  • Most large parrots have a tendency to become one person birds; but with socialization, your bird will learn to accept all members of the family as a part of their flock.

    Your videos are so helpful! My older sister has an African grey, but animals aren't allowed in the building where she lives, so he's been staying with our mother for a couple of years... And since she doesn't know how to handle him he's barely socialized at all! After I started watching your videos I decided to try and help him. So me and my boyfriend drop by a few times a week and let him out of his cage and try to make contact with him... We've discovered that he loves shiny objects and especially keys! In the beginning we just stood at an arm's distance from the cage (and occasionally drop a treat in his food bowl) while he placed him self as far away as possible. When he got used to us being there he let us closer. A few months passed along with a lot of patience and now he'll let us scratch his neck as long as he gets to play with some keys at the same time. I'm glad to see that this method works and that he's making progress! So thank you so much for you enlightening videos and help! We wouldn't be able to do this if not! :) (sorry for the long comment, haha)

    You should write a book for new parrot owners. I have experience with incubation & hand feeding birds, but African Greys are a new experience. Mine was 5 weeks old. Precious!

    Friends of mine got their Grey from a parrot shelter. It had its cage and perch at the reception area, because this bird is so friendly and social anyone could hold and play with it! When my friends came in to pick out a parrot to adopt, they immediately fell in love with this Grey, a 7 year old female in this case, and when they came to pick it up, one lady working at the shelter actually was so sad to see the bird go she shed a few tears... my friends had to promise to visit once in a while with the Grey because the shelter folks would miss it so badly :) So Greys being one person birds is definitely not true, at least in this case.

      Nicki Soedjiman Thanks Nicki! Although, I wouldn't consider myself a whisperer. A "whisperer" implies that I have a special talent or secret that allows me to make a connection with animals. I think anyone can learn how to communicate just as well with their pets if they're willing to put in the time! :)

    Commend this girl for trying "and " doing what you tell her she obviously likes the bird , but doesn't understand body language ( which is hard to teach anyone ) so good on her for listening to what you are telling her because you do know what you are doing. Oh if only I could train my hubby - my grey doesn't like him so hubby hates him ( calls him " Chucky Bird " ) the bird even says it now when he sees hubby LOL

    Yes this is exactly what I was looking for!! Due to circumstances I accidentally made my GCC a ‘one-person bird’ and am now working on undoing that!

    This demonstrates an excellent progression of gentle training of a sensitive breed of bird. Positive reinforcement over a reasonable time-frame is such a powerful tool in winning a parrot over and obtaining a friend for life!

    These video's are so helpful and your observational skills are on point. I'm getting a ringneck parakeet in a couple of months, it's so sad how people buy parrots with little knowledge about their behavior. :) Thank you for all your shared knowledge.

    Your African Grey skills are amazing. I may be getting one soon. A local bird store's breeder has a hen on eggs and will get them in at about 4 weeks old. My wife and I plan on socializing it together from when its at that 4 week age. The staff would be the only other people to handle it.

    I think your videos are really going to help me when I get my conure. I hope the breeder doesn't do more damage than good! They said they would have the baby "all tamed and ready to cuddle" 😳. You and your bird are so cute together!

    You can care for a parrot even as a "house-sitter" type situation. They are obviously a little more difficult than dogs and cats, but birds benefit from the same treatment you would give a horse, firm, fair and consistent treatment. They don't know they are doing anything wrong when they attempt to bite off your fingers - they think they are defending themselves.
    You have to convince them to accept your care. Once they do, they love you.

    This is a REALLY good video. It's easy to make videos of an already tamed bird but on this video, we can tell smokey know who that person is but she still has to gain her trust!!
    Great tips, you're reading that bird perfectly!! Very good. I am getting a 2.5yo sun conure soon. Would you say I can apply everything the way you do it?

    I've two African Greys and I've never kept them caged and it's been eight to ten years now can I still train them ? they just talk a few words and repeat the way I whistle and get food from my hands but dont step up or let me touch them.. should I put them in the cage?

    • @scottporter4524
      @scottporter4524 6 лет назад

      Of course you can train them. I'm training my 4 month old baby baby things now. She's already potty trained. Putting them in the cage is a punishment. Not sure why you'd want to do that based on your comment.
