It comes with a tons of programs too and most of them fit on a 1.44 MB floppy! The only proprietary bits are game data binary blobs like doom and quake WAD files. The OS is a fork on Menuet32 which was released under GPL2-only. Menuet64, a 64-bit variant of the original, was released under a proprietary license which is free for personal and educational use with the exception that reverse engineering isn’t allowed without a specific request from the copyright holders.

Got a hp probook for experimenting with operating systems on a laptop. I tried ubuntu, windows, cutefish ubuntu and now macOS. Once i got everything working on macOS it started to become my daily driver. I like the easy to use User Interface and i love the quality of life features. MacOS is my way to go

RISC OS. It runs on my RiscStation 7500+ from 20+ years ago, on my PI 4/400 and on RPCEmu in essentially the same way. In fact, I can run the same software on all of these platforms using the latest iteration of the OS because it so efficient having been written on ARM Assembler from the ground up (sadly, also it's downfall because it can't be ported to other hardware)

it depends on the availability of apps /or applications. The benefits for myself doesn't come from the OS anymore.
And yes I'm an old man, started in the 80ies with DEC PDP11/ RSX later VAX/VMS, CPM/86, DOS, OS/2 Windows NT, different UNIX.

As long as you have the right hardware, QubesOS is the best OS. Similar to EXSi, it is a type 1 hypervisor OS. But, it's far more friendly as a GUI and built around user security. If you pass through a GPU to a Windows VM, you can game on it too. Anything you can install on an x86 can be embedded as an OS and in many cases you can run lower level VMs that run single apps as their own windows. Native x86 Mac, Linux and Windows applications all side by side on the same desktop, with whatever network routing you like. Integrated whonix gateway and firewall.
It really is the best there is, it just requires a lot of cores and RAM.

I guess it really comes down to your personal preference if it’s for your own use .
For work it depends on the nature or the work and the environment. I’d say most businesses use windows, Mac is prominently used in educational settings, Linux more common in IT admin/ server related roles .
Also for mobile devices in business seems like it’s shifting towards iOS

i really like windows for compatibility and support. but you really need to debloat it. often windows feels cracky and slow, non fluid. but once you debloat it, mod the ui, and mod the OS, it feels smooth, in my opinion more so than my experience from linux (im not talking about ram usage or loading speeds, just how bugless, simple etc the experience is), and has good compatibility.
