    The problem with your test is that no snake is gonna sit in that circle because he doesn't want to be there regardless of whether or not he hates mothballs. If he is trying to get away he'll cross those moth balls so... 🤷🏾‍♂️

      Jerry Lightbourne if you read my other comments I cover that and talk about how I have relocated snakes from properties that are covered in Mothballs. I have photos of snakes laying in Mothballs at relocates. Also if you look through the comments I posted research papers on this subject also. This video is just a short field test video. Mothballs and other snake repellents 100% do not work and if you read the scientific research I’ve posted links to you will see it’s scientifically proven not to work.

    The way this was always explained to me was the moth balls were used to discourage critters the snakes pursue.... As a result, they "deter" snakes from hunting in a given area...such as a shed, under a trailer, etc.

    • @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran
      @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran  4 года назад +2

      It’s a good theory but mothballs aren’t effective against things like rats either evident by the massive amounts of rat droppings found in many areas where mothballs are used. Also snakes eat more than just the critters that are effected by mothballs.

    • @jamesvatter5729
      @jamesvatter5729 4 года назад +2

      @@JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran Yeah, where I saw it actually seem to work was on chipmunks and mice under a trailer skirting and in a shed on a property with an adjoining oak forest. My guess is the bugs they were chasing didn't like the balls, so the rodents retreated to the woods with the snakes chasing them. But, like you said, just a "theory" based on old local stories.

    Well Mr. Davis. I've read both sides of the story on the internet and from my personal experience, we didn't have a snake problem after they were used. Here is my story. My parents bought a house in a heavily wooded area. After winter, we began to see about five or six rattle snakes each day around the property. These were huge and an average of one and half meters. Someone told my parents to spread mothballs around the property. After about a week of spreading mothballs, we didn't see any more snakes. We lived there for eight years and never saw any kind of snake for those eight years. Knowing that mothballs are so bad for the environment, I would chose a different method if I ever have a snake problem.

    Sulfur and mothballs DO work as a deterrent.
    Putting mothballs directly into the ground is a no no.
    But here is the safe way to do the sulfur mothball application:
    PART 1
    Take a dispoable plastic container that has a lid Punch holes in the container around the sides approx 2' from the bottom.
    Use about a cup of sulfur and about 6 mothballs on top in each and place around your property this will absolutely reduce snake sightings; and the mothballs will not enter the water table.
    PART 2
    About once a month in the warmer months in a 1-2 gallon pump sprayer fill 3/4 with water put about 1 oz of Cinnamon Bark oil and 1 oz of Clove oil (use high quality oils for this and not extracts) and a squirt dish detergent (to create an emulsion) and shake well.
    Spray this solution around your property.
    Doing this will abosolutely reduce the sanke issue around your property been doing this for years AND IT WORKS!
    The key is be consistent once you create and envirormnent the snakes do not like they'll hunt prey elsewhere and avoid your space.

    I'd like for you to test it in a different manner. I think your method didnt prove anything. 1st snake is trying to escape and the 2nd you made it move.
    I know you don't have to do what I say , I'm just challenging your point of view and I appreciate your concern for our environment buddy👍

    • @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran
      @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran  6 лет назад +1

      +charles salado the snake I made move wasn’t because it didn’t like mothballs. It was just a very calm Cottonmouth. As far as the method I used. I did it this way because it’s a quick and easily filmed situation. There have been multiple larger scale tests done but it’s not possible to video document those tests because the video would be hours upon hours long. There have been enough tests done to safely say Moth Balls have no effect on snakes. If you have used them and not seen snakes it’s just a coincidence for example my wife dumps her coffee grounds out the back door and guess what I’ve never seen any snakes back there. That doesn’t mean coffee repels snakes it just means I haven’t seen any and my wife dumps coffee grounds out the back door. That’s all it means. Not having a snake problem is not proof mothballs work. Hopefully I explained it in a way that helps you.

      Joseph B there have been many studies done on the effects of mothballs on snakes and the tests have proven that mothballs have zero ability to detour snakes. It is also illegal to use mothballs in this manner. The warnings on the package even state that it’s against EPA standards to use them for anything other than what the box says there intended for.

      LadyE100 your own words said it is a violation to use the product for anything not described on the box. That means using it to repel snakes is a violation. Snakes are not considered to be a pestilence because they don’t cause diseases and destroy crops or property. They actually eat the animals that do. This is going to be my final response to one of your comments due to the Fact that you just enjoy being argumentative and will not except anything except for what you believe to be true even though the facts say different. Did you know that there are thousands of people that believe the Earth is Flat? No matter what facts or evidence you give them they still deny the truth using the same king of logic and argument you and others try to use. I understand it’s hard to let go of tradition and the things our parents and grandparents may have taught us but in this case they were wrong and real science is on my side. I hope you can figure that out but I can’t change everyone. Folks like you make my job more exciting and I’ve enjoyed our discussion but it’s now time to walk away and let the truth speak for me. Good day.

    Mothballs will drive away most of the snake's prey animals and insects right?
    So possibly they will serve to keep the snakes away too because a snake isn't likely to hang around where there is no food?

    • @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran
      @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran  5 лет назад +1

      Robert G no sir. I actually just did a snake relocate yesterday at a house where the property and attic were infested with rats and a Ratsnake was chasing them around her attic and property. She had snake away spread all over her property and even in the attic but the rats and snakes were not bothered. Snake away contains both Mothball chemicals and sulfur plus other chemicals. I have video of all this if you want to drop an email address I can send it to.

    • @TrojanHorse1959
      @TrojanHorse1959 5 лет назад +1

      I'm surprised that it did not drive the rats away. I use mothballs to keep rats and mice out of my shop and they work great for that purpose. Since I started using them I have not seen a mouse or rat and no signs of them in my shop. Thank you for taking time to reply, I appreciate that.

    • @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran
      @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran  5 лет назад

      Robert G could be coincidence. The funny thing about proof is the lack of sightings of snakes and mice isn’t proof they work but finding them where the chemicals are used is proof they don’t work. Just the mechanics of it.

    • @TrojanHorse1959
      @TrojanHorse1959 5 лет назад

      Jeremy Davis, It's proof enough to me when they suddenly abandon a place they were frequenting often.
      My shop was overrun with mice and rats when I first moved into this place. Once I started using the mothballs around the shop, they all left and there have been no further signs of them as long as I don't forget to renew the mothballs. They were after the dog food I store in the shop, I don't think they would all suddenly just stop coming to a source of food.

      They absolutely will fine you if given the opportunity. Go ahead and drop your address if you don’t think so 😆. As far as Mothballs being effective for repelling snakes it’s just not true. This video was just a quick easy representation of the research done. Science has actually 100% proven they don’t work. To many folks take into account the horrible smell of Mothballs but fail to realize that snakes do not smell in the same sense we do. How bad or not something smells has zero effect on snakes. All Mothballs left laying around in this manor do is poison the local ecosystem and water run off. If you would like actual scientific documentation on this subject I will be glad to provide it.

      Ben Averitt just so you know you can get your dogs snake avoidance training. As far as repelling snakes you have to modify the habitat by keeping grass cut short, brush piles burned, trash picked up ect.. If it looks like a great place for prey items like mice, lizards, and frogs to live chances are snakes will be there hunting. You can also by hardware cloth to put around the fence on your property which will keep snakes out.

    • @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran
      @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran  5 лет назад

      Charles Mclean no. They were put inside the ring of Mothballs to show they will cross them and that they don’t slow them down therefore won’t prevent them on your property.
      You have to consider how snakes smell. They don’t smell like we do so no matter how bad something smells it doesn’t effect them like us. They actually taste there environment much more than smell. They deposit the chemical particles on the Jacobson’s organ in the roof of there mouth and then there brain interprets what the smell/taste is.
      I have literally found snakes laying in piles of Mothballs like there not even there. There’s plenty of science behind what I’m saying. Mothballs and other chemicals like sulfur have no effect on snakes.
      What those chemicals are is illegal to use as a repellent. The EPA will Levy large fines if you were to get caught.

      Kyle Bunch this is a controlled test which is very different than spreading mothballs all over your property and just leaving them there. These moth balls were picked up right after the test and properly disposed of. What makes them dangerous is when there just left out as a deterrent that doesn’t work and they have time to poison the environment. They end up being absorbed by wildlife and also get into the run off and much more. Big big big difference. By the way keep the comments family friendly. If it looks like a mouse would live there then a snake will be there to eat it so keep the property cleaned up and all brush burnt. Don’t leave piles of ten and boards laying around. Mothballs are stupid and ineffective , but this test is even stupider. You could make a circle of eagles and the snake is still going to race through it to get to safety. Do a real test! Put some lines in a natural environment, and show which direction snakes choose to go when not frightened (path to avoid, or opposite direction right through). OR treat it more like an actual yard and put a mouse in the middle of the circle and the snakes on the outside. This video just ruins your credibility the way it's currently set up.

  • @johnbartley7101

    Great information! I googled the question, "Do moth balls keep snakes away?" and this was the top search result. I wonder if the people that did that search were of the same mind set that I had. Since it seems that snakes use smell above all of their other senses, wouldn't a strong, caustic smell that moth balls have deter snakes if they get too close. I'm not sure if this "experiment " can refute this thought. I'm quite sure that flames will burn me, and if I linger too long in flames, I will die. Yet, if I were released from my prison cell, with a promise of freedom on the other side of flames, I'm pretty sure I would take my chances diving through those flames. Your circle seemed kind of tight, and didn't seem like the snakes had much of a choice but to get the heck out of there, "bad" smell or not. Can you make a much wider ring, where the snakes actually have a choice?

    • @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran
      @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran  5 лет назад +1

      John Bartley there is multiple videos of these kinds of tests here on RUclips. Some with large circles and some with small all the same results. I also have photos of where people put Mothballs around there house and there’s snakes inside those areas with the Mothballs. As far as scent you can’t have the same perception of how they smell because unlike us they pick up the particles more as a taste not as an actual smell. The collect the particles on there tongue and deposit them on an organ in the roof of there mouth so totally different than our sense of smell. We don’t have the same sense yet we think oh that stinks so it must keep snakes away. Just not the same.

    Hmmmm, would it help if mothballs are left for few hours to release some gas? also keep a snake, a prey and in between a line of mothballs. Then chase the snake towards the prey by a stick or so, then will the snake repel from the line or go through or it depends on how hungry the snake is. Btw, what really repells the snakes? I have heard peacock or eagle feathers, mongoose or pig urine, cat or dog hairs etc. etc. Just do not know if they work or not.

    • @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran
      @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran  6 лет назад

      Amit KP there is no known repellents for snakes. They do make a snake fencing that is effective but habitat modification is the best snake detourent ! What I mean by this is remove long grass, brush, trash, wood piles ect. from your property. If there is no habitat for a snake or it’s prey there will be no snakes except for the occasional snake crossing through to get somewhere else. Also snakes like Copperheads prey on Locust and June Bugs so keep night lighting to a minimum to detour over population of insects.

    • @amitkp6957
      @amitkp6957 6 лет назад

      @@JeremyDavisTheViperVeteranYes the habitat modification makes sense, cuts out both room and board for the snakes. Does keeping predators like eagles, pigs or mongoose work? somewhere i read that there is NO cure/vaccine for mongoose rabies. so if your mongoose passed it on to you someway then it will be a life threatening situation. even dog rabies, if given a full chance to develop inside the body is almost always fatal. it takes a while before symptoms show up and then it's quite late to defeat it.

    • @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran
      @JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran  6 лет назад

      Amit KP adding a top predator as you are suggesting would be extremely destructive to the local ecosystem and highly discouraged. Cats are often an animal people will use to control snakes on there property but they cause massive damage to the local ecosystems. Ferrel Cats are responsible for the extinction of large numbers of animals. As I stated habitat modification and snake fencing are the only two viable options to detour snakes without harming the ecosystems. As a last resort relocation of the snakes is also an option but can often be harmful to the snakes if taken to far from original home due to the strong homing instinct of some species. Some snakes will starve and die due to there strong focus on getting back to there known territory. Hope all this helps answer your questions.

    • @amitkp6957
      @amitkp6957 6 лет назад

      @@JeremyDavisTheViperVeteran If area is 5-10 acres then keeping a fence is very high cost. So having a predator can help and if that is kept outside but fed regularly then would not hurt the ecosystem as much but its presence will chase away the dangerous dudes.

      George Morrison the best and most effective way to detour snakes from your property is habitat modification. Remove trash, clutter, food, brush, ect... from your property. You have to remove the habitat that the snakes and there prey live and thrive in. Keep the property well manicured. The only thing on the market that will help reduce the snakes other than what I explained above is snake fencing. They do sell a fence you can put around your property that snakes cannot come through that is effective if done correctly. Even with all the precautions occasional snakes will be encountered if you live in areas where humans have built into animal habitat areas. Even if there are snakes on your property if you use the proper precautions and pay attention to where you walk and reach along with giving any snakes you see a wide berth you are relatively safe from being bitten. A very large percentage of bites occur when people are trying to kill a snake. The instant you try to kill a snake your risk of being bitten goes up massively. Hope these things help you in the future and always feel free to ask questions.

You can put a snake fence around your property but it will get expensive. The best thing you can do is stay alert and watch where you put your feet and hands. Always use a flashlight when stepping outside at night. The snake levels will naturally slim down on there own as the snakes begin to find new areas to live.
