Mad, mad love for Brno from Vienna! We've visited it so many times and each visit is great. The food, the architecture, the different neighborhoods...it's an amazing place!
Brno is great. Much less touristy and scammy than Prague but just as beautiful and loaded with just as many cool things to see and do. Definitely an essential stop on a Czech trip. The bomb bunker was the coolest part for me.
On my first visit to Czechia, I visited Brno before going to Praha. I too loved the town. It's much smaller than Praha, and very easy to get around. It is very hilly, so have some very good shoes for walking. There is a ton of history in that area. One of Napoleon's most famous battles was fought nearby. Take a trek up the hill to the local castle for some amazing views. I didn't make it to the underground yet, but that is a definite on my next visit. It's known as a college town, and the population drops a bit when the university is not in session. Also, see if you can figure out how to actually read the local astronomical clock. My biggest regret about visiting Brno, I did not allow enough time in the city before I had to move on to Praha.
Dobry den! I visited Prague for a short vacation trip a few days ago to get a feeling for the culture and the people, since I'm planning an exchange semester next year. Actually in Brno. I loved Prague, but it was very touristy, so I'm really looking forward to Brno and a real dense Czech experience. Your video came right on time!
Brno is NOT real Czech, - Brno is different an3d the mentality of its people is waaaaay toooooo different from typical Czech and very mind destroying... Better go to another reagional capitals like Plzeň(Pilsen), České Budějovice(Budweiss), Pardubice, Hradec Králové or even Ostrava, -but SKIP. Brno, Olomouc, Zlín Jihlava and Ústí nad Labem...
Sooo.. there are maybe 5 channels I subscribe to that I never miss a video. And The Honest Guide is one of them. I will probably never visit there, even though I would love to. But there is something about the feel of their videos that I enjoy. I also like learning about other places, cultures, etc.. but I love their style and learning all obout Prague and anywhere else these 2 may travel. Thank you for years of entertainment. Very much appreciated.
Traveled to Brno from UK many times between 2006-2012, either DJ'ing at the 7Nebe club or just flying there and enjoying the city for a few days before taking the student bus to Prague, usually very hungover. Wish this video (and the gourmet guide) existed back then!
I love Brno. I went there and there was pretty much zero tourists, amazing locals, food is so much better than Praha. I love the city and would return in a heartbeat. Close by is the Punkva cave. Incredible place, worth checking out. Two places to check out is V Melounovém, cukru, an incredible place to grab a coffee and cake. Stopkova Plzeňská Pivnice is my favorite place to get duck and dumplings. More food than you could ever ask for, great atmosphere and just one of my favorite places in the world. Come to Brno. It's where I feel at home
I'm from London and my wife's from just outside Brno. I regularly travel there, at least once a year, but I kind of see it as I see London - the place I go to get stuff. After watching this, I am going to spend a bit more time looking around rather than just getting shopping and heading home. I guess it's easy to take for granted that which is familiar to you.
I'm lithuanian on my 12th year in Brno and i love it there, always said 'like at home but better' - fantastic transport, many green pllaces, smacl in the middle of 3 airports so easy to travel to/from, many art places and almost no tourists. Heaven!
Great video, but still, all the things you missed! Špilberk castle, the Capuchin crypts, Villa Stiassni, and Prýgl, the reservoir... Brno is an amazing city with so many things to see and do!
Hats down. Thank you. We are taking holidays for Easter 2024. Coming to Berlin for 1 night to see war stuff, then 5 days in Dresden with family, and then 2 nights in Praha for beer and free transport. But after seeing this we might give a day to Brno as well. Some adventure this will be. Thank you again.
I've never ever fancied going on hliday to the czech republic, but every time I watch your videos it actually makes me want to visit, and looking at Brno, think a visit in the next couple of years, Brno looks a lovely place.
I LOVE Brno! I visited for the first time in the early 2000s and have returned many times. It is a delightful little city, full of personality and we have always found very nice and interesting people. Also, I found the artistic scene very lively and unique. I have a lovely memory of a charming museum guide at Moravské zemské museum, a lady whom we afterwards met at a theatre soirée (by the way, Brno has a fantastic classical music scene) and she introduced us to all her lady friends bragging about the Italian couple she showed around! 🥰 I could think of lots of places, but I will recommend two: Rebio Velký Špalíček - it's a bio vegetarian restaurant (they have also other restaurants in town), food is delicious and the prices incredible (you pay by the weight) for bio food. The other one is Pegas, a small brewery which has also some rooms (those I didn't try). Beer is really good, as is the food. And the place has a lot of character. I hope I can return soon, I miss Brno a lot!
A few places I liked a lot in Brno (all have super nice people working): 1. Barčelato for gelato -- north at the Husitska red line tram stop. 2. Nett's BBQ -- a few blocks north of Barčelato. 3. Poppy Beans Coffee -- near Pionýrská red line tram stop. 4. Mymika for espresso -- a bit north of The Sea (big new fountain). 5. Vom Fass for vinegar -- it's a chain, but the fruit vinegars on the market veggies are fab. 6. Štrúdlárna Brno -- fabulous tvaroh and strudels and jams made by owner. 7. Monogram Espresso Bar -- superb mocha and small but great selection of beans. 8. Matějovo pekařstvi -- store with great yogurt, + a honey store with raspberry+honey mix to die for. 9. Mama Stella -- bakery with good everything but superb cinnamon rolls that always sell out fast.
I have been there and it was great. The lake about 20mins from the city is really nice in the summer! There was also a music festival next to the castle - great atmosphere. Reserve Villa Tugendhat like a month on advance, otherwise you won't get tickets. I was in Brno for cycling and I can tell you, that there are great routes in and around the city.
I spent a month in Brno in 2018 and I liked it enough to set a part of the novel I'm writing here, so this video is a godsend to remind me of the vibes of the city. Thanks :D
Just got back from a short trip of Brno-Prague-Ceske Budejovice. This video did help us a lot make the most of our visit. Some personal impressions: People outside the city centre of Brno tend to freeze when you start speaking in English to them. It was actually a very interesting experience: in Prague virtually everyone spoke in English. In Ceske Budejovice folks had challenges, but we managed to understand each other with a mixture of hand signals, German and English. Here the general reaction was more like 'OMG, what do I do now?' But we survived, no biggie. Upon arriving here after a 4-hour drive we parked in a shopping mall. I was eager to find a bathroom, turned out you have to pay for it (it's OK), but you could only pay in cash. This was one of the two times we were supposed to have cash in Czechia. Generally not a big deal at that point I did wish for a card reader at the entrance.
Hi Janek and Honza, welcome to Brno :) I live in Brno but I still learned new things by this video. Please do more videos about Brno, we are always ready to help. Thanks!
This was just awesome….We have 10 days at the end of August and certainly don’t want to spend it all in Prague….so you helped me greatly! Thanks again.
I'm just back from Karlovy Vary and it's an awesome city to behold and we had just great weather and a cool relaxing atmosphere. Also there was an UNESCO party thingy and I was able to discover some amazing czech rock and jazz artists (I didn't understand anything they were singing but the crowd was awesome). We have Brno on our next-to-visit-list for next year, really looking forward to it. Greetings from Germany 🍻
I’m visiting Prague in November. Never heard of Brno until now. Looks really cool! Definitely going to visit for a couple days on my way to Vienna. Great video as always, thank you from Detroit, USA!
Having followed your videos for over a year, we finally made it to Brno. Followed your tips(Na Rohu and Ema were fantastic) and found a great coffee spot in Cafe Localite. Off to Prague now, will no doubt follow your tips there too!
🤫 We don't talk about Brno no no no, we don't talk about Brno! 🤣🤣 Sorry couldn't resist. I really liked the place, especially because it's very authentic and without the massive crouds 😁👍
Thank you for the video. We live in brno the last 7 years with my husband he saw you the other day in brno and he told me but I didn't get to catch up and greet you. I love your work. I never agreed that brno is an awesome place, mediocre but you are right about one thing or 2, I never realized that it's quiet and far from touristy
Love BRNO. Been there a few times. I wish I knew your channel before I went there, but always had a great time. Another fun fact if you are a science nerd like us: Mendel, the father of genetics is from there. There is monument and museum. Also if you go to the tourist info center they sell a range of buttons, pins, and refrigerator magnets with the peas on them. They are cheap and a nice little momento of really important events that happened there.
If you like architecture, I also recommend going to Jurkovičova vila. It is gorgeous, and there was hardly anyone there. Bonus, if you walk from the city center, it takes you through the beautiful Wilson Forest.
I lived in Brno for 5 years. It's one of my favorite places that I've lived (out of 15 cities and counting). My favorite dessert used to be Cukrárna Kolbaba, where I'd get a větrník, but according to the reviews, it appears to have gotten worse. The handful of times I organized a work dinner, I'd schedule them at Stopkova Plzeňská Pivnice (near the main square), or Vittorio Restaurant (up the hill from Mendel Square). My favorite pizzeria was La Patas, a bit out of the way in a residential area on the edge of the city.
Just yesterday I looked at Brno on Google Maps and said "I want to go to there" (without knowing exactly why but there are so many "Brno" signs on the motorway in Austria) - perfect timing for that video! Sold.
I don't believe price for a magnum size beer in Brno is 2€10 , in France, it's at least 8€ every where in the country, in Paris and big cities , it's 15€ minimum...
I used to work in the ossuary for quite a while and once this one guy yelled at me: "It's a total rip off, just so you wait when Honest Guide comes here and exposes you!!"... Funny how things sometimes turn out in the end.😀
As a fresh Brno resident, I have a great recommendation for two cheap restaurants in Brno. The first one is called Poe Poe, which is a fast food restaurant serving pizza, fries, pancakes, waffles, donuts and other assorted quick bite meals. You can get a quick lunch there for under 100kč. It is located between Náměstí Svobody (the one with the astronomical clock) and the main train station The other restaurant is called Oáza (oasis), which serves vegan food for insanely low prices (usually 86kč for a full plate). There are almost no tables with chairs, so you eat while standing up, but it is a great way to eat a proper meal at a low price. It is one tram stop on either tram number 3, 10 or 12 away from Česká, which is a major tram interchange near MUNI, the "main" university in Brno.
I should have seen your video before we went to Brno in May. Been here for the second time and yes, its a nice city. I advice people to go to Mikulov as well.
I remember being in Brno in 1967 when Dubcek was in and the country was easing up a bit - before the Soviets came in to correct things. Stayed at a top hotel for the price of a couple of pairs of Levis traded on the black market by my mother. Things have changed!
I watch Honest Guide in English although I'm Czech. The main reason are the subtitles. The names for Brno in this video are really beautifull. My favourites are Bernard and Bruno. 10/10 I need to move from Brno to Bruno :D
YMCA Palac in Praha has this old style elevator, free of charge. First saw it in your clips, and when I saw it in real life, followed your advice and went all the way in it :) Nice experience!
We enjoyed the Paternoster In Brno's Main Post Office... I rode it a bunch of times, LOL. Brno was a lot of fun to visit... though there wasn't a single souvenir shop to buy a T shirt at. We finally found the Tourism office where they had a T shirt I could buy.
iam from Brno, and altought i very much appraciate you being here and that u liked the city, thank god there is not tons of souvenir shops and touristy areas like in Prague yet
About 15 years ago I came to Brno regularly for business reasons. I always stayed at the Hotel Ricc, a fantastic place with a historic design in the rooms, yet fairly cheap compared to other places. I always loved Brno, the small city, the people and of course the food. Only for Beer, Staropramen is better ;-)
It's also very interesting from the inside. It's very futuristic but at the same time you can see that it was built 100 years ago. It's got a very unique feel.
Please add „Brno“ to the name so people can find this amazing guide more easily! :) I was in Brno this summer and it brought only the best emotions! City has so much to offer and other Brno city guide (made by Honest guide) helped a lot! Local Beer for 1,8eu was something magical coming from Vienna with beer not less than 4,5eu!
law forbidding urban burials: sounds like Emperor Joseph II (He did that in central Prague and probably all over his realms) 3:33 Janek talking to a couple Moravians OMG a cat on the cover of the gourmet guide!
Brno is also good for public transport enthusiasts. Their most famous feature is probably the quad track section in front of the train station, but they also run basically every tram model Czechs ever made. By public transport, Brno shares the first spot for me together with Liberec, but since Liberec is getting rid of the dual gauge, and the last T2 is long retired, I guess Brno wins. Prague's public transport, despite being very comprehensive is quite cookie cutter: there's only 4 or 5 tram models, the tracks are all in the bland configuration along the centre of the street, there aren't many "creative solutions", no trolleybuses...
The only missing thing for the Czech culture is delicious Turkish restaurants like in Vienna. Turkish cousin should be definitely common in all around Czechia.
That "stock exchange" pub is something that we used to have in some places here in Spain. You had to just "hope" nobody else wanted the same as you for a while so you saw its price drop. It was a "risky" game, kind of a reverse auction (like they do on fish markets). By the way, it's been a few videos about Brno (which, even in this video, I'm not sure if it's more "Berno" or "Breno") but little (if ever anything) about its racetrack, which is how I (and surely many) first heard about Brno ever.
@@janpokorny2454 @rodrigojds I heard Janek saying both pronunciations, so to speak, so I don't know. It seems more like "Brenó" according to the phonetics.
You missed the Mamut Pub which would easily blow most non Czech's minds. Imagine a beer tap at your table where you can pour your own draught beer (the vats are refilled regularly so its very fresh and it was Staropromen!) a digital score board that marks every 1/2 litre poured per table. For a business function this becomes a real team building event :). The food is also very good. BBQ chicken, ribs, and wings or maybe try a pigs-knee (awesome). By far my favorite restaurant in all of Europe at the foot of the beautiful cathedral.
Janek was involved in a video for a different channel in Prague. They were planned to visit the 'The Pub' (same pour your own beer brand) but Janek deterred them from going because of the sole fact you wouldn't go into a coffee shop to make your own coffee so why would you pour your own beer. I agree with that.
When it comes to Speciality Coffee in Brno I can recommend my friends Allan & Kalli from Jokesasidecoffee roasters. Their coffeeshop is called "Stav se - espresso bar" located at bus/tram station Julianov!
Liked the video. Just curious, did you see any familiar scammers in Brno? Or as it was a "invited - promotional" video, it wasn't a good thing to show tourists?
I've been a few years ago in Brno and I was immediately in love. I think the architecture is a nice mix of Austro-Hungarian, communism and modern times. Very nice were also the hrad Spilberg and the big lake in the north-west of the city. And as a transportation scientist I can say that the public transport system is very good for a city of that size!
@@Forseti2 there is a direst train from Praha to Zlín called Zlínský express (3h 30min) and if you are going from Brno/Ostrava just go to Otrokovice and from there there is a train every hour/half hour or an MHD (number 2 or 6) every like 10 minutes...There are also a direct buses from Brno (Vsetín-Brno) and Ostrava too... It acessable if you take like five secounds to look at the timetbles instead of going blind
Mad, mad love for Brno from Vienna! We've visited it so many times and each visit is great. The food, the architecture, the different neighborhoods...it's an amazing place!

Good video ! Funny highlight is at 5:52 there is a totally drunk guy leaving the pub. hahaha.

I just went to Brno in mid-November for the biennial Janáček festival. A really great musical event in a wonderful city!
Brno is amazing! I lived in Brno for a year as an exchange student. It was great experience for me.
I've been to Brno in 2019, loved the place! And always wanted to know how to pronouce its name 😂

Great video, but still, all the things you missed! Špilberk castle, the Capuchin crypts, Villa Stiassni, and Prýgl, the reservoir... Brno is an amazing city with so many things to see and do!
That construction worker had a fucking nightmare that day
Imagine just falling while working on the ground into a cave filled with remains

czechia charging money (cash) for toilets is one of the most backward thing i've seen
I've been living in CZ for almost 20 years now. Maybe time to finally give Brno a visit.
Visited Prague from 2nd Sept to 7th Sept 23. Your you tube video were of much help during our visit Thanks.
People who have not been in Chechia do not realize just how awesome Chzech food is!!! Greetings from Serbia 🇷🇸
Ma vlast! Brno also features quite a few outstanding vegan/vegetarian restaurants
diky na ta video
My tip is to skip Monday if you are doing a day trip as lots of attractions are closed.

The Gregor Mendel Musuem is excellent - see the exact spot he grew his famous peas.
True! A mythical place for geneticists and science people in general 👍
Exactly! The elevator up to the exhibit is great too!

This is one of my favorites cities. I was there and I discovered some places there I'm showing on my RUclips channel too. Good views of the city man.
Best thing in Brno is the science museum Vida. I liked the way they described it similar to smth like "for kids up to 65 years old"
Brno seems to be a very cool place
Great video (as usual) 😊
Keep on the good work!!!
Nah imagine falling through the fucking ground and being surrounded by bones and skulls 💀 that poor fella
You just sold me on Brno!!! I've been to Prague three times, and always had a wonderful time. But Brno really is inviting...
If you like architecture, I also recommend going to Jurkovičova vila. It is gorgeous, and there was hardly anyone there. Bonus, if you walk from the city center, it takes you through the beautiful Wilson Forest.
I slept at Brno railway station for a night in 1992, I remember they were showing Benny Hill on the TV in the waiting room
Oh the big village, how cute!

such a cool fountain and what an excellent piece for attracting people for relaxing and local businesses
It is located between Náměstí Svobody (the one with the astronomical clock) and the main train station
The other restaurant is called Oáza (oasis), which serves vegan food for insanely low prices (usually 86kč for a full plate).
Yeeeeessss! ❤ Our Brno is so cool! Thank you for the awesome video! ❤🎉
You were right about everything but you were most right about Ema’s. Pure heaven
Thanks ill go there right now, i went to the municipality building but it was a no go.
iam from Brno, and altought i very much appraciate you being here and that u liked the city, thank god there is not tons of souvenir shops and touristy areas like in Prague yet
I've lived in Brno quite a long time ago. I do go back occasionally, next time in 3 weeks.
I love your Prague vids, but this one really HIS HOME.
I miss Brno! 😢 what a wonderful city
The villa looks like it was built yesterday, but it's actually from 1928. A true masterpiece ahead of its time.
It's also very interesting from the inside. It's very futuristic but at the same time you can see that it was built 100 years ago. It's got a very unique feel.
Thanks! I need to book an opera ticket in Brno and anjoy a few days there. I will use the Paternoster, had the chance to ride one in Frankfurt
Oh man! I lives in Brno for 3 years and really miss it. Amazing city
Next time I am back in Europe, I will go to Brno. Thank zou for the nice video.
Please add „Brno“ to the name so people can find this amazing guide more easily! :)
I was in Brno this summer and it brought only the best emotions! City has so much to offer and other Brno city guide (made by Honest guide) helped a lot! Local Beer for 1,8eu was something magical coming from Vienna with beer not less than 4,5eu!
law forbidding urban burials: sounds like Emperor Joseph II (He did that in central Prague and probably all over his realms)
3:33 Janek talking to a couple Moravians
OMG a cat on the cover of the gourmet guide!
Honestly one of my favourite cities in the world. The best way to describe it is the city where there is nothing, but nothing is missing.
And Brno is just few kilometers from Moravsky Kras with lot of caves and underground attractions (e.g. Propast Macocha).
My hometown, changed a little since Christmas 2018, my last visit.
It’s more Berno :)
The pronunciation is [ˈbr̩nɔ] -- no e at all. Yeah, hard to say for foreigners
@@janpokorny2454 @rodrigojds I heard Janek saying both pronunciations, so to speak, so I don't know. It seems more like "Brenó" according to the phonetics.
@@fadetounforgiven He's over-pronouncing it a bit for the international audience
Unfortunately, the last MotoGP event in Brno took place in 2020 and it seems like it's not going to return, definitely not anytime soon.
Been to Brno years ago and loved it!
Prague, Brno, Olomouc and Český Krumlov are prolly the best 3 citites to visit if you are visiting Czechia.
Cool. Though depending on the drinking culture of the visitors that sounds like a potential recipe for a trip to the ER
Mamut unfortunately went out of business probably about a year ago.
I guess we do talk about Brno
When it comes to Speciality Coffee in Brno I can recommend my friends Allan & Kalli from Jokesasidecoffee roasters. Their coffeeshop is called "Stav se - espresso bar" located at bus/tram station Julianov!
What about the wonderful rifles!? Proud owner of a few myself. Love your channel. Cheers from Sweden
I absolutely love this city.
I have been to Brno several times for business, luckily always found a bit of time to see the City. Really nice and enjoyable. Thank you for showing.
This was EXCELLENT. I love watching your videos. Always informative, interesting, and FUN. Thank you . from the west coast of the US.
Good show!! Thank you for it.janek
To be honest, there is paternoster in Prague you can visit for free, located in YMCA palace.
I want someone to look at me the way Janek looks at food.
U Třech Čertů
BEST BEER EVER, UNBELIEVABLE
I love your gray shirt. ❤❤❤❤
Liked the video. Just curious, did you see any familiar scammers in Brno?
Or as it was a "invited - promotional" video, it wasn't a good thing to show tourists?
Brno is a GREAT city, can't wait to get back.
You didn't show the view from under the horse statue!
Moravia and Brno is nice 😊
I've been a few years ago in Brno and I was immediately in love. I think the architecture is a nice mix of Austro-Hungarian, communism and modern times. Very nice were also the hrad Spilberg and the big lake in the north-west of the city. And as a transportation scientist I can say that the public transport system is very good for a city of that size!
The elevator in Zlin is free as well , and inside Europe's first ''Skyscraper'' Zlin next on your list :)
Yop, but Zlín isn't really accessible...
@@Forseti2 What do you mean? Zlín is easily accesible by bus, train or car...
