      After reading about the celts sure they were more of cultural group than a genetic groups. The celts in Turkey and the celts in Scotland likely had almost no genetic relation.
      Most researchers believe it was a spreading culture mixed with scattered conquests that didn’t fundamentally change the genetic makeup of the areas it reached.
      And the Celts had vast culturally diversity internally it’s very unlikely 75% of them ever died, just were assimilated into another culture and mixed genetically again with invading barbarians.

    My Father comes from Serbia from the City of Nis. Nis has a VERY LONG history and is maybe the oldest Town in Europe. It is said the Town has been established 6000 BC!!!! The Celts were the inhabitans and they called Nis back then Navissos. Their Druids called this place "Elbentaal" which means Valley of the Elves because it was a place that was so beautiful that the Celts thought some kind of magic is needed to make this place so beautiful. The Family of my Fathers side is also a long one (over 180 years with proven evidence in the Citys Archive) and there were drawings of the forest which my long Grandfather painted it and i can see the beauty of the Forests which he painted. I saw them too of course (3 years ago which also was the last time ive been in nis) and i can understand why the Druids called it elbentaal. I never thought that Nis or even the Balkans had anything to do with Celts but DAMN i almost belive that the Celts were the next oldest race of the Homo Sapiens of Europe and that we all originate from them.

    Never thought of a Confederation of the Rhine scenario in Celtic Gaul. Fascinating prospect. A question though, how would Carthage manage to conquer Ptolemaic Egypt and go all the way to Abyssinia?? I guess maybe a stratagem of divide and conquer: artificially increase tension between the native Copts and the Greek colonists, then swoop in to take advantage if this time of weakness. Only thing I can think of. And why would an exult Carthage go all the way to Abyssinia, or even be able to? And why would Rome take direct control of such far away lands instead of setting up puppet kings and vassal birder states , kind of like what they did in the Caucus and in Arabia (the latter allowing for a future Islam to be able to conquer things so swiftly after being forcibly unified by a single religion)?

    I don't like how uncultured and barbaric this makes the Kilts sound.
    "No technological development"
    Like actually what? Keltoi introduced the Roman's to chainmail. They invented soap (Roman's were using vinegar and -urine- to bathe). A carnyx is crafted from different metals made to resemble the bone, plates and organs of a boar's head so it can sound as realistic as possible when played.
    So many issues I had with this video's stance (mainly it seems they think it'd be a miracle they would've been able to unify whatsoever), but the lack of technology sh*t lost me.
    Just because they didn't build seige machines didn't mean their chariots weren't pieces of art.

    • @igoriouspitchpuckington1594
      @igoriouspitchpuckington1594 3 года назад

      Not only this, but to assume that Celts would abandon their own form of governance because (obviously) Roman and Greecian systems were blatantly so much better says a lot about the tone this video essay is giving off.
      Like, the Greco-Romans were much better at enforcing themselves and their governments on other civilizations, but just because they're better at conquering doesn't mean it's a better system.
      And yes, warfare has always been a part of the spread of humanity, without a doubt. But until only a few thousand years ago, war was generally between warriors, not against whole-ass civilizations. You wanted to beat their army, so you can take over their territory. (In their minds) if you kill all their people, then you have to import your own farmers to work their land too. So typically in ye olden times it's not good to be known as the dickhead king who slaughters errbody, because then you give everyone else a common enemy to unite against. A very old system of checks and balances.
      This isn't fully applicable in the modern day, but we can learn from it to create a better system than G-R punitive "justice". Instead of a system based on punishing offenders, we could have a system geared towards restoring the Peace of the Land.
      Anyone is allowed free movement and hospitality so long as they never use enforcement to justify themselves (including forceful speech). The only justification for force is Counter-Force.

    that was a Celtic empire, or the gallic empire. . The Gallic Empire (Latin: Imperium Galliarum) or the Gallic Roman Empire are names used in modern historiography for a breakaway part of the Roman Empire that functioned de facto as a separate state from 260 to 274.It originated during the Crisis of the Third Century, when a series of Roman military leaders and aristocrats declared themselves emperors and took control of Gaul and adjacent provinces without attempting to conquer Italy or otherwise seize the central Roman administrative apparatus.
    It was established by Postumus in 260 in the wake of barbarian invasions and instability in Rome, and at its height included the territories of Germania, Gaul, Britannia, and (for a time) Hispania. After Postumus' assassination in 268 it lost much of its territory, but continued under a number of emperors and usurpers. It was retaken by Roman emperor Aurelian after the Battle of Châlons in 274.

    Gaul and Galicia are false friends, actually. Gaul is from a Germanic word for ‘foreigner’ (thus cognate to Wales; French likes to add a G to Germanic W, compare ‘war’ and _guerre_). The Latin name however, is Gallia, which is unrelated to the modern name, but may be related to Galicia. I'd like to see an explanation of the single L, though.

  • @khaganofturanistan8753
    @khaganofturanistan8753 5 лет назад +2

    Monsieur, this is an Interesting scenario, but with a LOT of issues.
    This is not intended to be rude or to hate on the creator of the Video, but is simply correcting or asking about what is wrong about this scenario.
    1. How did Rome simply "unite" the Gallic tribes? It is well known that Gallic Tribes (and celtic tribes in general) were not particularly all friendly to eachother. Another thing they aren't friendly to is outside influence. The only true unifier in Gallic History was Rome, when it decided to conquer the region. Why would they simply bend their knee to Rome, which, keep in mind, at this point is far more militarily incapable than it was in Caeser's time, and was already fighting a war that you yourself said they were losing. It is simply not possible for Rome to establish this Confederation at any point during the Punic Wars.
    2. How did Carthage conquer Egypt? That would be impossible. Carthage's Army was not capable enough to pull off such a feat. The Ptolemaic Dynasty had a very capable and strong Military Force at this point in history, and, most importantly, wasn't internally fractured (though killings happened inside of the family for it's existence, they were not as major and none actively fought actual battles to gain the throne, except notable examples) Carthage would have an exceedingly hard time entering Egypt, and an even harder time Conquering it. The map also shows Carthage as advancing as far south as Beja and the Kush. That's also impossible. It would be very hard to transport Carthaginian Supplies south to the Kush and Beja, especially as the Egyptians would not have given the Carthaginians the pleasure of bending their knee. There's simply no way Carthage conquers all of this.
    3. How does the "Gallic Confederation" stay united? Disregarding how impossible it is to form at this time, or, at any time, the Celts weren't a unified culture. The Celts were a group of cultures, such as how Germanics aren't a unified culture. The Celts wouldn't like being ruled by another Celt simply because "oh, they're celt. I'm also celt. nice.". Celts were constantly at eachothers throats. What is actually more likely is that an Alliance between non-incorporated Gallic Tribes and Germanic Tribes would form. This Alliance would be unlike anything seen before, and the already fairly disunited and unstable Confederation of Gaul would have a VERY hard time holding itself together and fighting a major war. (rome would also be of no help, with no roman holdings in gaul, roman senators and generals would see fit to wait for gaul to collapse, and then conquer regions within gaul for themselves. The romans acted in the interests of rome, even when allies were concerned)
    4. How did they conquer Britannia and Hibernia? There is no way that they would be able to conquer Britannia. The Romans had a very hard time, at the height of their power, holding Britain. It required 2 Legions, while all of Hispania only needed 1. They'd also not have the resources to take the two islands. An alliance similar to the prior mentioned one would likely also form. Gallic Ambitions in Britannia and Hibernia would be just that - ambitions, and not a possibility.
    5. Why would Celto-iberians want to join the Confederation? There was a significant difference in Culture and Language between Celts in Gaul, and Celts in Hispania, including RELIGIOUS differences. The Celts would be hard pressed trying to get another Celtic Culture to join their disunited, fractured state.
    6. How does Carthage conquer lands in the Arabian Peninsula and Ethiopia? This is genuinely getting to stupidly bad levels of fiction. Carthage does not have the military power required to pacify Ethiopia, especially as Ethiopia was a fairly civilised and well settled Empire at the time, and would have no troubles facing Carthage, which would suffer from supply problems and manpower issues, as well as the loyalty of their men being questionable at best. For Arabia? I do not believe I need to explain how it is bad. Carthage could never conquer even a moderately large Swath of Arabia. The Romans tried, and failed, at the height of their power.

      Agreed on your unification questions I would think instead of making one large Celtic Empire I would think Rome would make dozens of smaller Celtic kingdoms that would be easier to bully around if need be

    4:20 you disribe British Celts well(who on an island were frozen in time for 300), but not the Gauls which you make it seem like your talking about. 7:00 the celts invented maille, the Spatha, and the roman helmet and shield were based on Celtic ones. 10:21 before caersar proto-Orleans was the center of the druids. also Gaul had more men and gold then Italy at this point. 14:30 the gauls would have wons if they won alesia which could be if the german merc cav didnt breakthough the gallic line and/or the gallic cav charge them. 14:40 gallic pop pre rome was 8 mil after it was about 3mil

    Okay, I have some problems with this one.
    1) You have the technological relationships completely backwards, at least when it comes to weapons. Most of the traditional roman "kit" is not Italian. The iconic Imperial Gallic for example was based directly off of Gallic helmets. So was the earlier Coolus helmet. And the gladius hispaniensis was (as you can tell by the name) the weapon of Celtiberians initially. In fact, there's a high chance that the word gladius is a loanward from Italian celts (kladimos). A wealthy Celtic warrior during the time of Caesar would be better armed then a legionary. So the problem for the Celtic tribes of Gaul isn't inferior tech, but inferior mass manufacturing and weaker military philosophy.
    2) This is mostly based on Roman sources and doesn't account for archaeological evidence of high local organization. While never as advanced as Roman engineering, the celts did indeed construct roads, artificial islands, and bridges. Their failure was due to the small scale of their organization. At the same time, you are correct that they would unite in the face of huge threats.
    3) When you so say a radical change to their approach to Gaul, you mean an impossible one. Rome had client states in Gaul, yes. But the Roman's own cultural trauma involving the Gauls was as powerful as it was with Carthage. There is no world where the Romans would consider creating a unified Gallic nation because that would be an existential threat to Rome.
    4) You have misunderstood the entire character of the Carthaginian Empire. Carthage was a hegemonic merchant power, using it's military to expand influence and rarely to just hold territory. The Barca's are an exception. The Gaul's wouldn't feel threatened by the Carthaginians be A) Carthage wasn't stupid enough to attack Gaul in it's overstretched state and B) Because they wouldn't feel any kinship to the celtiberians or a few southern Gallic tribes.
    An improved version of this is the Gallic Wars uniting the Gauls, as it very nearly did. If it hadn't been Caesar leading the Romans and if he had made any major mistakes, Caesar's reputation would become that of Crassus. He united all Northern Gaul against an existential threat to their independence: Himself. The man boasted (and obviously he's exaggerating but it's pretty telling about his own personality) about killing two million gauls and specifically includes the civilians in that count. His campaigns in Gaul could have been enough to prove that Gaul needed to unite to face the Romans. And at that point, history is thrown on it's head. Imperial Rome will never have existed or would have taken a drastically different form. The Gauls become a powerful kingdom but are most likely overwhelmed by the Germanic and Hunnic invaders. Christianity stays in Southern Europe and the Middle-East if it spreads at all. Western Europe's culture becomes a celti-germanic mix and Rome simply becomes another ancient empire forgotten to time.

    Not quite the specific scenario I was hoping for, as I was wondering about the post Romano-Celts of Britain sucessfully repulsing the Angles/Saxons/Jutes and maintaining control of the isles. But I'll take it.

    • @000Dragon50000
      @000Dragon50000 2 года назад

      Honestly that scenario is almost impossible, after Boudica's rebellion fails, there just aren't enough celtic warriors in the isles left to repel the germanic tribes. That said, Boudica succeeding in her rebellion and driving out the romans, potentially asserting herself as queen of britain after that point, would probably mean the angles, saxons and jutes never try to invade the isles. They went for britain because it was fractured and weak after Rome exploited them for resources then abandoned them when defending them became too expensive.

      @@alishermukhametkali9230 well it would be mainly this, After McKinley's assassination, Anarchist factions would view this as an opportunity to revolt, trying to establish their own state.
      In response monopolies and other businesses feeling threatened would set up minature enclaves in major cities like New York and Chicago. Meanwhile wealthy southerners would see this national turmoil and establish a successor state to the CSA. Meanwhile in the U.S. Roosevelt is trying to maintain what is left, and retake the lost territories. Basically the root cause would be if anyone took advantage of the assassination.

    GAULS FOREVER!!! also the Gauls weren’t that behind technologically, after all they invented the ancestor of the gladius, scutum, imperial Gallic helm, and chainmail.
    P.S. the celtiberians likely didn’t see themselves as the same ethnicity as the Gauls, as they were culturally and genetically influenced by the Iberians. Not only this but their languages were unintelligible, and their religions had grown separate. Most scholars think that they were to first to diverge from other celts

    Isn't there evidence that the Celts came to Central Europe from Eastern anitolia and even further east and north from what is now Kazakhstan? That they may have been related to or even were the Scythians? I know in Armenian culture there are what appear to be Celtic Crosses and other traditional Celtic symbolism, that dot the landscape of historic Armenia

They can even prove that Mongolians with blond hair have DNA from the Scythians, who also share DNA with the Proto-celts.

    "They were a people who lived simple lives of farming, religion, and warfare"...come on you're better than this. This is such a narrow-minded perspective. The Celts were in fact just as sophisticated as we are today and any other society in the history of agriculture. They were also a people of art, craftsmanship, trade, oral tradition, and had a unique relationship with their natural environment. it's the 21st century and people like you are still calling them a simple people?! We need to get over ourselves and wake up to the fact that in pre-Roman history, humans were... human.
