Find out how it got so famous and see the history behind. Berghain is still growing and will likely continue to play a major role in Berlin's nightlife culture.

So you got to be judged before you can enter the atmosphere of no judgement?
The world is a crazy place
Exactly. There is something deep wrong with this
There is no place on earth with no judgment, unless you are in some place between people who are just like you. That’s the point of so called “no judgment”. So... keep looking. Good luck!
Its like not tolerating intolerance. Where is Ur point?
man if they didn't do it berghain would be filled with people that look more than they dance and aren't there for the music (or the gay sex)
So I grew up in Westberlin and I never became much of a party goer because of these strict door policies. It took me about an hour and a half just to get to the techno clubs in East-Berlin and then you have to wait an hour or longer just to be turned away because "not today". Then you go to the next club and it is the same thing. So, you left the house to go out and dance/have a good night with your friends but it is 4-5 hours later and you haven't even got into a club yet. The night is pretty much over at this point because people in Berlin (at least my social circle) don't leave their houses until like 11pm or midnight to go to a club, 4-5 hours later it's around 4 or 5 am. It is super frustrating. I understand that door policies are necessary to limit the number of people because any given club has a specific capacity of people it can hold (so that it remains safe and fire exits aren't blocked and such) but I have been in line before with 3 friends and there were only 3 guys in front of us; no one else joined the queue. We had to wait 45 minutes before the bouncers let the guys in and then told us straight away as we walked up (we didn't even have time to say hello) "not today" and he immediately ushered us to leave. We basically stood 2 meters away from him for almost an hour so he could have told us in the beginning that we wouldn't get in. Would have saved us time as we had to wait over an hour at the next club, where we did get in but only after the bouncer asked every single one of us who we had come to see (from the DJs). Obviously, we didn't know any of the DJs well so we just said some names that were on the list.
I have lived abroad for years now and gone out here and there was never a problem with "getting in". I disagree with the argument that Berlin clubs have to protect their clients exclusivity because everyone who goes to a club pretends they are someone else, cooler, better, than they really are. This so called lifestyle that people speak of, is just an excuse for shitty behavior. I have heared about tourists in Berlin who were rejected at the doors of clubs even though they had bought an online ticket (15EUR pp.) before, no money back, nothing. The way I know Berlin clubs, I am not surprised if this is true.
Contrary to "protecting the safe space so people can be who they truly are" in Berlin techno clubs, every single time I have gone out I experienced a very hostile atmosphere. As soon as you walk up to any club, not just the bouncers but the people in line check you out and "assess" you. It is super creepy. No part of this tells me that I can be who I am because then I won't get in so I have to pretend to be someone else. Also, I just watched a different video about Berghain and people in the comments were boasting with how many times they had got in. One girl had apparently got in 3 times. Is this really what we base our confidence and self-worth on? Unfortunately, I have to say that I think it is arrogance more than anything else that fuels these door policies. The psychology behind it is simple. You aren't anyone special, famous (and let's be real most of us are just normal people) but you get your self-worth from belonging to a "elite group" of people, from the exclusivity that you are one of the chosen ones and the bouncers get off on the power they have on the people who want to get in. It#s 100% in their control if you get in or not and they don't even have to give a reason, don't like your face, disagree with your choice of hairstyle: BYE!
Now, this isn't the fault of techno, just the system in Berlin. Techno in Amsterdam is great and we always had a good time because when you plan to go to a club, you know you will get in. Techno is the vibe and the feeling inside you, when you dance or just move with the feeling the music creates inside of you. The rest is just unnecessary drama.
Of course, all of this is my subjective view and I am sure there are many people who will disagree, especially those who frequently go to night clubs and belong to the "elite" but when you belong to the small percentage of favored individuals, there ain't much for you to complain about anyways, right? ;)
This completes my completely unnecessary, noone-was-asking-for-it, piece of opinion. Good day to all!
P.S. Find value in yourself and not in the times you've been let into Berghain!
Julib Tulip thanks
Berlin is a pretentious hell hole.
Not suprising
So I grew in the south of Europe and I never had any problem to get in into any of the Berlin's most infamous clubs. Berghain included. I don't care about being part of an elite and techno music is not even my favourite kind of music. I don't know you but I am sure that there's something definitely wrong with your attitude and I am definitely a fan of door policies if they will help in keeping the wrong vibe out.
I've unfortunately only visited Berlin once (definitely planning on going after corona blows over) but the one time I went to techno club there we got in quite easily (and we weren't a super hip bunch either). However, the club we went to was Tresor, which has the reputation for being tourist-friendly.
I didn't know it was this bad in all these Berlin clubs, but if it is I can definitely understand your annoyance. It goes against the whole notion of rave-culture: being yourself and being free to do what you like and celebrate love. I also don't buy the whole "protecting a safe space for the clientele" because it's often easy to spot potential troublemakers, and people are faking being part of a specific subculture just to get in anyway. Aren't there more clubs that have a more lenient door policy, maybe the more underground clubs that don't attract a massive crowd??
I agree about Amsterdam (and all other Dutch cities I've gone to raves/parties/clubs) Most places are easy to get into, and it doesn't detract from the vibe the club-owner wants to create (most people that aren't part of the target audience will just leave when they notice it's not their preferred kind of party). In all my life, I've only been denied entrance twice: once because the bouncer was offended by me speaking English to him despite being a native Dutchman (I did that so a German guy who was with me could understand the conversation) and once because I was to young (20 at the time, the club was for 21+). I've also been thrown out twice here: once because I smoked on the dance-floor (a bit strict imo, but fairly reasonable) and once because I wore a vest as a guy (totally unreasonable, but I didn't really want to be in that shit club anyway, I was only there to come get some of my friends. It was one of those trashy clubs where they play Reggaeton all the time and the dj can't mix. Women there were allowed to wear much less than me btw)
Why did you need to write a whole essay
Berghain is about as underground as McDonald's at this point.
And both have a clown as a maskot (Sven Marquardt)...
@@lolitaras22 huehuehueee
The doormen there seem like cunts.
I guess you guys got rejected at the door.. 🤣
@@noisomeholland hahahah exactly my thoughts.
Yea I understand the door policy it protects the people inside and the people outside that dont know what they are walking into.
incredibly patronising thing to say
@@greatfelixo Yea, you would not get in. sorry bro. I was there and I can confirm it is the coolest club I have ever been to. Def. going back
It’s not about getting in it’s keep the monsters inside and not letting the so called free thinkers from getting eaten alive
@@miniminni Nah sorry mate, however cool that club might be, I think the whole exclusive door policy just creates a phenomenon of people trying to be someone they're not, just to get in. I'm not even going to try, I don't go clubbing to be judged on some vague first impression, I go to raves to have fun, feel free to be myself and have fun. I do understand the policy of leaving your phone (to ensure people can be weird without being on display for the whole world to see) but keeping people who don't fit some unclear notion of coolness out doesn't really serve a purpose except for creating a feeling of scarcity to attract people.
It’s simple you have to be part of a satanic cult. They all know each other and roll in the same circles. The things that go on in there sounds like a satanic ritual or rituals happening. Drinking blood urine eating feces having group sex all that is standard in satanic/luciferian practices. The more vile of a human being you are the higher you rise. If you ever watched eyes wide shut it sounds just like the place even looks like the mansion it was filmed at. It even sounds like what it takes to get in but if you’re not part of them and don’t know the password I guess you have no chance of getting in and if you happen to sneak in like tom cruise did in the film he was almost killed.
A place of “no judgement “, where you get judged in 1 second by the guy at the door.
No judgement just breeds degeneracy. The only reason I would try to get in is because of my morbid curiosity but I would probably be extremely uncomfortable. When you get too deep into the rabbit hole, you start accepting really unhealthy behavior. One thing is dancing like nobody is looking, another thing is to dance like you want to get as much attention as possible.
Mit dem Akzent hättest du auch gleich Deutsch sprechen können

@@petar1008 perfection is the perfect ground for a judgement less space
Got in, but to be honest Idk if it does live up to the hype. I'm just disgusted by that door policy in Berlin. It seems like everywhere else the Techno scene is a place for everyone. I love that ppl from all ages and backgrounds come together. Feels like Berlin lost track of that.
1337HaxXx0r is strict door policy common in Berlin techno clubs?
dork xx very much, not just berghain
That is because Techno in Berlin is something completely different than in the rest of the world. Techno in Berlin is not just the clubs and the music. It is a whole lifestyle. Techno is noticeable in every part of the berlin rave scene/people’s life. And that is why there is strict door policy. Because berlin clubs, and especially the harder techno clubs, want to create a space where people can live out their dreams and their inner desires. And it definitely kills the vibe when there are a lot of people in the club who dont really belong there and just want to see a berlin techno club from the inside.
@@brln.lichtenberg.4693 how do you tell whether someone "belongs there" based on just looking at them? i've never been turned away at berghain but i saw some people who were. guess what - I'm white. some of those turned away were not.

We went to Berghain last weekend. It was awesome. It's the happiest place on earth. The vibe between the main floor and Panorama bar makes a nice break. Great music, the best.
Wish I could go I'm across the pond.
I need to go inside again. This place is crazy.
How to go inside please help 😢
nice work. greets dawg ;))
This is awesome dude, please more on other Berlin clubs!!! 🙌
You’re damn right. My case is quite a funny one. A friend of mine came over from Barcelona and so we wanted to give it a shot at the Berghein. I was aware of certain attitudes to avoid in the queue, such as getting loud or pretentious, but really doubted that with my kacky pants and red new balance snickers would ever made it inside, to be honest. So finally I am in front of the lad in the door who asks me how many are we. I say two. The guy first stares at me and then looks back to the bold guy behind as of asking for approval/opinion, or simply to leave it to him. The bold guys says yes and we are in. Now I realize they might have thought we were gay, which we are not.
Once inside they empty all your pockets and put stickers in the camera of the phone. My buddy had some eye drops, cause the sucker smokes pot frequently. They ask him to pour some droplets onto his eyes, which he does. Then the guy asks him to do it yet again.
The music and atmosphere is for tecno purists. Real hard core stuff you will never hear anywhere else. That was an awesome cultural night indeed.
they asked about the droplets bc it usually is how they bring in LSD
@@Yobott they are not worried about some acid, they want to avoid ghb which is a way bigger problem in clubs
My wife and I got inside 3 tries out of 4 on a trip to Berlin 10 years ago. On the failed attempt the bouncer was downright apologetic. Almost 50 years old I had been christened as cool.
I'm doing some research on the dress code for Berghain. Not that there's a chance for me go there, I don't even live in the same country, I'm just very curious. So, people that went in, what was your style like?

So, what did you wear?
@@zoey__m thong with some heels
Yeah, because you’re a gay man.
It’s a sexist club
It's not about what u wear.
My problem with the Berghain is its selection based purely on the look. I'm from Strasbourg and a regular on the Berlin techno scene, I look younger than my age (I'm 25 and people regularly call me under 20). However I have been passionate about techno since my high school, I have exclusively listened to it for 10 years now, and I have been to all the most selective parties in Berlin (early Herrensaunas, early pornceptuals, raum vier, Sisyphos, kater blau etc. .). I tried 3 times to enter the Berghain, the 3 times were a failure, which is not that much of a deal in itself, but I just find it unfortunate that the physical criterion is so predominant. For all the other "selective" gigs that I have done, when the bouncer has a doubt about me (which I can understand), he asks me questions and I always get in. At Berghain, zero questions, just a deep stare for 20 seconds then a famous "heute leider nicht". In short, all that to say that I find it a bit sad to have to wait to have a beard to enter a club, after that it's just my impression of a non-Berliner who has to travel 8 hours by train to try the club.
None of the club or parties series you mentioned are particular "selective"
I feel so bad about all the incredible music from the last decade that you've missed out on while listening to exclusively techno.
And what you mentioned are sex party’s/queer party’s! Not so much sex in Berghain.. it’s a myth.. music is the center of attention..
Some still pictures are Krafwerk / Tresor though..

Is this Brüno?
I think now it is more a "I want to be authentic person - club" than it is supposed to be
2:16 I hate when someone tells me what not to do, but now, I have you even more than that 😂😂
What’s the track name is this video?
I've been there many times.... Long story short: If it's already mentioned in common tourist maps chances are high it's overrated.
Yeah I'd rather go to a club that is "exclusive" by being only known by your niche, rather than one that's exclusive by rejecting people under some arbitrary notion of not being cool enough.
@@KarlSnarks underground inclusivity ❤️

What's the closing song please?
There’s a skate spot across the street I would hangout everyday and only once maybe on a Sunday morning did I ever see anybody at this building. Everybody dressed in black leather. Lol. My classmates said 1.5 - 3 hr wait but it was worth it.
I haven't been there yet but perhaps some day. Facecontrol is indeed important for such venues. I've been going to small and large techno parties for quite a while now, and I notice how hard techno and psytrance scene is slowly becoming mainstream, 'cause many ppl who get inside nowadays simply don't fit in. Some barely dance, some are too restrained and afraid to get down, the others are simply behaving "too normal", treating it like another pop music club, and the list goes on. From what I've heard about Berghain so far, they try to let just a certain kind of public inside to keep a desired atmosphere and that is totally understandable.
I got in for about 1 min but got kicked out when I tried to pay by card 🙃

It's legendary,
I'm an American who's mother was born in Germany in 1963 and lived there until she got pregnant with me in 1991 from my father who was an American Marine stationed in Germany. They moved to America and had me in 1992. I do however have duel citizenship in America and Germany, which I absolutely love. I've only been inside the actual Berghain club 4 times and each time it was certainly a lot of fun. However, is it any more fun than any of the other classic Berlin clubs that are around, or is it essentially just the reputation and all of the "rumors" surrounding Berghain, ya know? Personally I think that it's the latter.
It's more niche to visit Berlin and not attempt to get in.

My mate made me waste about 4 hours standing outside of it only to not get in, I said I'd rather go do anything else, it's not even like it's particularly good techno in there, and the fact that bouncer, of all people, is the one who determines who gets in. I'd have laughed at how lame the whole thing was if I hadn't been subjected to hours of standing around in the cold, moaning about how miserable the experience was, only to be rejected because I wasn't dressed like someone who thought he was cool in 2003 but everyone outside of Berlin just thinks looks like a douche.
