  • This one was my biggest mistake as a professional musician early on. I discovered, on stage during my first performance, that I wasn’t prepared for performance even though I could play my pieces very well at home during practice! I incorrectly assumed that because I could play well at home, I would have no problem performing publicly.
I didn’t take into account how I would be affected by everything involving the actual performance: stage lights, how my guitar sounded through a monitor, the odd-sized chair, and most importantly, the nerves experienced by playing in front of an unfamiliar audience! I learned the hard way that it’s just as important to practice performance as it is to practice technique and musicality….and to do so EARLY ON!
So how do we practice performance?
Well, like practicing music on the guitar, it's multifaceted, but the main goals are to practice playing your music without stopping, to play expressively, enjoy the experience, and finally, learn how to dial in just the right amount of adrenaline so that you can be optimally energized
yet tension-free on stage. Too much adrenaline can lead to shaky hands, tension, cold sweats, and fear. And too little can result in a flat and expressionless performance.
Here are some ideas as to how you can practice performance:
    • Assuming you have memorized a musical phrase or a full piece, start your practice session by first warming up and then immediately playing your music from top to bottom without
stopping for any reason. Get used to playing right through mistakes.
    • When you do make a mistake, keep going and refocus on your musical goals.
    • Record your performance practice! This adds just a tiny bit of adrenaline to our system which can improve performance if we learn to dial in the right amount.
    • Start practicing performance as soon as you start learning your piece. That could easily be 3 to 6 months before your performance date. You have to think of your performance like a final exam in college or like preparing for a marathon. It's the consistent and cumulative work
over time that will get you the best results.
    • When you practice performance, treat it like a real performance. Set up your chair, exit the room, and think about your performance goals. Vividly imagine the sound of your first few
notes the way you want them to sound. Then enter the room, bow, sit, and play.

I find after playing 99 %of time on my own that I when I try to play for people I can see them in my peripheral vision , it just totally distracts me and puts me off , not to mention my hands just tense up making shifts next to impossible, performing is just brutal hard !!
    Good tip here though!
I often ask performers how do they get a piece from good in the the practice room to good on the stage ! It’s gigantic leap

Hi Alan! Thank you so much for commenting! Yes, preparing a piece for performance and then actually performing is pretty challenging. Guitarist, who have started at a very young age tend to have an advantage in this realm since they grew up doing this and it’s second nature to them. Learning how to perform as an adult requires a whole bunch of extra skilled development on the psychological side. One thing that helps me a lot is to close my eyes or to look up toward the back of the room where the ceiling meets the wall. Another thing that helps me tremendously is to really focus on my musical expression. Getting into the music as much as possible helps me not get distracted by the audience. And any event, it’s just another skill to develop which takes time! I hope this helps!
