  • Possibly the worst Star Wars show ended this week, and it's angered quite a few people. Not only was the writing atrocious, but it also committed some massive canon crimes.
    Let's a have a quick look at why NOT breaking canon is so important. Something you'd think Disney should know about. Oh well.
    Enjoy!

    Stop treating Disney as canon.
    It's that simple.
    They do not determine what is canon.
    A corporate piece of paper does not determine what is canon.
    A marketing department does not determine what is canon.
    We do.
    And we need to go back to referring to Legends as canon, and disregard Disney's franchise timeline and universe as the fanfic-tier abortion that it is. This is all it will take to break the beast, and I wish that more people would have the backbone to do this when corporations run roughshod over once-beloved settings and franchises and universes.

    There's a quote somewhere where Dave Filoni says something to the effect of "if you liked it, its canon. If you didn't, don't worry about it?" - and he and Jon Fav are about the only ones I think "get" Star Wars - even if people disagree they wrote good stories themselves, I think we all can acknowledge that Filoni understands Lucas better than most.
    But... good writing certainly = more people liking and more people liking - stronger canon.
    Good video.

      @VeternovaYT  Месяц назад +1

      @@writingref I guess my question then is: what if someone likes 2 Star Wars series but they contradict each other? Are they both good or both bad? Surely it’s then which one is better integrated into the universe …
      At that point what even is canon?

    • @writingref
      @writingref Месяц назад

      @@VeternovaYT Good question. In my opinion, one must compare and contrast what the creator, George Lucas, would want. I think there is a division at Lucasfilm - two warring factions. One faction understand Lucas and wants to continue the thematic storytelling of his legacy, and the other group are artists who feel that they have a right as artists to take Star Wars in whatever direction they wish. There are valid points to both points of view.
      However, I tend to side with "What Lucas would Want" being canon. Lucas himself did not dismiss the old EU stories, but what he did was rank cannon into a tier system. Movies and things he personally wrote were the prime canon, superseding everything.
      Lucas rarely declares an opinion on modern day Star Wars. After the Force Awakens, he is famous for complaining that he sold the franchise to "White Slavers" - but ever since that statement he has remained relatively quiet about Disney-Lucasfilm products. However, he DOES show up on set to their productions. And I think its pretty revealing which projects he has shown up at. There is a lot of footage of him on the Set of the Mandalorian and Ahsoka, and he also showed for the Luke scenes in Book of Boba. He was on set for "Solo". Unless it was in secret, or if I am missing something, he was absent for every other project except those.
      All of this is to rant that, even if we don't know his opinion on a project, there exists plenty of interview material over the last 40 years where a Star Wars scholar can piece together what he might consider to be more canon than not.
      Personally, I think the Acolyte misses the Lucas canon check. Not only does it misunderstand themes of light and dark, but it is also is afraid of the word "Midichlorians". The manipulation of midichlorians to create life is something I think Lucas considers to be dark and against nature. (ie trying to control nature). The fact that the midichlorians responded to the efforts of the Sith to control them by creating a vergence as far away from them as possible (on a remote desert world) is one of those original ideas I think was in the "Journal of the Whils" . (At one point, the idea of the midichlorians were just called "The Whils")
      Therefore, when the acolyte treats this creation of life as something which was achieved as an act of love between two women . . . it disregards the thematic canon of Lucas. The problem is not that it challenges the status of Anakin as the chosen one. The chosen one can be a re-occurring prophecy or myth. The problem is with theme.
      I hope I didn't rant too long. lol

    Still question when will Star Wars end? To me true canon is the GL six movies with a mix of expanding universe and some Disney material that I like that go between and before the movies but Return of the Jedi is the happy ending of Star Wars. Most problem the current canon is trying connect everything but not let it own thing and sometimes they to self insert themselves in the story like Acolyte.

    It's a kinda weird to see people arguing about Star Wars "canon", it seems like we're talking about the Bible or something.
    When I was a boy playing with my Star Wars action figures, the Galactic Empire joined forces with the Decepticons to destroy the Rebel Alliance while Goku was trained by Master Yoda on Dagobah.
    Meanwhile, Vegeta discovers that the Empire destroyed the Saiyan Planet with the Death Star and travels to Tatooine to find Obi-Wan Kenobi and form a partnership to kill Darth Vader.
    However, Vegeta was captured by Boba Fett and imprisoned in Jabba the Hutt's palace, which he escapes after transforming into the giant ape Osaru in a triple fullmoon night and completely destroys Jabba's palace, then Obi-Wan shows up in the middle of chaos and cuts off Vegeta's tail with his lightsaber.
    So relax guys, it's just a fictional space adventure universe created by a nerd in the 70's, you're taking this a little too seriously.
    We have a real war going on in Ukraine right now and another one going on in Israel/Palestine with serious chances of escalating into a conflict of catastrophic proportions and you are debating about space wars in fictional universes?? WTF?????

    I will break a lot of hearts here, but...
    Most Legends things suck big time.
    While the books might be jewels, the amount of garbage thrown into the lore by the desire to intensify the story more and more (and the audience not yet used to the constantly growing stakes and new superpowers every Tuesday), especially by comic books, is overwhelming.
    True, maybe Disney might have included more into the lore (I don't like the way they culled the whole New Jedi Order and Kyle Katarn seemingly without a chance to return) but you need to break some eggs to make an omelette. (also 3 last movies just don't make sense lol)
    But
    The likes of Andor, Mandalorian, the ending of Clone Wars, Ahsoka, and akchktually, even Acolyte (although somewhat a disappointment) are spinning the story so good that I started to treat Star Wars like a thing again, not something intended to the people who worked in the now Rust Belt in their 30s in the 80s.
    P.S. I don't really like the whole movies for kids things like resistance and, to some extent, rebels, but again, it's because of the censored and "intended for kids" manner that I hated even more as a kid, the lore behind the slapped-and-sanitized storyline is good.

      Broy, Legends is just a meaningless word because if you say most of Legends may have sucked, that is your opinion. If you did not read more into it, then you fail to realize that it adheres to George's canon whether it takes place further back and out, and TCW failed to make a point.

    • @Раковийсупець
      @Раковийсупець Месяц назад

      @@mazkeraid4039 IDK, TCW did make a point, and was a pretty good connect to the movies, I would say better than anything in Legends.
      There was a lot of 80s trash in Legends, and I would argue that them Legends did not really represent George's vision, or at least not his late 90s vision. Remember, when EP 4 came out he had no good idea around any canon himself, and it shows in the "canon" of that time that is just a collection of typical comic exaggerations of the time.
      (again some things in Legends are true gems and some I grieve for but most of it is not)
      Put it that way -- everyone knows Dorothy from Oz from the original Wizard of Oz, it is legendary and influenced a lot in world literature and had adaptations throughout the world.
      But who th remembers Captain Fyter from one of the later ones? And who is as excited about say Ozma from 3rd book as about Dorothy from 1st?
      If you want to build something that resembles real canon and not a mumbo-jumbo of new personas and plots for the sake of them out of Oz, you will probably leave only the first book in the new canon (or at least not past the 3rd one), and stitch it together as good as you can.
      TCW was what sparked interest around the Star Wars for a lot of people outside a diminishing hard core of fans, including mine. So it only made sense to make it the stitch to sew the new canon together because the one that was there was unworkable and silly, full of overpowered magic from times where average people were so simple that just making things intensify captured their attention.
      Actually, the most dear parts of Legends to me lie outside of TCW and Rebels and rather lie with the new Jedi order and the whole Remnant thing and that was ruined by the new trilogy which I hate xD

    • @mazkeraid4039
      @mazkeraid4039 Месяц назад

      @@Раковийсупець I disagree with that sentiment, there are things in TCW that do not line up with the movies either, like say Anakin not having a Padawan, Barriss being de-aged and her character being assassinated, Grievous continuously being made as a non-threat, Asajj Ventress's origins changed, Aurra Sing’s lack of force sensitivity, along with Ahsoka Tano’s inconsistent character motivation and underdeveloped characters that is not her, I can go on. Not speaking much with all of the Expanded Universe, but despite what you think, it actually had the effort to tie these events together, take a look at a few pages that show the chronological events if you have any questions about it.

    What I think you don’t understand is that canon and legends are literally two seperate universes. The Plagueis book does not dictate his canon story, and Mundi’s age that was questionable even in legends does not speak for his canon age, so therefore canon has not been broken. @@VeternovaYT You made the distinction, but then proceeded to complain about how they’ve changed aspects of the novel even though they really haven’t even done so yet. Disney only has to be accountable for keeping continuity on their own works (which admittedly is made hard by creators like Dave Filoni who destroys other’s work each time he makes a show). Legends is now a seperate timeline that holds no bearing on the canon continuity except for the parts that have been adapted in. But also, I don’t see how you can claim Disney has changed Plagueis for the worst from literally like four seconds of screen time? Even the age point you brought up is irrelevant, because in the novel it was ambiguous.

      @@Freddy3763I just want to say, even though Legends isn’t canon, I believe it the Acolyte still undermines the prequels, example in eps 5 Qimir destroys a like 10 Jedi knights it’s clear aswell that he was a sith obviously with a red lightsaber and now we know the council was informed of this why is it then in Phantom Menace the council is finding it hard to trust Qui Gon when he informs the council right that he encountered a sith on Tatooine. What makes it even worse Ki-Adi-Mundi who’s kinda just shoe horned in now has a different birthday and was aware of all of this before even the council and in the prequels he says “the sith have been extinct for a millennia” meaning 1000 years when Acolyte takes place 200 or so years before the prequels. That to me is extremely lazy writing for the sake of fan services, it gets even worse now because Acolyte pretty much retcon Anakin being the chosen one, now we know people can just manipulate the force at they’re will to create a being purely from the force it make Anakins story bleak and pointless even though he’s chosen by the force itself know we you can manufacture a chosen one if your a gay witch😂😂😂 it’s horrible writing, ik nobody asked for my opinion but I couldn’t resist have a good day.
