When installing tiny brass screws, it's always a good plan both to pre-drill (as you said) and also tap the hole with a steel screw. As you mention, breaking the brass screw is unrecoverable.
I think I understand about the installation of the hinges. You move them back a hair to accommodate the arc of the box lid. Right? Also I have broken a few brass screws. Some manuf. include a steel screw to use to cut the threads in the wood before using the brass.
With the amount of work you are doing you have an increased risk of misalignment. I have built many boxes and find it is worth the time to build a jig, that way you save time and get consistant results.
Hello, and thanks for the video. Hope you can answer a quick question. I'm using the same hinges (8mm SOSS -- BH084) for a jewelry box. At about 1:48 into your video you mention # 2 screws; then you discuss pre-drilling holes for these screws. If I understand you correctly, you drill two such holes per barrel. Although there is a screw already in place in each of the barrels of the hinges I own, there is nothing in the instructions that talks about drilling holes for these screws. Nor is mention made of using an 8.2 mm bit. (The instructions say to drill an 8mm hole. That's all.) Can you help me by providing a little summary of the critical points you make in your video? Which # 2 screws do you mean? Is there one screw per barrel? Is an 8.2 mm essential, or can an 8 mm bit suffice? Thanks for taking the time to respond.
Hi jihhwood - It is possible the hinge design has changed since this video was made so I would follow the directions with your hinges. The larger SOSS hinges have the wedge action built in to the hinge by tightening a single screw in the hinge itself. If they have incorporated this feature into the smaller hinge designs, that is a major improvement. The small hinges I used in the video had two half moon type slots in the edges where screws would wedge the hinge in place. The directions I had called for an 8.2mm hole. I predrilled since the mesquite was hard and I still broke screws. You may not need to predrill using softer woods. As I recall, the 8mm hole was a very tight fit but it would go in with persuasion somewhat like a press fit. It could be pried out. Hope this helps,Steve
The magnets are just plain 1/8" rare earth magnets (not specific to jewelry). I think I purchased these from Lee Valley and they are fairly inexpensive.

Thank you. Soon to be making some boxes with barrel hinges. Appreciate the comments and advice. Nice little rare earth magnets also.

Beautifully done! (You might want to invest in the correct size drill and save yourself the frustration of itzy bitzy screws)

Thanks for the tips.

ExtremeWoodworker Thanks very much for responding to my question. I've ordered an 8.2mm bit, snd I'm hoping that will do the trick!
Are those magnet clasps jewelery making ones?
The magnets are just plain 1/8" rare earth magnets (not specific to jewelry). I think I purchased these from Lee Valley and they are fairly inexpensive.
What was the name of the magnets that you used in the box?
Hi Ronald, these were rare earth magnets purchased from Lee Valley. Steve
You should visit woodprix website if you would like to make it by yourself I think.
