How To Hinge a Lid | The Toolbox Project #12
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 ноя 2024
- In this video, I’ll show you how to hinge the lid on the toolbox. This is a slightly different installation to what is done traditionally. Because with these hinges, we’re aiming to make the lid stop at 95 degrees, without the aid of any additional mechanisms.
As always, if you need more information on this stage or would like to know how to do this by hand, take a look at the supporting resources below.

WHAT IS THE FREE ONLINE WOODWORKING SCHOOL?
When designing the online course, Matt wanted to make it as close as possible to his own experience learning at Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford. Primarily, by providing a structured course that anyone can follow, without having to find their own way through an arbitrary list of videos on RUclips.

I enjoyed the problem solving section of this video the most, really cool to see your entire process. Thanks for sharing.
I really learned something helpful in this video. The misalignment of the hing and how to fix was really good.
You are the only seriously capable carpenter I have found on RUclips today of countering a dozen other crappy 'professionals' spreading lots of simple erratic methods and inconscient of their fails popping up all over.
I had almost given up when I found You. Very glad to follow Your series without getting disturbed by all errors displayed by those other fakes and the superlative comments from their adoring hapless fanbase.
Matt, after a couple of viewing of this specific video, I was successful in using less expensive hinges to finish a wedding box for cards. I was really frustrated with attempts to locate reasonably priced stop hinges online; they are out there but $$$ pricy. And fit was so good with the first pilot holes (only from your guidance, not from my skill) my box was about 10x16x5" I'll let you figure the metric conversion. Thanks for your extremely clear instructions in this video, still helping a couple of years down the road.
A trully helpful masterclass about this topic. Thanks and cheers from Argentina!
I like the way you shared adjustment of hinges with screw elimination Nice work Matt.
This is one of the best videos I've seen on how to do by hand .
I’m so pleased to have found your generous instruction. Truly a pleasure. Thank you Sir!
The video on cleaning up hinges made me go buy so cheap ones from my local. They needed a lot of work. Now sitting in a box waiting for a project like this.
Hi Matt, extremely impressive tutorial. You have shown several of the problems I've faced and how to fix them - great stuff, cheers bud!
Just getting to this stage, great series Matt 👍
02:32 thanks men, I was looking at this setup for days!
Excellent work always learn something sincerely thank you
Thanks for the video. I want to change a storage ottoman lid to open with hinges and lifts.
That was a really good video and precisely what I needed to finally fasten the lid
.You taught me how to do it perfectly,,, Thank you sir, you are amazing 🌹
Piano hinge installations; lucky me, I used scotch magic tape, centered the length at the middle of the two edges, screwed two screws on either side of hinge drilled, screwed and it worked
Seriously superb instructional video. Wow and THANKS!
Very good explanation. Thank you
the moment you start whittling oak into tiny dowels is the moment I call it a day and come back tomorrow :)
You should be a surgeon 😮
I've finally found the video which shows how to correct hinge installation issues. The most common problem I've had when installing butt hinges on boxes is that after the hinge mortises have been carved out, the lid may have slight misalignment when closed. You show how to find the offending screw and how to fix the problem. Videos that only show a perfect installation are not quite as helpful as your video. Thanks, and I plan to watch the rest of your hinge videos, as I'm sure I will take away a pearl of knowledge!
I see , I am not the only person having hinge troubles. My lids won't close or stay closed. Obviously I'm doing something wrong or not doing it right. I'm that lost. Lol.
Super sir
Just curious as to why you didn't use a Self-centering drill bit to drill the hinge holes???
thanks.....good work
Is that the coolest COPING SAW!!! I ever seen. Wanr one, where did you get it. I love saws like most women love shoes.
Feeling super stupid. Never thought of inside mounting. Me so stupid.
Well at least now I can cover up my mistake
You are the best) 👍🏻
How do you fix your lid if it dies have a wobble?
Really loving this series, Matt. I’m slowly working my way through the videos and then will eventually buy the pack to make it.
Also, just curious what you think about squeezing the leaves together in a vice so there’s no gap and I’ve also seen a self-centring drill bit that I’ve seen some cabinet makers use on their hinges. Might be worth a try. What do you think? Thanks.
Is there a way to tighten a hinge so that the lid can stop at an angle? or an existing hinge that does that already?
Thinking of using this design of box as a toy box for my son, does anyone know of some soft close hinges that might work well on this design?
Mucha elocuencia!
Recuerde que explica más una imagen y que muchos en su audiencia no hablamos inglés.
Want the lid of the box to open "left" and "Right" like a domitic refrigator can open eithe rway
Just stumbled on your channel. Im a novice at DIY but think your channel should have another few zero;s on the subs number, Manifesting this for you. It will happen.
Where is the other tutorial? Ok how to tune the hinges up?
Matt, the Brusso hinges are lovely, but quite on the pricey side. Having said that, the cheap hinges are just that, cheap.
Is there anyone manufacturing middle of the road hinges for a middle of the road price that you know of, worldwide or in the US?
Horton brasses are usually cheaper than Brusso but are both high-end USA-made. I've used both and am happy with both plus Horton has a better selection of colors.
