    What is a Barrel Hinge?
    Barrel hinges are an excellent choice when you don’t want the woodworking hardware showing on the outside of the finished piece. For clean lines and simplicity, barrel hinges are perfect. The drawback to barrel hinges is that they are trickier to install than standard hinges.
    Installing a Barrel Hinge
    When you learned how to build cabinets, you also learned how to install standard hinges. It’s time to learn something new!
    There are several things to remember when you’re working with barrel hinges. First, they come in a variety of sizes and the sizes are metric. You absolutely must drill an exact-match metric-size hole for a barrel hinge. And, those holes must be correctly located or the hinge won’t operate properly. Meticulous layout is a must because there’s no room for adjustment after the holes are drilled. Take your time marking and measuring to make sure everything is aligned correctly before you drill.
    Insider’s View
    Watch as we show you close-up how the unique barrel hinge mechanism, that includes a slotted screw inside the barrel, locks the hinge into the predrilled hole - it’s ingenious!

    "Installing Barrel HInges" video should show how to put this on a project. Saying "You better drill the holes right or you are screwed" is not very helpful.

    I hate when the craftsman doesn’t explain how to actually install the item. I agree with the other comments. Video not helpful at all

    Garbage video. Didn't show anything about actually installing them. Just gave a few pointers.

    I can see that the door that is aready on the box @1:28 has a gap at the bottom and tight at the top. Maybe it is camera angle, or maybe it was not installed correctly.

    Excellent. Thank-you for coming back. I managed to basically wriggle it out and brute force worked in the end!

    I must be in a real minority here. The "barrel hinges" portrayed in this video ... in my own, honest opinion (!) .... are crap!! In first place ... they are NOT "hidden" (takes an install bore the size almost ... of a real "barrel"!!!) and two ... are ugly as sin when installed. I don't understand it ... and maybe the ones I use are no good (I've been using them ... only .... for three years and have had no issues, no failures!) or don't meet some spec ... I don't know. BUT .... there is another "barrel hinge" (I guess that's what you'd call them! That's how they're listed on Amzn.) that NO one appears (that I can find here) to have shown and told how to install ... !!! They require bores much, much smaller than these things do (no. 10 drill) .... and almost literally DO disappear once properly installed. The hinges I refer to ... appear to be nothing but about a one-inch or one and an eighth long bit of brass rod, with holding grooves about the perimeter of each end for some adhesive ... and with a steel, or brass pin through the center to form a "hinge". I paid a machine shop a hundred bucks to make me (my drawings) a drilling jig out of stainless bar stock and oak .... and I get 100% perfect matching bores for the hinges .... in the top, and in the bottom/box back wall. Like I said .... the strange thing for me, is that no one else appears the slightest bit interested ... !! Yet, the installed job ... has come out beautifully every time ... AND ... most of all ... REALLY is truly (almost) hidden ... disappears (almost) when done. Generally, looks like three or four B-Bs in the hinged seam of the top/box!!) Just wish I knew why no one seems interested enough to post a video about them.

      Hello Great Question!
      Check the instructions in the hardware that you purchase, as it should provide details on placement for that particular hinge.

  • @HMNdhlovu

    Hi. Great insight thanks! I have removed the pressure screw but the barrel is still stuck in the hole. Any tips for getting it out? Just brute force?

    • @Wwgoa
      @Wwgoa  10 месяцев назад

      Sometimes (unfortunately) people put a drop of glue in the bottom of the hole before the barrel goes in. It’s also possible that even though you backed out the screw the halves of the barrel didn’t relax. You could try working something small like an eyeglass screwdriver alongside the barrel to see if you can encourage it to relax, or pop it loose.
