at Mayflower vehicles in Ohio, painted at Saleen facility in Troy, Michigan Engine built in Romeo, Michigan and final build at Wixom.
Obsessed with the CGT, why not a long format CGT film? I’d watch.
Doug can you make a video about buying a used car and the process you go through for a novice ?!
Wtb: wrapped Model 3 with plasti dipped wheels. Will pay extra if listing photos cover license plate with a rag.
