My massage therapist recommended practicing “mindful walking”, by hanging vertically in the deep end of the pool, using a life jacket to provide the lift. I then walk suspended in the water, as if I was on dry land. The pain relief is instant for me, and it changes the way my core muscles activate. Rest, exercise and refreshment in one activity!

I teach deep water running. And we use deep water flotation belts. They do up tightly around the lower ribs. Much more comfortable than a life jacket

This video gave me so much relief. Stretching, hot baths, and OTC pain relievers offering little to no help. I've been out of commission for more than a week. When I tried the two-chair method I felt relief after just a few reps. And having repeated the exercise a few more times in the past couple of hours I can say the pain is nearly gone. I can see why you guys are the most "Famous Physical Therapists on the internet." You give great advice. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I love your guys' videos! Especially on spinal injuries and back pain. You guys covered a lot, but I thought I'd share a couple of exercises that have helped me, in hopes of helping others :)
    Background information:
I'm a gymnastics coach and aerialist and also did gymnastics as a child. I have had problems with pain in my lower and mid back/spine after two separate incidents--one in which I did a simple gymnastics skill with poor form (as an adult, without having stretched beforehand), and one in which I tried a new skill from a trampoline into a foam pit and landed in what some people call a "scorpion" position (facing forward, legs above head, with an arched back).
    My favorite spinal decompression/traction exercises:
*I am not a physical therapist, but I just wanted to share a couple of exercises that helped relieve my long term thoracic and lumbar pain :)
    1) (Requires a bar) At least twice a week, I would hang from the uneven bars for 1-10 minutes, but usually about 5 minutes. I do aerial silks and trapeze, so I am used to being upside down and find it very relaxing! I hang from the bar with my lower hips/upper thighs touching the bar, in a bent forward position. I found this so helpful and relaxing for my (sharp) back pain, that I decided to add weight. I started with a light kettlebell, then progressively made my way up to 45 lbs, which was tiring to hold onto, but very effective (for me, personally). I also would hang in a variation of the position I previously mentioned--it's the same position, just with bent / Indian style / criss-cross position. When you finish, it is very important to come out of the position slowly (by rolling forward, or lifting your head and shoulders up to a "front support" position on the bar before coming down. This should only be done on a short bar. I always did it on a bar shorter than me, and with a large block mat underneath so I can dismount slowly and with ease.
    2) (Requires a lacrosse or tennis ball) This one is specifically for lower/lumbar pain. You lie down on your back with your knees bent (like you're getting ready to do sit-ups), then lift your hips up and place the ball underneath your sacrum. Assuming it feels good, you can lie there as long as you want. But, when you're done, remove the ball by lifting your hips slowly, and lie down a bit longer without the ball before you decide to get up.
I wish everyone luck in relieving their back pain!

I remember the first time I did it on accident and literally my whole lumbar spine cracked and it took my breath away the stretch felt so good. Along with the spine decompressing, it can do wonders for tense muscles in your lower back too.

I used to do this as a natural reaction to my back pain after long sittings. I didn’t even know that it was an actual thing. All I used to do was to put my hands on the both handles of chair and push them, such that it lifts me up and keep my back relax. Most of the time it used to give me that “pop” sound and the orgasm that cracking your back gives. I used to feel a “little” taller after doing this.

Why don't physical therapists use traction machines? I've dealt with sciatica issues for years but the one thing that gave me tremendous relief was a traction machine at the physical therapist office. This was years ago and it is no longer available. I laid on my back on a table, legs up on a box with a type of harness around my hips which was attached to a machine on the floor that gently pulled on my hips which stretched my spine. Why is this no longer used?

Wonder what Bob and Brad would say about the position of the legs while hanging. Some physical therapist who i I also follow such as Kelly starrett say that it is important to keep the legs and toes slightly in front of your hips when you do pull-ups or hangs. Putting your legs behind you while hanging puts your lower back into a hyperextended unnatural position in which exposes your lower back to injury. I've tried it in some of my pull up routines and it seems to be helpful. Another thing they recommend is noting the thumb position while hanging ensuring that the thumb is wrapped over your index finger has this promotes the correct seating of the shoulder and it's ball and socket joint. Now that is something I truly have experience with and it does work.

I’m a big fan of hanging from a pull-up bar but unlike what Brad did of grabbing on the bar - I bought a pair of slings to do leg raises with and hung them from the bar
The trick to using the slings is to get them well into your arm pits and keeping your upper arm parallel to the floor bend your arm and grab the sling above your shoulder with your hand - forming a triangle. - like this and you can hang a long time without losing a grip ! Plus it locks your shoulders in stabilizing your upper body
What I like to do to loosen up is in this position swing my legs side to side together. Next let 1 leg hang down while you twist raising your right leg toward your left hand & do the same reverse it to the other side Than as you’ve stretched out and loosen your muscles just hang straight up/down 30-40 seconds totally relaxed. *** Don’t hang longer than this as it will over stretch and straighten the “S” curve in the lower spine which can create problems and will be painful.
Than immediately lay on the floor with your knees bent and relax for 5+ minutes. This will decompress your spine big time !!
I figure out this technique back in the mid 1990s when I hurt my back doing heavy squats (300). Chiropractor scheduled me for 10 visits @ strapped down on a table as traction pulled your hips down After the 7th time (and a lot less pain) I realized I could use the abdominal slings on my pull up bar and do the same thing for free. That lesson cost me $800
I do this 2-3 times a week or whenever I feel tight. It generally eliminates back kinks well, however if you’re really in pain go see a professional to make sure you didn’t really do some damage

Should I keep doing these if they are very painfull to do. They cause alot of pain and my sciatic nerve hurts the whole way down to my ankle when doing them?

I've been doing this for years, but only temporarily relieves one symptom. To cure you have to correct your daily posture. Now I don't need to do anymore and the pain is gone.

Do these decompression exercises that you have demonstrated work on the cervical spine. I have constant popping and cracking in my upper cervical spine.

Look into ELDOA, it’s real spinal decompression that lasts! Not a passive decompression but rather a very active decompression while strengthening the muscles and stretching the fascia or connective tissue around the particular articulation you’re trying to decompress

Although it feels good, spinal decompression also kinda feels "weird" (a bit achy) when I'm starting. Is that because your system is adjusting to it?
