The Lighthouse ends up looking like a Wes Anderson movie.

Especially the 4th shot, with the little wooden shed. We used Moonrise Kingdom LUT for that one, so it doesnt’s surprise. 😅

For that scene, you should make it where everything but the little girl's coat is in color.

All modern black & white movies seem pretentious. B&W was a technical limitation of its time. The real world isn't B&W, so everything that takes place in the real world which is B&W is pointless and destroys any immersive feeling unless it is meaningfully mixed into the plot.
It's understandable & okay for old movies, but not for modern ones.

  • @justicegear85

I don’t agree to colorize everything, but from a technical aspect, this is great! Like in Citizen’s Kane, it’s kinda cool to find his tie was blue. I dived into colorization like a decade ago and learned a few things about the process while not from digital perspective but from straight film and it was really interesting.

I think almost everything should be dyed. I watch more old black and white films than anyone I've ever met, yet I still think they'd be better dyed.

I always wondered how old black and white silent movies would be like if they were made now in the style of a 2020s movie and Morden day colour audio movies as old silent black and white movies.

I'm not a colorization fan either, but this video was intriguing. I wonder how Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless and Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha would have looked in color instead of black and white. Any possibility of exploring either one of those?

This isn't a real human narrator is it? I wouldn't have thought anything was off but "We'll apply our 'Her' LUT" at 2:14 jumped out to me. Like that's not how you'd read that cos in that sentence "Her" is acting as a proper noun, not a pronoun.

Just a guess but since they said they were using an AI color tool chances are it is trained on millions of images on the internet and it takes its best guess. It probably observes a scene for some key elements like you said grass, sky, a sailors coat etc, makes assumptions based on what it’s been trained on and applies the colors.

I have sequence that I heavily despise in terms of color grading, the film im talking about "Pirates of the caribbean: Dead men tell no tales'' You see there is a flashback in the film where they went with a sepia kind of look, while in the early trailers it was a beautifull caribbean sea where the CG blended great with the background elements. In my opinion the flashback screwed itself over by radically changing the look probably to show that it was in fact a flashback and not something that happened mere minutes ago. But we as an audience are not stupid.
My question to you, is that I have tried fixing the color grading so many times but I lack the skill and talent to do so. I was wondering if perhaps you could take a look at it and see what kind of magic you can bring to the screen with a regrade :)
