- This is the same for the 1.8L engine from 2006-2009.
I will go over the steps of how i fixed my cracked engine block. I ended up putting more JB weld than what i showed.
I strongly suggest you make sure your vehicle is under warranty first. This is for TSB 10-048. I will say this many times, i do not recommend this method and i am not responsible if you try it yourself. This is just a way of showing you guys what i did. It has worked for 2 weeks now from the time of the upload.
Flush out distilled water immediately if you tried it and add Honda Type 2 coolant.

It works !!!! most importnat thing is to take out the coolant completley so when you apply jbweld on the engine block, the coolant doens come out. I took out inlet pipe line to take out coolant completley.

Tips:
2:40 when taking out the oxygen sensor. There's two parts. You unplug the one to the right first. Then the one with the sensor is clipped to the bracket. The release switch is facing you hidden behind the plastic. Push down the switch and slide the plastic from the bracket.
2:52 just loosen that bolt you don't need to remove it.
Laketown body repair i have a 08 civic i have a question when my car is running it burns oil and therez a oily substance from the exaust i checked the oil cap there's no milky oil and i took out the oil dipstick theres no steam what are the symptoms of a cracked head or cracked engine
ive actually used rtv to seal mine up 2006 lx automatic
..just have to clean it good and apply a decent amount of rtv and let it cure for 3 days

I have a crack on my 8th gen block. Was going to try this drain coolant clean area where the crack is located. Spray some high temp paint . Few coats. Then jb weld.anothet layer of high temp paint.
Did you end up doing that? Did it work?
Just been wondering why did you have to apply high temp paint? While there is JB weld 2 parts mixture could hold up to 550 degree F. I guess engine temp wouldn't go up that high.
Prior to covering with JB Weld I recommend using Loctite 290 and primer T or primer N. Coat the crack with primer, let it soak in and dry for 5 to 10 minutes. This cleans the crack. Apply the Loctite, leave it for 30 minutes to an hour to allow it to cure. Remember Loctite cures in the lack of oxygen. Then go ahead and apply the JB Weld. Loctite 290 (green) is meant to seal cracks as well as thread locking of assembled nuts and bolts.

I live in Canada and its hard to find Loctite 290 in stores or on Amazon, the only Loctite product available in stores is Loctite Blue 242. I have found an equivariant product which is Permatex Green Thread locker. However for the Primer T or Primer N I can't for the life of me find this in stores or online, and unfortunately I cant find a suitable replacement either. Are there any other products I can use that is the same as Primer T or Primer N. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Is the loctite and primer good for a cast iron block crack as well? Or only aluminum?
When you mention primer t, are you referring to Mapei Primer T waterproofing membrane?

Woah this works! I just did this on my 2008 civic a couple days back. Same process but I had to remove the alternator as well to really get into the crack area. Be warned! This isn't a permanent fix, it can last 2 months, or 2 years! No way to tell unfortunately.

@@matthewkretz4257 So far so good! It's holding up quite well here up in Canada with the cold. I'll probably add on a another layer of JB Weld in the spring time.

have a 2006 civic. backs in august 2018, and after only 43K miles on my car, the engine cracked. Honda did extend the warranty for 10 years from production date so my warranty expired in august 2016. since i was 2 years outside of the warranty, honda would not replace my engine for free. they wanted me to pay $4000 and they would pay "the rest" - stating it would be 7K plus. turned out it was $5500 so I still had to pay $4000 and Honda got off paying only $1500. Since getting my car back, the transmission is not shifting smoothly and the engine light came on. Honda wanted $190 to run diagnostics. I said eff that!! Honda makes me sick!! they knew about these faulty engines - they should pay regardless of years.
I know its been a year since you posted your comment. I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I was out of warranty for 2 months. Honda Corporate did not offer me any assistance. I said to Honda had my engine NOT cracked and was still under warranty would you switch out my engine before the warranty expired? They said, "why would we switch out an engine that is not cracked?" I tried negotiating with Honda for 3 months still got NOTHING. After that I said F you Honda. I belong to a large union and will tell everyone NEVER to buy another Honda ever again. Since then, I've purchased 3 Toyota vehicles and sent pictures of them to Honda corporate.

Did you drain it after you did the pressure test so you could see it where its leaking? My 2008 honda has 48000 and this just happened...trying to just get rid of it...

I've never used that product in particular. But here is my issues with these type of products
1. A crack on the block is a bit bigger and products like these usually dont work or dont do a good job sealing.
2. They clog everything like your heater core, radiator and so on. Coolant passages that are clogged could cause overheating issues.
But like I said I've never used this product itself. I've used others like this and it was a nightmare. If you do end up using it, let me know how it turns out ,I'm curious.
Blue devil works great for me its pricey but you will see good ling results have same issue also going to.j

how to take out coolant from engine block? when I appied jb weld on the engine block, the coolant kept on coming out. so frustrated
Jin Kim drain coolant from radiator plug or disconnect the lower coolant hose. That should drain out most of it so you can put the jb weld on
theres a drain bolt on the block on the front driver side by the knock sensor
hi my engine broke near the water pump and the local Honda did not want to change my engine because it was out of warranty... do you know if this type of welding will work on that section of the engine??
I cant tell you for sure if it will. Never tried it.
are you saying the tensioner bolt broke....its possible to extract it, you have to torque the new bolt to exactly 40 ft/lb's and use blue loctite
worst case scenario is you need to have a Time Sert installed
I wud suggest k seal i did it to mine its been a year it leaks but alot less

Well it held up for 3 years but now the car is long gone. My sister owned it but sold it dirt cheap
Could've tig welded and filled up all of the casting around the cracks with weld?

Hi. On the cracked block 2006-2009. I"m told that 2010,2011 don't have the cracking issues. I was curious if any other years can be substituted, because 2012 and 2013 1.8L civic engines seem to be cheaper than 2010 and 2011.

@@laketownautorepair336 Thanks for responding. From what I have seen in these threads is the thousands and thousands who have suffered this issue have not properly issued complaints. The issue is more common than alluded to.
What i'm saying is if everyone in the few dozen youtube sites related to this put in the properly issued complaint, it's possible something may be done.
If JB weld ever stops holding, there are people who can weld Aluminum. If you found the exact spot where it was leaking you could probably just touch it up and be done with it.
To do that would be have to remove the whole block?

Still holding? I went ahead and this a couple months ago. Same car same year. Found the crack behind the starter. Put 3 layers but I'm constantly looking at the temp and I hate that i do that.

Laketown auto repair how would i know if i have a cracked engine block i have a 08 civic and it burns oil and there is a oily subtence from the exaust
i cant tell you for sure but if the car is burning oil its most likely the piston rings. but to have and oily substance is excessive.

If u have a welder I recommend this option as well
Use a center punch at the end of the crack about a finger length away from the crack
You do this for incase it cracks more while in repair and so it won’t spread. Once that’s done use a carbide Dremel bit and remove enough material to weld onto but the crack can potentially come back sometimes in the same area it’s really a hit or miss whichever u do go with sometimes no other issues come up sometimes same issue reoccurs
But with the welder u can weld and sand down the welding marks and would never know anything was done

I really cant tell you if you should get a new engine. i think to know for sure is to do a leak down test on the engine to see whats going on. Mazda 3s in my experience are good cars and they are easy to work on. Again thats from my experience.

Nathaniel Garcia it’s made out of aluminum and welding it would be costly if you don’t have a welder, and one with aluminum wire or sticks.
Plus, it’s just temporary and likely to crack again.

Just fill the entire casting area with weld.

I did it the same day. But maybe take off the lower radiator hose. Or even lift the back end of the vehicle as you drain it.

Is it still holding up, mine gave up, honda said they won't fix it and I thought of this bit want to look it up first, I have a friend who ran the car 40k miles after using in weld but it may not be the same for everyone.
It is still holding up. Not sure for how long but its been over a month now and i have no signs of leakage. If you do decide to do it i just recommend you dry 1 layer and put another on top of that a day after.
Laketown Auto Repair mine was leaking from there too like all others, I picked the car up from honda and it's now leaking from under the radiator and not the original crack, so ima just swap the motor to be honest amd sell it
Thats the best thing to do, these arent even worth keeping considering there are 4 other places they can break. Good Luck
How’s it holding up? Do you drive that car daily now? Do you know what causes this besides manufacturing defect, like did it run too hot then it cracked? I’m thinking of buying one of these as a beater that may have an engine block crack and just fix it like that
Luke Zachary it's holding up still. I think because I put a lot of jb it's still holding. I really don't know how much longer till it gives out or if it ever will. I been driving it to work and back but I don't care take it too far. I can't tell you to do the same but from my experience it's holding pretty well. If you do decide to do this, take your time and prep it good
Hey is the car still working??I just found out my 2006 Honda has the same issue and I took it to the shop yesterday it's easily around $1,000 where I live and I'm not really trying to spend that kind of money.
Still way cheaper than what Honda Long Beach wanted from me. $3700 for labor and $6600 for the block alone new, or used low mileage engine for $5900 🙃 that’s almost as much as I paid for my 09 when I bought it in 2013

In canada there is a warranty extension for this issue, and if you contact honda they usually work something out even if out of warranty.

Joshua dagaur Honda told me last night that the car has a bad head gasket and not a crack engine block so it’s not covered under warranty and the car was not serviced at a Honda stealership and I brought the car used at 88,000 miles and the car has 121,000 miles on the car so I wasn’t the original owner so this a 2008 Honda Civic from the original owner it was August 15, 2008 so I’m out of warranty so they not covering anything the dealer told me 8,000 of damages
@@honestscentz9300 dude just email honda, tell them your a student and you were a week out of warranty. The dealership is a lot different then contracted the billion dollar Corp. They will help, but send the email and be patient.

@@luigimartinez7127 Have you done it yet? I can see the webbed area on the block, I'd grind visible crack down as you said, but also completely fill in the webbed area with fresh aluminum weld. There is no earthly reason why it should leak after this.

I just bought my 2007 Civic from a Mercedes dealership in June, now I’m wondering if this is what they did. A month after purchase it started leaking coolant, I’m 2 years outta warranty and I’m pissed! $3,999 +TT&L down the drain. 🤬🤬🤬

JOHN LOPER I just bought a used 2008 Honda Civic with 113,400 miles and the previous owners did the same thing with the jb weld because it had a cracked block, they didn’t tell me that it happened and I had to find out myself by inspecting my vehicle thoroughly. my question to you is how much did it cost you to get a new motor for your civic including parts and labor and what would you suggest I do?

I have done it twice now on my car. First time lasted 6 months, second time, lasted 2 months. Cleaning the area is important

My engine block cracked and we called the Honda dealer ship about the extended warranty and they refuse. We kept calling and complaining and they finally gave in and did the repair for us.
mine is a 2006 and the engine block is cracked they said they would check it out... you think they'll do it, even though the warranty is past 10 years? It only has 96000 miles.
How did you get them too. Mine just cracked and is also a 2006. The warranty expired 2 years ago and that's when I bought it from the dealership.

Go to the dealership and mention technical service bulletin 10-048. I got mines replaced a few years ago. It does have a 10 year extension

from the picture you are suffering from porosity in the alum of the block, it's from a bad casting, this is a manufacturing defect, as such it should be covered by the dealer, even if out of warranty..

Nope it’s not unfortunately me and thousands of others I’ve seen online tried calling everyone from Honda to no avail. They only extended the warranty they did not do a recall so once your past the 10 year warranty no dice. Called everyone warranty dealerships I mean everyone

How often you change your coolant? Ppl who have 8th gen Civics and change their coolant every 30k with Honda Type 2 don't have this problem. The engine block on this car is all aluminum. Fresh coolant at all times is a must!!!
This is a manufacturing defect. The engine blocks were made too pourus. The crack happens at the same place in all cases. This has nothing to do with the type of coolant, it is Honda being cheap assholes with poor QA.
Victor Troska Incorrect. Coolant lubricates your engine block, just like your engine oil lubricates your engine. I can tell you don't take care of your car. Your brake fluid is pitch black same as your power steering fluid. Your air box has about 2 years of gunk around it. Hate to even see your cabin filter as well. Take you haven't changed your air filter in years. Oil filter is covered under an inch of garbage. When's the last time you changed your oil? Dude you do minimum maintenance on your car. I take you try to drag everything in your car until it can go no more for all your maintenance . That whole it ain't broke why fix it mindset is really paying dividends on your car's reliability. 😶
@@danielb3863 I run Dexos Full synthetic oil, and synthetic ATF in my 2007 civic. Coolant was changed with OEM Honda coolant every 50k. The block still cracked. This has nothing to do with fluids, and is the result of a casting defect from the factory.
This is the most retarded comment I've ever seen. You don't need to lubricate the engine block cus there's nothing moving lmao. That's why water works as antifreeze but it's not recommended. Oil lubricates the engines moving parts and even though it's not a good practice, not ever changing coolant will have absolutely no effect on the structural integrity of the block
I will also second this nothing and I repeat nothing you do can prevent this from happening if it fails. There’s two weak points in the block in the webbing. Although I’m sure you won’t believe me anyway.

tip for that oxygen sensor is to get a big Flathead screwdriver and a hammer and tap the nut at an angle to spin it off.

I am pretty sure I just bought this car last week. This exact same car with that bullshit 17R bullshit rim on it.
This was a recall. It happened to me and they replaced it free of charge. Also it depends on year.
This was never a recall....or I would not be in the situation I am in. It was only a notification about the extended warranty. I was on the freeway in Ca, and nearly was killed due to this failure. Now we are in a fight with Honda to do the right thing. Bottom line, they new this was a defective engine and should have recalled it and they did not. Yours was repaired because it was within the warranty limits.

Chris K if you don’t care let me know what Honda says or does, I had to take out a personal loan & replace the engine (wishing I would’ve JB welded it) & sold it. It makes me sick the $ there making, but yet will not stand behind there own default

A cracked block is a cracked block and needs to be replaced there is no other options unless you like spending money and not fixing the problem and have the time to deal with the pos honda afterall we have free will
We need to protest at Honda shops right outside they need to do something not just we cant help you its f up ppl have to be patching up there engine. Just seen my civic leaking and i know it's that sheee
