This is for those who don't know: the reason why the Czech Republic is mentioned many times in Hollywood media is that it serves as a cost-effective location for shooting exteriors and interiors of other famous European landmarks and cities, such as Paris, for years.

I think many English speaking people would find the Czech title of Breaking Bad funny, because it was introduced here as "Gingerbread Dad". The caveat is that Czech word for gingerbread, "perník", is a slang term for methamphetamine. It originates from WWII German brand name for meth Pervitin, which was used in the war by Third Reich soldiers.
I always wondered whether it was also a call-back to the movie Gingerbread Man, which in the Czech translation was "Perníkový dědek" - Gingerbread Old Man.
As a czech person I was always really happy about the way they were talking about the Czech Republic in Gilmore girls! I have yet to know any other tv show that seems to have such nice, educated knowledge of our culture and the dialogue about the czech topics was always so dignified, it really seemed to me like the writers like our country and actually know stuff about it. I especially loved the talk about Havel, Kafka, Kundera and so on!
What they say about the hostel in Prague offering a cell in which Vaclav Have was held is actually true. The key thing, though, is that he was only held there short-term for interrogation before being either released or jailed/imprisoned. The building where he had been held, which btw has an amazing history itself, was repurposed into a hostel after the fall of the iron curtain. The hostel kept a couple former basement cell rooms to rent in mostly original condition and eventually evolved into a very nice and highly rated "Unitas Hotel". I happen to know all this cause I worked there for some years and I gotta say I sometimes kinda miss the eerie feeling I used to get thinking of all the stories that building could tell...
I was amazed that Janek missed the overall joke of the quiz segment where every single answer refers to weed. Even if Snoop did not know the Czech call number, he would've guessed correctly.
While traveling in a totally different country, I had a taxi driver who kept referring to your country as "Czechoslovenia." I tried to correct him a few times, but he wouldn't listen.
Just a quick note - we didn't rename the country, Czech Republic is still its official name, Czechia is just a shorter version that was introduced way later. It's normal for countries to have two versions of their names, you wouldn't say 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', you'd say the UK. You also wouldn't call Germany the Federal Republic of Germany, because it's too long. TL:DR - both the Czech Republic and Czechia are still the names of our country and you can refer to it as both! The one name that you SHOULDN'T use however is "Czech" since that is an adjective and not a name of a country xD I am in Czechia 👍 I am in the Czech Republic 👍 I am in Czech 🙅♀️ Hope that helps!
Well, actually, the name 'Czechia' wasn't introduced later. :) It was an official short geographical name of the country since 1993 and the word itself goes back to 17th century. It just wasn't used for official presentation of our country because of political reasons, but you can look it up in the UN archives from '93.
I found out that many more people abroad knows the term Bohemia, instead of Czech Republic od Czechia. And then there is fun in explaining that Bohemia is just a part of Czech Republic.
Actually in How I met Your Mother there is another episode in Season 01 Episode 20 called Best Prom Ever, in the minute 14:48 Lyli meanwhile she is dancing with a guy asked him what is his plan and he mentioned he will move to Prague and open his video game company.
The 420 is actually supposed to be 4:20 PM. This was the code used by some California high schoolers in the 70’s to set up a time to go to smoke pot. Over a period of time this spread throughout California, and the entire US of A then followed. When you say ‘four twenty’ you are usually talking about time but it could also be April 20 which is considered to be kind of a holiday for potheads.
And the game show is set up so one member of the team (Martha Stewart, in this case) has the answers in front of them, and must describe them (without saying them) in such a way that the other team member (Snoop Dogg here) says the correct ones. Here all of the answers were marijuana-themed (weed, roach, 420). We can instead be impressed that Martha Stewart knows the country calling code for the Czech Republic (which is not beyond the realm of possibility). Within the context of the themed answers, "420" was really the only thing Snoop could have said in reply.

Naoki Urasawa's Monster spends many chapters of its story in the Czech Republic, some specifically in Prague, with the most important backstory taking place in former Czechoslovakia. It's also just one of the greatest and most well written pieces of fiction ever created with *the* greatest and most well written antagonist ever created. You should give it a watch and/or read!
yea i think Gray Man should have been there but i think he found only clips from some video and did not use his own (the vid is a bit older so the Gray Man was not out yet)
Amazon Prime's Jack Ryan also has Prague mentioned through season 3 with some shots done in there and a character who is the (fictional) president of Czech Republic
I remember in one of the episodes of Better Call Saul, the wife of the German engineer Werner Ziegler mentioned the hot springs of Karlovy Vary and also Prague to Lalo as they meet each other in a bar.
One of my favorite films off all time was shot mostly in Prague, and that film is Amadeus. I first saw that film when I was a teenager, and I remember watching the behind-the-scenes video on the DVD and in that they explained why they chose Prague and how amazing it was to shoot the film there. And that was what inspired my want to visit Prague (and the Czech Republic in general). I still haven’t gone yet, but some day! 🎥🎬🖤
fun fact: Salieri's actor, as the only member of the crew, let himself be accommodated in another hotel in order to feel isolated from the rest of the crew, and was able to empathize more with his role.
Well, amazing it was, but not just because of the city itself, the architecture and so on, but mainly due to the reason that in that time we were still occupied by the USSR, turned into a totalitarian, slave and satellite state.. The Velvet revolution happened many years after, in November 1989... There were police (called STB that time), many spies, censors and so on during their whole stay.. So it was not easy for them to shoot under these conditions... But I personally love Amadeus, the movie, it's a briliant work of art..
It was shot in Kroměříž, not Prague. Fun tour of the Bishop’s Chateau if you’re interested. Just don’t worry about the leather slippers. Also, the gardens their are just beautiful. Definitely a place to visit.
Yes, the director was Miloš Forman, a hugely famous director, including such films as “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “The People vs. Larry Flynt”
0:22 and 8:13 -- Petra Petrova (Rocky Rock) is likely a veiled reference to Paulina Porizkova, an amazingly attractive Czech woman who defected to America and became a supermodel in the 1980s. She played opposite Tom Selleck in the 1989 movie "Her Alibi." Since the Czech republic was then behind the "Iron Curtain," she represented all Czech women in the mind of most Americans, especially young men.
I was so confused when I first heard about the new Czech name. I had literally just moved back to the U.K after living in Prague for a year (where everyone I met-Czech and tourist alike- had called it the Czech Republic), went on holiday to Costa Rica and had an American correct me and say "it's not the Czech Republic. That's offensive to call them. The country's name is Czechia" and I had literally only been away from the Czech Republic for like a month. I was so confused 😅. But I've since googled it and asked the people I knew and it seems like both names exist simultaneously, neither replacing the other.
Sure. Czech Republic is the official name, Czechia is the official short name. France is also a short name for the French Republic, and Germany is actually the Federal Republic of Germany.
The English name Czechia (pronounced 'Che-ki-ya' btw) is completely fine and logical, because in many languages, our country has been well-known by its short-form name for some time already. E.g. Tsjekkia, Tsjechië, Tschechien, Tjeckien, Tchéquie, Çekya, Češka... So, why should it be a problem in English? 🤷♂️
Well, we just don't like it... It is hard to explain, but it doesn't sound right in our ears... But we are tolerating it in the end because it is way better than "Czechoslovakia". I guess. Most Czech people are already used to it and it is not such a big deal anymore. But if you want to please us, then speak about us as about the "Czech Republic", you will see the difference. ;)
@Kobylkavpyzamu theres no we, you may, just like guys in the vid, personally dislike it but theres no we in sense we, Czechs. lots of Czechs prefer shorter Czechia over the long Czech Republic( just like most of Slovaks speaks usually about Slovakia and aren't anal about using Slovak Republic all the time or most of French usually call France France and not French Republic) cos to them it makes sense, its correct Czech and its been used in past, it has no political connotations and they dont think just cos they personally dont like someones name it gives them right to demand someone to be renamed and others stop using it. My Grandma wouldn't like it cos it'd remind her Tschechei used by Germans during war, which is valid opinion- for her to dislike it but she wouldn't have right to push her own opinion on every Czech cos she wasn't narcissist and knew she can not speak for all Czechs but only for herself. how would you like it if I speak for all of Czechs and been talking about how we Czechs all think that anyone and any tourist who doesn't use Czechia has IQ of room temperature and any Czech who meet them will dislike them automatically just cos I personally think that reasons like "Czechia is similar to Chechnya so its wrong to use the name" are stupid and equally moronic like to demand Austria shouldn't be called Austria anymore cos its too similar to Australia?
I don't think it really is. Apart from the weirdly common thing in the US news programmes where they use Czechia and Chechnya (a completely different country absorbed into the Russian empire) interchangeably. And a few other confusions.
Great video Janek! You forgot to mention the movie EuroTrip that was supposed to be following the cast in London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam and more, yet was shot completely in Prague! 🤯 Would you consider making a video showing us the filming locations?
My favourite was in tv show Roswell (1999) where the word Czechoslovakians was used as a replacement for aliens. They even acknowledged in the show that it doesn't make much sense since Czechoslovakia no longer existed as it had splitted in two in 1992.
Czechia please. 6:57 "He is a guy from Czech" OUCH! As a near native English speaker from Czech(ia), I didn't expect that from Janek. Greetings from Swiss.
I always thought he would say it like that because that's how it roughly translates from Czech. Plus, it's shorter than saying "from the Czech Republic". Plus I heard many Czech people don't really like the new name, Czechia. He might be one of them. Idk.
My former boss used to ask me "How's Czech?" as in how are things in my country, my family etc.. I always felt the tiny urge to snap back as "Czech what?!" as it made me irrationally angry that he didn't call my country properly :D But I myself never call it Česká Republika, but Česko, so he's alright :D
The mention I remember the most is from Madam Secretary, pilot episode 8:56: - "Madam secretary, it's the Czech ambassador, he says it's urgent." - "What can be urgent over there?"
Parts of a very famous Indian film Rockstar are also shot at stairs of the Prague Castle. You might want to check, it's nice! I first visited Prague in Dec 2019 after watching your videos, went to a small cafe in the city centre and bought your book Honest Guide Prague full of amazing drawings and interesting information about the city! Ahoj Kluci, I sent you guys a tweet which was also left unanswered 😜about well, Montreal being used to pretend to be Prague in the Netflix tv shows called The Recruit. So, it could be fun for you to do a video about how cities or countries are being used to show Prague instead of Prague and the Czech Rep themselves.
I'm pretty sure that happens a lot. That's why I think it would fun to see an ironic video of other cities "acting" as Prague. The Montreal sequence is really bad for me because I know both cities really well and the boys could have a lot of fun with it.
Oh wow! That is so interesting considering that for us Czechs Prague is kind of a meme for being so cheap to film in, that even Netflix producers come here to use Prague as pretend-Paris, pretend-Venice, and pretend-all-of-Europe kind of in general (for example The Grey Man re-used a few Prague streets to pretend the main guy traveled all over Europe and Asia). So the fact that they faked Prague in Montreal when they could've had the real thing for quite cheap is unexpected and quite funny to me. 😆 Now I'm really curious to see what their recreation of Prague made in Montreal looked like 🙂
Just gonna mention John Candy again - he did mention Czechoslovakia in the movie Planes, Trains & Automobiles while upselling his shower curtain rings as fancy earings.
John Candy was also in the 1981 film Stripes, in which a squad of US Army soldiers accidentally cross into Czechoslovakia and are captured. They are rescued by Bill Murray and Eugene Levy in an EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle, an armored personnel carrier disguised as a recreational vehicle.
Here in Brazil, Prague has actually shown up as a location in several telenovelas. The most notable is the 2001 novela "Um Anjo Caiu do Céu" ("An Angel Fell from Heaven"), where it's the location to the big events that act as the catalyst to the plot of the show. The main character is a photographer who's in town holding an exhibition of his photographs showcasing how much people suffered under the Nazi regime. After that exhibition, he ends up taking a picture of a Neo-Nazi terrorist leader in an intimate moment (mourning the loss of his wife) and that ends up getting him pursued by the terrorists, culminating in his car getting hijacked and exploding with him inside it. This, in turn, causes the angel from the title to swoop in and save the main character's life, and while the main character is in surgery, the angel comes to him and strikes up a deal to help him make amends with his family within six months.
I miss Prague so much whenever I see your videos, I was only there for a couple days when I was 16 and i was on a guided school tour so i didnt get to explore as much as i would have liked but I really enjoyed my time there, except for getting tricked by the fake weed lol but that hemp-seed chocolate bar was kinda tasty though.
In HIMYM, also Starobrno makes an appearance. You can find the freeze frame by googling HIMYM and Starobrno. The weird part is that no such six pack has ever been sold here in the Czech Republic.
There's also a show called Jane the Virgin where one of the main characters, Petra is Czech. There's a scene in the first season that's in Czech (pretty bad accents, but they tried)
I love Jane the Virgin! And I always thought it was both nice and funny to have Petra there :D. 'Cos they used a lot of specific details that were kinda accurate yet very off, like picking up koruna coin, but using much older Czechoslovak one (and the whole Miloš throwing acid was just weird), Petra's "traditional" wedding dress, the accents...but the show was just all over the top, so I forgive them :D. Though I would've happily consulted for them 😂
I'm an Indian and one of our film industries made a movie named Prague. It wasn't a good one or hit in my knowledge, but nevertheless, I think it's a cool fact. :)
I love that Prague often is used as filming location for mysterious eastern European hellholes. And I'm always, guys, have you been there? There are no goons with guns protecting the mafia boss in the street!
Hey, As a Norwegian it is quite funny that some people in the Czech republic is calling themselves Czechia because that is what most people in my country have called you for a while. Well since your separation from Slovakia, even though some people where slow to split your names.

Actually when I was in New Zealand, we were talking about, who was from where, and when I was talking about the Czech Republic now and then it happened that someone didn't know and then Prague .. yeah I know that's where I was .. and yes a few people thought that Prague was a country.. holt "Nikdo není dokonalý" / "Nobody is perfect" ;)
And you are right because 90% of locals call ourselves Čechy, which is basically it. Czech Republic is quite formal. Btw. we still call your country Netherland (Nizozemí) formally, but Holland in a common speak. :)
In Germany and Slovakia we too say Czechia. Adding Republic is quite formal. Same with Slovakia -> formal: Slovak Republic. I think many languages leave out the Republic except English.

2:50 Here’s the explanation for this part with Snoop Dogg: April 20 (or 4/20) is celebrated by marijuana enthusiasts around the world as a day to gather and smoke together. According to1 and2 , the holiday originated with five students at San Rafael High School in California who met at 4:20 p.m. by the campus’ statue of chemist Louis Pasteur to partake in marijuana. The term "420" was popularized by the Grateful Dead and High Times magazine, and the date has become an annual gathering of pot smokers in states where marijuana has been legalized, such as Colorado and California.

420, 4:20 or 4/20 (pronounced four-twenty) is cannabis culture slang for marijuana and hashish consumption, especially smoking around the time 4:20 pm (16:20). It also refers to cannabis-oriented celebrations that take place annually on April 20 (4/20 in U.S. and Canadian date form).

It is when Lily is also thinking about stopping the tradition and is scared that some other woman with 6-pack of beer (Starobrno) will sway Marshall.
Hi! The last segment about how people keep referring to the Czech Republic as „Czechoslovakia“ made me think of an obscure thing I've stumbled upon some while ago. The Vogue magazin has different editions for different countries and one of them is the „Vogue Czechoslovakia“.
In Big Bang Theory was more mentions. In one episode The Santa Simulation (Vánoční deziluze) s6 e11 was mentions Czech king Svatý Václav (St. Venceslav) in Christmass song by Sheldon. And in another episode Penny is talking about fake shooting movie in Prague.
Jane the virgin has a lot of CZech Republic and Prague mentioned. One of the main features is acting a girl coming from CZech. I think her name is Petra
I still say Czech Republic. I can't get used to Czechia. And I often hear it get confused with the Chechnya now. The Czech Republic sounds official and quirky at the same time. Which pretty much sums up my feelings about the CR. It's officially quirky.
Yes! It really resembles Chechnya. I remember that even before the Czechia term was invented in 2013, CNN and some other US TV channels even marked Czech Republic as Chechnya 🤣
@@IQEGO Indeed. And here's the weird thing. The Czech's don't say it. They might say Česko. Czechia is basically a marketing term to get around exactly the issue that Janek is talking about. @@georgiancrossroads I don't like the term either. Because it's completely made up. Shout out to Netflix’s “The Grey Man”, all filmed in Prague so much the tried to claim Wilson Station was Vienna! LOL! And, the sound engineers put in French police sirens to make it, I guess, sound more European. Also another shout out to Better Call Saul in season 6, episode 5, around 40:22 for the Karlovy Vary mention.
My favourite mention of the Czech Republic is in The Sopranos. In the first episode, the first character to get whacked is Czech, Emil "E-mail" Kolar. He even comments to Christopher that he should sometimes try Czech sausages.
Fun fact in Lithuania we call it already Čekija (as your mentioned Czechia) or by full official name Čekijos Respublika (but almost nobody uses this one as it's too long).
I'm sorry for pointing it out, but I can't help but be amused by the differences (like thumbnails and video titles) between this channel and the Czech one (Kluci z Prahy/Guys from Prague). For this one, the Czech version was more direct about how you were upset about the bad reputation (the title was "Alcohol! Drugs! How are we talked about in Hollywood?"). It's understandable, though: different approaches for different audiences. Still (as someone who likes insider insights from other cultures/countries), I'm always interested about how natives of a certain country talk about national issues with each other (there's usual some degree of national pride that "dictates" you shouldn't point out national flaws to foreigners). I know dirty laundry is washed at home, but boy am I curious to see that being washed 😂
I thought the adoption of the name "Czechia" was because they didn't have an official short name, just the formal "Czech Republic". It was like saying "The People's Republic of China" instead of just "China".
If you say China, it's either The People's Republic of China or the Republic of China (the official name of Taiwan), it's always not so funny when you want to send something to PR China and it instead ends up in R China, especially when it's something time-sensitive.
Great video. John Candy in the reindeer scene is actually saying "the ninth one of course, Rudolph", not "then I bought of course, Rudolph". He's talking quickly so difficult to follow but that's what he's saying.
We in Romanian call it Cehia. It's the official name in Romanian. Or if we want to be official is Republica Ceha. So the way Czech people want us to refer to it now, it's quite easy for us since we called it basically that (it also sounds almost identical) is no big deal at all. It's crazy though that some pp still don't know it's called Czech Republic or anything else except Czechoslovakia :D
What happened with the taxiscam video's? Haven't seen this channel for a while and it came back in my recommended video's. I wanted to see what followed up after the interview you had with the taxi boss and couldn't find the video's anymore.
It's kinda funny that Plzeň , the City Pilsener comes from, is in the Czech Republic and not in Germany, the country that is now most known for Pils. At least here in the Ruhr Valley, everyone drinks it, even though export is way better because it's less acidic and has more horse power. Czechs have the best dark beer though, and their beer-brewing culture is even better preserved than in Germany ( apart from Bavaria maybe. Sadly I only visited Prague, so it may be the same over there, in that it's mostly preserved for tourists). It's so striking to me, that this city has burned itself into my mind so much, that I recognize many places in the videos, despite having been there only once for a week, when I was in the 12th or 13th year of school. The best place to be, is behind the castle. There is a chasm with ruins, where you are shielded from views, it looks beautiful and for some reason almost noone goes there. There where also some narrow ways with hanging bridges, that where more slippy than the stones in front of the never ending stairs. Edit: Ok, so this is not confusing at all. Czechia and Chechnia. Tschechien, Tschetschenien. At least the thing with the republic was easy to remember. 😑
When I say Czechia I get blank stares. Prague is an eternal city state, even though in practice it is now just a very important and historic city in a nation state. Firearms enthusiasts know about Czechia though, because of famous manufacturers like ČZUB and FK Brno.
@@sleepete12 I'll never get why are some people so hung up on using the full 'Czech Republic'. We would never say 'Slovak Republic', 'United States of America'(instead of just US or America) or 'Russian Federation'. So why is it so bad to shorten the Czech Republic as well? Hell, we even use 'Česko' instead of the full 'Česká Republika' in our own damn language.
John Candy's character, in the move "Plains Trains, and Automobiles", also mentions the Czech Republic, by saying he was selling "Czechoslovakian ivory". Which is funny.
I think it would have been worth mentioning the episode in BBC Sherlock season 1 episode 3 the great game where there were three mentions about the country- the Bohemian stationary, the Prague legend "Golem" and Miss Wenceslas.
Good video again. Regarding Sheldon's educational intermezzo, I (to this day) blame mr.klaus & mr.meciar to decide the whole "divorce" without "children".
While cool Praguers may avoid downtown like the plague on New Years Eve, many Czechs in smaller towns do shoot off Roman candles and other fireworks randomly on new years often bouncing them off buildings and back into the crowd. I doubt those are foreign tourist I see in down-town Olomouc or the suburbs of Ostrava.
Mission Impossible, xXx, Bourne Identity, Gray man ... that are the movies I can recall at the moment. I suppose some non-action movies were shot in Prague, but I do not watch them. Bourne identity used Prague only to mimic Switzerland, but those other movies mentioned Prague specifically. Even some of our actors were in the movies. What is always funny when you know the city is how geographically messed up the scenes are.
Another one for the list. I believe in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spike and Dru visited Prague off screen shortly before their appearance on the show. Apparently Dru was nearly killed there.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on the name Bohemia. The term envokes a medieval connection for me like the castle and Karl's bridge does. Is it justs a geographical term for the western 2/3rds of the country or does it have more meaning?
Czechia is a very useful short version. And seeing as you yourself said "he's a guy from Czech" (i.e., an adjective, similar to saying, "he's a guy from Slovak or from German), might be a time to get in the habit of using Czechia ;)
i am quite sure, that in one of the episodes of HIMYM, when Lilly and Marshall meet at an airport, One of the Six-packs of beer shown is also a Czech brand.
I didn't know about this Big Bang Theory thing but in Greece Czech Republic is called "Τσεχία" and it literally translates to Czechia. Most school books, maps and tour guides written in Greek call this country "Czechia" and only a few mention the name "Τσεχική Δημοκρατία", which literally translates into "Czechian Democracy".
Been to Prague a couple of times and love it. Watch you often, great informative stuff! Just wanted to say that most Americans think Colbert sucks. Once at a pub they muted the sound on the TV during his show and the patrons were ad-libbing what he was saying. Needless to say they were not very flattering to Cobert but were much funnier.
They also mentioned it on Friends later on, in The One With the Red Sweater. Ross: My Uncle Murray came up to you and handed you a check. And then you said, 'Why do they call it a check? Why not a Yugoslavian?'
This is for those who don't know: the reason why the Czech Republic is mentioned many times in Hollywood media is that it serves as a cost-effective location for shooting exteriors and interiors of other famous European landmarks and cities, such as Paris, for years.

You should look up what 420 is code for in the US. Some debate on the history of how it started, but it makes perfect sense that Snoop would know it.
Yep I heard it has to do with the time people smoke weed at 4:20 so it became a code. That’s why he would know.

The one name that you SHOULDN'T use however is "Czech" since that is an adjective and not a name of a country xD

Well, actually, the name 'Czechia' wasn't introduced later. :) It was an official short geographical name of the country since 1993 and the word itself goes back to 17th century. It just wasn't used for official presentation of our country because of political reasons, but you can look it up in the UN archives from '93.

Just 4 days away
And the game show is set up so one member of the team (Martha Stewart, in this case) has the answers in front of them, and must describe them (without saying them) in such a way that the other team member (Snoop Dogg here) says the correct ones. Here all of the answers were marijuana-themed (weed, roach, 420). We can instead be impressed that Martha Stewart knows the country calling code for the Czech Republic (which is not beyond the realm of possibility). Within the context of the themed answers, "420" was really the only thing Snoop could have said in reply.
Lol that’s not true 420 relates to the police code used in LA for POT.

Yeah, Chechia sounds to me weird but it is maybe just me
I loved the constant mentions of Czechoslovakia in Monster. Kinda sad you did not mention it, even tho it is not as well known as those other shows.
@@Kobylia I am a Czech and I use "Czechia" exclusively, so speak for yourself.

He focuses on dismissing Czechia so much that he uses all other incorrect forms of the name instead...it's a bit of a disappointment.
Rep means "prick" in all Balkan countries- a beautiful abbreviation!

10:20 Činoherní klub is actually a theatre.

The film "Jojo Rabbit " was filmed in Czechia.
What happened with the taxiscam video's? Haven't seen this channel for a while and it came back in my recommended video's. I wanted to see what followed up after the interview you had with the taxi boss and couldn't find the video's anymore.

Also "Grimm" has mentioned Czech Republic or Prague throughout the series. Makes sense, since it's vaguely based on the works of the Grimm brothers.
I was watching today "House of Cards" S06E03, and there was mention about one of characters (Tom Yates) "uses his credit card in Prague".
Speaking of John Candy, Czechoslovakia plays an important role in the movie Stripes.
"When I say Czechia I get blank stares." good... you should be saying Czech Republic...
@@sleepete12 OK
@@sleepete12 I'll never get why are some people so hung up on using the full 'Czech Republic'. We would never say 'Slovak Republic', 'United States of America'(instead of just US or America) or 'Russian Federation'. So why is it so bad to shorten the Czech Republic as well? Hell, we even use 'Česko' instead of the full 'Česká Republika' in our own damn language.
@@microcolonel Don't listen to him. For some, Czechia is rather new and unusual, but it is the correct name.
@@PradedaCech Yeah, I have confidence in myself on this one, just don't like to get too into that sort of thing lol.
In Gilmore Girls, there was also mentioned the spliting of Czechoslovakia.
Zapomněl jsi na Disneyovskej seriál Gargoylové (nevím, jestli ho dávali i v češtině). Jedna z epizod se odehrává v Praze, kde se setkávají s Golemem.
The one person to answer your tshirt question is not the actor but the prop master for that episode of How I met your mother. Check the credits ✅
Did you know that the composer of Miami Vice‘s „Crocketts Theme“ is Czech? ;)

He's the only Czech to ever reach #1 Billboard charts (with Miami Vice Theme) - Jan Hammer
Is it justs a geographical term for the western 2/3rds of the country or does it have more meaning?
that was really interesting btw, watching it from Prague, arrived yesterday
Mission Impossible features Prague heavily
The Greeks are intelligent people, evcharisto!
@@sulista-consulting To clarify my statement, it wasn't a statement about whether it's good or bad, it's just how the Greeks call the Czech Republic.
@@nickmanistef2371 isn't it logical to call countries by their short names?😉
9:50 loved the reference 😂
Been to Prague a couple of times and love it. Watch you often, great informative stuff! Just wanted to say that most Americans think Colbert sucks. Once at a pub they muted the sound on the TV during his show and the patrons were ad-libbing what he was saying. Needless to say they were not very flattering to Cobert but were much funnier.
They also mentioned it on Friends later on, in The One With the Red Sweater.
Ross: My Uncle Murray came up to you and handed you a check. And then you said, 'Why do they call it a check? Why not a Yugoslavian?'
There's an entire K-drama series set in Prague: Lovers in Prague (프라하의 연인)
