  • Our practice should never turn into an unmotivating and unenjoyable experience. Unfortunately, many of us unwittingly end up in this position because we prioritize the wrong things in our practice.
Instead of focusing on making small and consistent improvements over time and with relaxation, we unconsciously work toward immediate “fixes“ and expect them to stick after one go. Or, we’re simply in a hurry to improve and, as a result, over-practice or don’t practice strategically. At some point, we forget about enjoying the music we are
making and start beating ourselves up for not progressing as quickly as desired.
The result is frustration and a lack of motivation. Eventually, the idea of practicing starts becoming less exciting and if we don’t correct our bad practice habits, we can quickly start feeling defeated and unmotivated.
I certainly found myself in this position at some point in my guitar journey and it was difficult to get out of it!
The good news is that we can combat this with some strategic changes in our mindset and
    practice approach!
Here are some ideas that can help you keep your practice intrinsically rewarding:
    • Always remind yourself that you want to play and practice guitar for enjoyment and expression (even if your practice session is very challenging).
    • Finish a few practice sessions with something fun and relatively easy. That could be something completely unrelated, easy, and fun like playing chords to one of your favorite
tunes. When you do this, focus on enjoying the sound of your guitar.
    • Remind yourself that every time you make improvements to a challenge, you’re getting better. Make sure to genuinely celebrate those improvements. Smile when you make an improvement or overcome multiple
    challenge spots in a row.
    • Go easy on yourself when you make a mistake. Remember to treat mistakes like SIOs (significant improvement opportunities).
    • Work on being process-focused rather than result-focused. Make the path equally or more rewarding than the final destination. This is particularly difficult when you’re having a challenging practice session. in those instances, remind yourself to enjoy the sound of the guitar and remind yourself that the work you were doing is helping you improve.
    • If something isn’t going well, rather than digging in your heels, take a break and come back to it when your mind is cam and refreshed.
    • Get into your music! Really immerse yourself in the sound of your music. The more expressive you can be while playing, and the more you can enjoy your sound, the more enjoyable and motivating your practice will be (even when practice is difficult)!
