Until recently, a National Health Insurance (NHI) has been little understood and much feared. But South Africans agree that medical care is expensive with private schemes beyond the reach of most, and about 85% of people depending on a crumbling public healthcare system. We sit down with Dr Nicholas Crisp, the man brought in to set up the NHI's administrative and operational capacity for the Department of Health to get a glimpse inside the real hope that the NHI could herald for the future.

Having personally experienced the state of our current hospitals, I would NEVER trust our corrupt government to deliver a private hospitals standards.

Currently finishing my 2nd year of medical internship and I have 1 more year under government to do community service. The more I read about NHI the less I want to stay and be a doctor in South Africa. Our government is not ready Financially and in terms of Leadership to have this running by 2026.

Mmala Mokone I keep reading that professionals and medical companies will ship out in SA, Can you elaborate for me on why it'll cause that if it's implemented

The current pool of tax paying citizens is not able to support the non-tax paying citizens. The more something is offered for free, the less people are prepared to work for it

Absolutely NO until government has proven to be trustworthy for at least two administrations.

The ANC can't even run a sewerage farm.

So like the NHS in the UK and that's falling apart as it's not sustainable. You wait up to 3 weeks just to see a doctor and up to 18 weeks for a specialist referral. How is that good?

No, we don't have the capacity to make this successful. Case in point Eskom and SABC. Just another idea doomed for failure.

So against NHI. Sounds great in theory but is full of opportunities for corruption and there still has not been any real accountability for those implicated in looting of state coffers . As far as I'm concerned the gravy train is only going to stop long enough for the ANC to attach a few more coaches. Let's see some criminal convictions for the Vrede Dairy crime before they try and 'help the poor' again. They stole money meant for the poor and are laughing at us with these toothless commissions and rigged inquiries . I can't afford the price of electricity and am taxed out so what now? This is just an another expensive magic trick for an already stretched out public and could very well be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Sounds great in theory, but I won't trust our government to run a bath, nevermind my life. Something as serious as running an universal healthcare system in the hand of the ANC with their historic track record. You must be completely out of touch with reality if you thing that's a good idea. I'm no prophet, but NHI in the hands of the current gov is destined for failure.

For some of us who need specialists, and based on what I have read so far, it seems to me as if this is going to be a bit problematic. We shall wait and see how it all unfolds.

Why must my right to private healthcare be destroyed. Too much corruptions and looting and mismanagement. They will just destroy private industry as well. Let all government employees go onto NHI and see them toy toy for services!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7:58 says the board of NHI will be interviewed by an independent panel. Sounds good. We'll see.

Thanks for uploading this recording. The opinions shared on NHI are often bias. The Free Market Foundation believes the NHI will be a gateway for corruption. An advantage of NHI is improved social cohesion. A disadvantage of NHI is that the lack of transparent and strategic purchasing will not strengthen the system. We need a critical approach to National Health Insurance. We developed a video that summarises some of the key issues to consider. It’s viewable here ruclips.net/video/e8anLwo7gfA/видео.html
Thanks again for sharing your clip.

Little bit of a short sighted episode Carte Blanche...very disappointed. The NHI does not spell out any good outcome for our already failing economy by yours truly, the ANC Government. They cant even keep the lights on but now we need to trust them with our health? Not a very convincing pitch...

the system must continue the current policy is saying no to life if you're poor, so NHI is our solution
