I don’t get why being in jail isn’t a valid excuse for not showing up in court. Of all the possible reasons, it seems like a very solid one, up there with being hospitalized.
Being in jail, again, means you are just stupid. Hospital is a whole different level that most people don’t cause for themselves

Because when in jail, it is still your responsibility to ensure that the courts are aware of your situation so that either transportation can be arranged or a zoom call or a reschedule.
Even jail isn't a good enough excuse. Jail will make sure you show up to court if they are told (and then they check the systems) and see an appearance is mandatory.

Imagine someone who steals something from a store, trespasses, gets in a fight, has a dui. Should that person be in prison for life?
Well a fight or dui can cause death and severe injury. I've been stupid enough many years back to drive under the influence causing car to be totaled and arm and wrist surgeries. I got fortunate that i was not the one in the er not to kill someone like another dui driver was responsible for that same day I was recovering in the hospital same hospital. Not saying people should go for life for these crimes but there should be more seriousness with these crimes and better sentences for child abusers.
First, they are all misdemeanors, so it would be jail, not prison. Second, he has done jail time. And it looks like a significant bit. And third, while technically criminal, they appeared to all still be traffic offenses. Do you really think locking him up for a year (maximum for misdemeanors) is a wise use of limited jail space and resources?

Are these zoom calls actually more efficient than attending live court? I’ve seen some where the judge spends more time telling people instructions of naming conventions, sharing screens, how to unmute, not to drive while on zoom, audio issues. It’s rediculous also the amount of idiots that know in advanced their zoom date, yet can’t find a room in a house for privacy and decide to have children present, people walking in background or outside with wind in the mic etc. I fail to see how doing things this way improves efficiency.
