    To re-enforce the neck of the ball, could make a version that has a tunnel in it that would accept a 2 or 3mm bolt threaded down the center? A compression fit, or even a bit of glue should be enough to hold it in, but you could even thread down into a captive nut or heat-set if tightness was desired. The metal piece going down the center should add a lot of strength where needed.

      That's an idea. I'd have to try it out.

    I've been invested in this system for awhile and I really love where PrintABlok is heading. Those wheels on the mech have me imagining a Transformer-like mech that actually transforms which would be super cool.

    Looks like you had a ball working on this part! I love solutions like that. It's like solving a puzzle.
    I feel that the standard pitch would actually matter on some models. That shows up when building with LEGO all the time.

      I'm really glad. I was worried that animation was wasted effort. It was a lot of rendered frames. Took, like, 30 minutes to render, and it took me a couple of renders to get it right.

    Sets of components seems like a good approach. A set of 5-10 Heads, a set of 5-10 Arms, weapons and attachments..... then each expansion is nearly exponential in its addition of new variety.

  • @hfog
    @hfog Год назад +1

    Hey Joe. Love it. For the problem on the neck strength, you might consider inserting very thin voids inside the neck so that when the slicer slices the part, it sees the entire area in the neck as perimeter. That will result in effectively 100% infill at that point in the model. It's a trick that I've seen used a lot. For example, look at some of the parts in the Voron Tap and the Voron Stealthburner.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  Год назад +1

      I've done that in the past. In this case printing with 3 shells usually fills it in, but in this case a single tiny hole down the middle might actually do that.
      Ironic that to make it stronger, we poke holes in it.

    My first thought was immediately pointing to the Virtual On series. Those are some of my favorite robots and their blocky style would fit perfectly with printrbloc. I would highly suggest checking it out for inspiration.
    But if you really want to get attention, I would absolutely suggest making a legally distinct Zaku. Zaku's are probably the second-most well-known robots in the mecha genre after Evangelion. And the lore behind it is that was designed all around customizability.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  Год назад +1

      Oh, I love Virtual On. Under rated series.
      I will google Zaku.

  • @VagabondTE

    Here's a thought.. Could you make a printrbloc segment that is one or two blocks wide, but slides, and then maybe snaps, into being two or three blocks wide? Or at least adding half a block. Because that action when combined with pivot blocks, and parts like your shoulder sleeves would genuinely create Transformer mechanics for your system. Extend-r-Bloc

    • @orsonjgmail
      @orsonjgmail Год назад +1

      I'm not sure if I completely follow what you are describing, but this sliding block might be what you are looking for. www.printables.com/model/245557-printablok-sliding-rails

    • @VagabondTE
      @VagabondTE Год назад

      @@orsonjgmail That's really cool. I like that the rail still uses the same connectors. But if it helps you visualize what I was pitching, imagine a printrbloc that looked like a Shulker Box from Minecraft. Just a block that can get a little longer. My thinking was that it would fit with other blocks, but when the robot "transforms" the block extends a little bit to make more clearance for arms and whatnot. Though you could probably get a similar effect with just two ball and socket or that awesome rail block. It was just a thought.

    • @orsonjgmail
      @orsonjgmail Год назад +1

      @@VagabondTE That makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying. If someone designs something like that, it would be a great addition.

    The BenQ camera has unstable white balance. You can see the saturation on your face is changing. It's also doing poorly with the "dominant color" situation with the green screen. Your shirt and beautiful gray hair are very green.
    Not sure if it's the camera or something else causing the issues in the picture in picture view (like at 9:00).

    Voltron or Power Rangers Megazord would be a good fit, here are the reasons why : mix of beasts and mech - a real pletora of colours and parts, transforming/ combining might be a fun challenge that isnt impossible as the designs are really blocky and simple, recognisability - most people know what these robots are, many different colours and a great show off convention piece - can be assembled on the table and if someone is interested you can pop an arm off, transform it and hand it to someone to see .

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  Год назад

      Agreed.
      In fact back when the Beasts were made, the design of the lion was inspired by the white tiger zord and the dragon by the red thunder zord. Both of which also had robot forms.

    If you want a cohesive theme for mech toys, may I suggest "mechs vs global warming's rising sea levels"?

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  Год назад +1

      Aquatic themed mechs? Very cool.
      But to be honest, any sort of messaging I'm going to use in these toys is probably going to be limited to 30 second PSAs at the end of their eventually Saturday morning half hour toy ads.

    Ball joints are not new. In fact they came out in the 90s. They were call B-Joint , made in Japan by the plastic co. Wave. those connected perfectly with the T-bone joints at the time.

      No, ball joints are not new. Nor are they new for printablok. This is just a new version for printablok.
      Technially, the first ball joints are in our bones, but those don't hold on quite the same way.
